Billie had the distinct tone & the awesome ability to sing just behind or above the music and still come out on time which is hard to do if you're not a true singer. Her voice became weak in the end because of the drugs, but even then she still she knew how to sell a song and put it across. She was one of the greats if not the greatest PERIOD.
This just somehow makes it more painful - no one will ever be able to go and ask her: "Amy, can you please sing it again so that we could record it properly".
For all the credit being given to Donny and Amy for how well they perform this song, the true credit goes to an American band fronted by Al Kooper (1968) called Blood, Sweat & Tears. Give it a listen before judging how well others can cover it.

Donny Hathaway did this song great justice. I like Amy's version as well, its not bad but I guess white soulful singers never sound as soulful as black singers. In life Amy did remind me of Janis Joplin but I guess I prefer Janis' sound... All round, she's not bad at all.

I keep coming back to this song. I think its becoming my favorite. Amy sings this song so gloriously it gives me chills. It's a shame and I would be surprised if whoever filmed this was the only one at the time just the rest,if any, aren't online.

@Legend1One It was written and originally recorded by Al Kooper, actually. He was vocalist w/ Blood Sweat and Tears on their very first album ... before the group started sucking. ;-) This song was on that album, with Al Kooper doing lead vocal.
