@SuriNin3 Hashem wants us to follow His Torah, which means that women are not allowed to wear a tallit or get an aliyah either. Why this is against halacha is unknown because it is Hashem's laws. But every jew has to follow Halacha whether they understand the law or not
the diffrence between Hafman and Parks is Parks was simply refuseing to move. she fought an unjust law that treated African americans like they are not even human. The reason men and women are sperated during prayer is to help with concentration.
Since religions dictate different behaviors by gender, there's bound to be conflict. The question is how to address legitimate concerns while staying true to the belief system.
As Jews, we value human rights. We are a fair people & a thinking people. We must be progressive, otherwise we will be no better than extremists in Pakistan who cut off women's noses or throw acid in their faces for wanting an education. If you want women to behave, move to Saudi Arabia, otherwise be enlightened.
The Western Wall was made a fault line where Jewish Feminist Egalitarianism collides with a growing, politicized Chareidi movement. It's not likely the Wall Women will accept contemporary halakha being read to them nor will the Chareidi public react to them through any other behavior beside hysterics and violence- hence the impasse. The halakhic community would have served its public image and interests better had they ignored the activists, prayer shawled or not.
did she walk into the mens section wearing the shall?? I see the point she was
making but...jeeez lady could you be anymore dramatic??
shock value...attention mongering. it's very childish what she did. i wouldn't imprison her...she should be banned from the wall for a few decades. (is that too harsh?)
Only faintly absurd...Who's business is it if this woman prays from a genuine place in her soul and chooses to (correctly) wear a tallit in so doing? If people would stop speaking for G-d and stop taking it upon themselves to tell other people what they should do and how they should do it, we wouldn't be in this mess.
This is not undermining traditional Judaism. There was no separation at the Kotel between sexes in the 20's and 30's, nor was there separation in any synagogue until the 16th century. The Talmud states that women may chant Torah (although it is not recommended when men are around). There has never been only one way to be Jewish, and those who claim that Orthodox Judaism is the same as traditional Judaism are mistaken or worse. What chutzpah to think you know what HaShem wants!
@nombei7 If the Talmud is mentioned, why stop at gender separation? I seem to recall that the tenet forbidding females to read from the Torah is post-Talmudic and politically motivated (some females were putting their male counterparts to shame in reading prowess, so the decree was designed to eliminate female competition).
The other decree forbidding females to raise their voices in prayer and song within the synagogues is certainly not found in the Mishnah or earlier.
@ZviJ1 Despite my certitude that our God didn't command to don Tefillin (as proven by Rashbam), most Jews hold to the mistaken opinion that females in "traditional Judaism" are prohibited from donning it, but this is very far from the truth. Rashi's daughters, to name 1 example, used to don them and no Rabbinic authority of note considered it at the time (circa 1100) forbidden!
Likewise, those maintaining women were always forbidden to wear a Tallit in "traditional Judaism" are in error too.
thats not true at all. there was no mechitza at the kosel in te 20s and 30s because the ottomans banned any chairs and walls there, and the brittish continued that to appease arabs.
its also a lie that no shuls had seperations before the 1500s. the beis hamikdahs its self had seperations, and the talmud is strict about seperations.
her fear of the kosel being an "ultra orthodox" shul, I want to ask her when it ever was NOT anythin but orthodox??? orthodox is the only judaism.
This is the very same thing a fundamentalist Muslim says about his religious orthodoxy. Every religious orthodoxy has brought only suffering to this world and i applaud and support EVERY form of liberal religions. Words of an ex-orthodox Jew.
MY NEIGHBOR IS IN CHARGE OF THOSE ACTIVITIES AT THE KOTEL - AND HE IS QUITE THE LAID BACK TYPE - BUT HE IS TOTALLY AGAINST WHAT THESE FEMINISTS DID THAT DAY... NOT ONLY THAT HE SAYS THEY'VE BEEN IN COURT OVER THIS MATTER FOR AT LEAST A YEAR. P.S. IT'S NOT OK TO TRY AND UNDERMINE TRADITIONAL JUDAISM - NO MATTER WHO OR 'WHAT' YOU ARE... -SHALOM
It saddens me that a photo of rosa parks is all she has to remember her civil rights we as African americans who are probabally really descendants of jews are looked upon as scum while certain jews wait for their lost brothers scattered among the nations to come back to rebuild the city if we cant get around the women praising the same god that made us what is there to say about accepting jews of other colors we will be coming home

@AaronHai1 Women are permitted to wear tzitzit, deal with it! Our Rabbis taught:
All must observe the law of Tzizith, priests, Levites,
and Israelites, proselytes,
women and slaves."
