I drive a smart car too and they feel so safe. As someone has already pointed out its personal preference as to what car you feel comfortable in. I am very impressed with my little car.
Smart cars are crap. Anyone who owns one, good for you. No body cares. Just like no body cares what I drive it`s all about preference. I like luxury, spacious vehicles that are high up from the ground and that can get around in snow as if there wasn`t even any snow on the ground. That`s why I drive an F150. How much MPG do you with a Smart while towing a house trailer...
I would say the waste is your intellect thinking about this issue while spending $7 a day on cigarettes - while the person in front of you is driving a car that is safer than yours - looks "cooler" - only costs $ 8-12K - and gets 35 mpg ( 60-70 Canada diesel ).
Do some research - if you can read - try to add 40 points to your I.Q. - and then get back to me.
Have to laugh at the video though. Smoker.... probably driving a car that's LESS safe.... and can hardly keep up from what it seems. I'm about 6'2" and fit more comfortable in my Smart than i do in a newer Jeep Cherokee. I've passed my fair share of cars on the highway doing 75mph+. did about 85mph most of the way from here in Pennsylvania down to North Carolina.... and it's limited to 90mph. But yea... continue going to class to still be a moron. I know the video is old, but whatever.
Looks can be deceiving. For example, your comment, "It looks like you'll die if someone hits you" ... is likely founded on the concept of the small cars of a couple decades ago. You know, the ones which didn't offer much in the line of occupant protection. The ones you'd say would crush like a soda can in a collision? The smart fortwo is a 21st Century mirco car and engineered with safety in mind. Do a little research. Then, just maybe, you won't look so foolish in your judgement.
Just wondering ... when you spot a Miata, Saturn Sky, a Corvette, or any other two seater ... do you conclude there's no reason to buy such a thing? Why buy one? It would be easier to say why NOT buy one. Don't buy one if it will be your only car and you need to seat more than two. Don't buy one if you need a utilitarian car ... you just need to get from Point A to Point B. That would be a waste of a good smart. If that's what you want, I can recommend a long list of reliable vanilla cars.
whats the point of having a smart car? whats the point of smoking cigs? thats the real question... remember when i wanted to die young... smh at that one
Smart cars are just ways for people who know nothing about cars to act like they're saving the planet, and it's a basic physics concept that larger objects transfer momentum to smaller ones, so Smart cars will take most of the force and push it onto the driver
@budmorgan23 SO you know physics? Well apparently you know NOTHING about automotive design and safety cages. According to physics, every NASCAR driver that crashes should die, do they? No. Why is because to combat physics they made high tensile steel safety cages, a concept shared by the smart...
@Neonspinnazz30 Nascars have crumple zones around the cage to protect the driver, without these crumple zones the force is pushed onto the cash which also distributes it to the driver. That's also why Nascar tracks have barriers that aren't solid, they act as crumple zones in a way.
@budmorgan23 Exactly, those cars have small but really efficient crumple zones (you try to crash a normal car into a relatively solid-ish wall at 180mph) and as the final effort, a high tensile steel safety cage around the compartment.
@Neonspinnazz30 the only reason that the smart car has descent crash test ratings 3-5 stars is because the tests are conducted with either 2000lb sleds, a wall, or a sled of equal weight to the test car. Now put in place a 6000Lbs SUV like I drive and the outcome would be very very different. you can have all the crumple zones you can but fact is in that small of a car I'm going home and the driver of the smart is either going home in a bag or to the trauma center
@Neonspinnazz30 really because crashing into a wall is A LOT better than crashing into a 6000LB suv when the SUV is moving 30 mph too.
You're right a wall is worse than crashing into a stationary vehicle
You should watch the smart car tests when they crash it into a mercedes 550, which is lighter than my truck, and the smart car flies backward, the change in direction instantly is what snaps necks, breaks faces, and just generally fucks u up
@bertman668 A Mercedes S550 actually weighs about the same as a small SUV.
Yes, the change of direction would snap your neck...But that's why they invented both the airbag and the seatbelt with tensioners a long time ago...Smarts have front, side, curtain, and knee airbags.
Also, it would take a considerable amount of force to kill a human in a crash. As John Stapp personally tested himself, it would take 45+G to kill a human, a high speed car crash tops around 20G.
@bertman668 Actually I can argue that...You know what's better than lab tests? Real world data. In the 4 years smart's been in the USA there have been only 6 confirmed deaths and several hundred more crashes. You can find such data using a mix of FARS and news sources.
Owners post their stories and pictures of their crashes on safeandsmart(.)com. No, I can't argue with physics, but you can't argue with real world data.
@bertman668 The Smart's roof alone can withstand 9,000lbs of force and crush less than 5". Like the one video... with the Smart crashing into the concrete barrier... yes... the car is mangled... but the doors can still be opened, and there's hardly any intrusion into the passenger cabin. In high speed crashes, you're more likely to die from internal bleeding and organ damage than from anything external. That said, a guy in my car club hit an SUV doing 50mph broadside, and walked away unhurt.
First of all it's a novelity car, second the car is so well designed it'll take an impact better then whatever your driving. Should do some research, your sitting inside a metal cage. Third, for me living in the city I can park that thing anywhere. And Fourth, usually smart owners don't buy the smart cars as their only car. But of course ignorance is bliss.
why drive a smart car? to get to my house!

smart cars suck. why spend $20,000 to get 35 mpg?
i spent $500 for my 92 civic in mint shape, and i get 42mpg combined, a few times i have hit 45mpg. so that in my opinion is a better deal.
and did i mention that my civic gets to 100 before a smart car gets to 60? lol
