did you ever get the "Kinit: no resume image found" error during boot up? I have the same card, but cant get desktop effects to work- either through killing gnome and a root install, or propietary drivers, or even envy.. they all get me the "Kinit error"// now im using 8.10 vs 8.04... already looked over forums, filed abug report- but perhaps you have an idea?
i actually did everything according to the manual wuth Envy. But i found ouw what was wrong when i installed the propietary. I used to install and reboot. then i got a hunch, and instead of rebooting after, I edited my xorg.conf to match what were going to be the new settings- it worked perfectly.

Try to install driver through the console with the x-server off. Though with EnvyNG there are no problem if you do everything as the manual says

The effects are standard for compiz. The themes are from gnome-look (dot) org. I set the videodriver with EnvyNG script

it's an Ubuntu 8.4.1 Gnome. So what do you want to know about the video?
