He's great. But I'll stick with Lopez. I do love his style and grooveness (if you can say it that way). Lopez is doing an excellent job in his new band, Soen.
he is a great drummer really good at a lot of aspects, but he will always lack the latin backgrounds Lopez had, and me as a metal drummer, know that a metal drummer can get to be a hell of a good drummer... but if it has a latin percussion training, it can get to be a genius of the drums like Mr Lopez
@mafr0o i´ve just seen he does handle the basics of latin and is an average jazz player too... mediocre latin drumming??? you must be kidding or know nothing
continue.... I mean, I can understand him, but musically it's not acceptable, great drummers probably would say that he is a good player but he needs to control himself from time to time, like Lopez did. I still don't mind but I would really like to see Damnation pt.2 type of album with really smooth playing. Love the way he uses the rute brushes in Heritage btw :D
@Battossai3000 I wouldn't say that necessarily, while Lopez is quite possibly the master of groove and restraint if you listen to Axe on Hessian Peel, Nepenthe and Haxprocess you can hear a great amount of restraint and smooth playing.
Martin Lopez is great though. But I still don't think he can't compete with Axe. Most of Lopez's songs are played fairly the same. The good side of Lopez's playing is that he is more dinamic, he can control the power not like Axe which wants to put as much drumming as possible to all the songs.
Look, we all love Lopez. He's a one in a million - power and groove effortlessly combined. We were all shattered when he left. But the first time I heard The Lotus Eater, the drumming blew my mind - and it still does, and I knew it would be ok. And now Legolas is kicking absolute ass on Heritage. Drummers take time to grow into a band.
@dragon2712 Good to know he is into a band that sounds like Tool, but I agree with you man, I think Lopez just fit into Opeth style, but as he said in the ghost reveries dvd clip he was a fan of the band back then, and we now are fans of Lopez. Axenrot technique from my point of view is power and blast beats, but this guy 'Axe' has become more technical with the time he has spend with Opeth. sorry about my english, cheers from Iceland. :]
I actually think I like Axe more than Lopez now. They are both amazing and Lopez does have an amazing groove and style (he's really been one of the most influential drummers on my own style) but after getting into Watershed (I admit that I waited awhile to purchase it) and then Heritage it seems that Axe is just more capable all around. The fact that Axe is more cooperative with the band helps too. Just my two cents.
@purplewalnut89 Not really, from Axe's work in bloodbath you can see that he's far more technical than Lopez, he is also that guy you throw anything at him and he will be able to do it no problem at all.
He's come into his own with Opeth, but he REALLY struggled in the beginning. Guy couldn't groove to save his life when he first joined the band...I remember hearing him play Bleak or Windowpane when he first joined the band was one of the most awkward things I'd ever heard.
@DetNosnip True, he struggle a lot at first I remember seeing "Master's Apprentice" performance I think it was in 2008 ... he couldn't keep on the double bass for the whole thing he had to pause a couple of times also his performance on their soft songs weren't that great, he's much much better now.
@CROSSFIRE011 Ill agree he is great, but he just adds too much to the songs ya know? Being a great drummer you have to know when to hold back, that is what sets people apart from average musicians. Perfect example is Porclein (sp) Heart. The first 3 minutes of the song is just overplayed. Nonetheless hes a great drummer.
@purplewalnut89 Lopez is more talented than Axe ... maybe because of his different influences ... Axe did a great job filling his place & he's more technical too. I miss Lopez but I don't mind Axe, both are good.

This guy doesn't belong to Opeth. Opeth must consider Bobby Jarzombek instead.
