You should do a series about the actual process you used in doing this site. It'd be informative for young web designers like me. Something in-depth perhaps.
@TheWebCoder COOL! Do you find Axure takes more time than Visio? I've wanted to use it in several shops, but it seemed that the learning curve for the tool for an entire team stood in the way of adopting the tool (versus re-using Visio wireframe templates). And for training, there aren't classes for the tool. (..or are they?)
@mikechaliy. I found two youtube videos with the music: "Lo Fidelity Allstars - Battleflag" and "Duke Nukem Forever - Come-Get-Some-Trailer Soundtrack"
I often find it much easier to sketch right in OmniGraffle. It's more boxy in some ways but if you decide you want to move a bunch of things around or resize/reproportion it's nice to be able to drag things around instead of starting a whole new sketch.
Sure is flashy, but all I got out of it was sketching and using Omnigraffle -- no actual tips or useful info. But maybe the newbies like it since it has nifty music?
Hysterical. Also makes me curious about using Omnigraffle. I still use Visio. Yes, Visio wireframes can look very polished...but people seem to love Omnigraffle (witness: comments)
@lakarune There is no comparison between visio and omnigraffle as a wire-framing tool. Visio is a waste of time , literally. Try it out for a project, with Konigi templates or other, as Will suggests, and you won't look back.
I use Visio at work - a big telco - and Omnigraffle at home on personal and pro bono projects. OG is fast and fun and easily produces great results, especially when using the Konigi stencil. Visio is slow and you have to work a whole lot harder and longer to produce almost equally impressive results.
Yes! Start by hand. I cannot draw to save my life, not an artist in that way at all. But, I know that sketching by hand, is the right way to start a wireframe.
And then Omnigraffle! Best wireprogramming program, dollar for dollar, out there!
From Corporate ID to UX - I always start with a sketch, sometimes I think 'to Design' is 'to Sketch'. The Omnigraffle work at the end looks slick too!

Nice work mate, just started wire framing after wasting many hours redesigning / coding , ( I find it's a nasty habit to break )
Paper>>Omnigraffle>>> Axure>>Develop / Design are my weapons of choice.
Never used Visio way too expensive

Speaking of prototyping take a look at HotGloo! Nice Interactive web-based Information Architecture tool.

Enjoyed the video but I am even more amused that a related video is Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

Choosing music by the ratio of "motherfucking" per minute. That's how Will rolls.

Great stuff Will! Way to make wireframing sexy. What did you use to screencapture and add the orange pulses? I love that element.
pjbfcp 2 years ago 2
@pjbfcp the screencaps were made with Silverback

@lakarune The look of these wireframes might have more to do with the Konigi stencil set I use :-)

what wireframing application was used at the end of the video? we use powerpoint at work, which is inflexible and completely inefficient.
