My 10 dollar Phillips over back headphones got circuit braked because the internal amplifier got damaged. The headphone uses I think about 75-300 ohms, which is really powerful for a small headphone.
you need an amplifier becasue the ipods internal one isnt big enough to power your speaker fully...you could make one yourself if your experianced...or just go buy one, it doesnt have to be big but it should make up for the voltage/resistance difference between the ipods amplifier and the speaker

Hi,
A speaker is usually about 8 ohms.
Headphones are higher, like 75-300 ohms.
Because of the speakers lower resistance, an ipod powering it would be taxed much more. It might damage the ipod's internal amplifier.
I would like a more experienced youtube user to check my statements and add his/her own comments, I am not 100% sure.
