  • 136 people understand the content in this video. 99 of them work for NetApp, the other 37 work for EMC.

  • If you think those rhymes were dope you ain't seen nothing yet,

Ill crash your rap like a NetApp crashes Symantec BackupExec,

Oh Netapp you wanna talk tough? but you gotta get smacked up,

I'll cut you off like a FAS3200 cuts off VMs in the middle of getting backedup,

Trust me buddy your rhymes dont got the crowd moving,

Ever since we put you in our datacenter we have spent 3 weeks trying to troubleshoot your backup solution,

Netapp you suck at Rap and Data all Day,

Damn I wish we went with EVA.

  • Haha that was pretty cool. Big fan of NetApp myself.

  • Wow, I sure hope this NetApp/EMC beef doesn't spin out of control like Biggie vs Tupac. Even our datacenters won't be safe anymore :(

  • If Data Domain is soo terrible why did you try to buy them?

And why is it that DeDupe is the only technology that you give away for free? I wonder if it's because deduplicating primary data on Netapp arrays is the only way to keep them from filling up with random writes in an emulated block structure that chokes at high utilization rates?

    Probably not.

  • Way to make technology sexy.

  • This doesn't say good things to me about who NetApp considers their customer base to be.

  • ewww that's ice cold...way to go netapps

  • hmmm - seems like a sales kickoff video got acci-posted. Fine for firing up the sales dudes by playing a bit loose with the facts... but isn't Data Domain absolutely killing NetApp in De-Dupe? Try doing something original next time guys - save the parodies for your SKOs.

  • ooh this is so damn funny. Good job NetApp. I am glad to see healthy competition in the Storage market. LOL.... E Square and Double D, you gotta get better ;-)

  • the guy who is trying to be eminem,i got that same shirt as him

  • its like a parody of 8 mile!!i hate it!love eminem!

  • Funny but very juvenille, doubt you will see anything like this come from EMC.

  • my aunt made this video

  • Reminds me of the days when Scott McNealy use to make all these spoofs against Microsoft.

For a company that's really small, it's really loud; and a perfect target for acquisition.

  • Funny. They try to buy an old technology? Now why would they do a thing like that?

  • NetApp won two Telly awards for this video.

  • lol this is the parody of 8 miles last rap battle with em and lotto and them ..

  • NetApp tried to buy Data Domain cuz their dedupe doesn't work but EMC put the big smack down on them. The only winner in this battle is Data Domain who is laughing all the way to the bank!

  • Two different things. Data Domain is for backups. NetApp dedups production, which EMC or DD can't do.

  • Why would you want Dedupe in production. Yeah VMWare workloads can be deduped but you are taking performance away to do the dedupe which is what you DONT want to do in production.

  • AND ....Besides NetAPP states in their own tech releases that Dedupe is not for production. They state, no database data, no Exhange Data, no picture or video, no encrypted data, and Tier 3 (Backup) and low use Tier2 data only. What the hell is left????? Plus you cant have a Snap Schedule on NetApp Dedupe data. ust quoting what they state in their Guarentee Doc.

  • @SubAus hmm - why dedupe in production? Probably for space savings on your production storage appliance andn performance improvement. The 2 reasons I dedupe in production. Deduplicated blocks can live in cache, thus creating a huge performance boost in your VMWare environment. Check it out..

  • I like netapp, their storage technology has saved my data hella times. They send hard drives in the mail and stuff.

  • The DJ is wearing a liverpool top :o)

  • my uncle is in this :)

  • do you know if they have any job openings in database technologies?

  • Oh my word! What the hell was that? :)

  • This is excellent

  • I agree with wakerider, "spend more money educating your salesforce and improving your technology and less money producing rap battle videos. " EMC Celerra dedup for file systems is way better than NetApp by far.

  • That was AWFUL!!

  • ntap rulez! ;) nice vid!

  • Cute vid! Our customers love Netapp. No complaints.

  • Comment removed

  • THIS IS AWESOME!!

  • The only complaint I have about Netapp are their SEs. They don't know jack. The Netapp VARs have all the talent.

  • Spend more money educating your salesforce and improving your technology and less money producing rap battle videos. This video is just like their product, a rip off of the real thing. D DUP from the feet up.

  • Funny video. Some people posting here are definitely taking the video or themselves way too seriously, though! This is just some folks at a tech company having some fun. Cool out.

  • Yo! Off da hook!

  • it's fun to be geeky. I liked the vid.

DeDupe is great - just make sure you upgrade to the stable version first. their support for the past two years has been exceptional.

  • We do software for IBM System I backup to dedupliciation servers - mostly Data Domain so far since that's what the prospects seem to be. Most dedupe devices support CIFS or NFS, which is what we talk to.

The criticism of hash-based deduplication is great if your customers are dunces - it is like saying Mr. Customer, sure 2 plus 2 is 4 today, but someday couldn't it be 5?

Anybody comes and tells you hash based dedupe is not safe is either a pinhead or more likely, thinks that you are.

  • I just tell people having a dedupe collision based on hashing is like winning the lottery - most people don't so it's all good. Of course if you win the dedupe collision lottery - it would costs you money :-)

  • Okay, wait, NETAPP considers its customers and prospects as a bunch of immature wannabes who can read lips?

I have to agree with the apparent slam on VTL technology - this is like putting a feedbag on a Ferrari - but I couldn't understand the rest of the trash talking.

Mumble mumble mumble wave fingers spray saliva mumble mumble. Oh yeah I want to BUY that NOW!

  • Better than the 8 Mile version, nice.

  • Haterz can eat a fat one. you got yo azz N-Tapped biotches! Notorious N.T.A.P. Dedupe in the house! We'll see who's the running joke at the end of this downturn, EMSkeez

Seriously, lighten up you smug nerds. Just because you were never cool in high school doesn't mean you have to hate on creative marketing.

  • I just threw up in my mouth. Like watching Mitt Romney say "Who let the dogs out?"

  • This was well done and entertaining, and probably fairly inexpensive. Very clever, go NetApp!

  • This is way cool, well done! This is supposed to be a joke, ease up people.....what a bunch of haters, Get a life!

  • As an employee who was just laid off at NetApp, I find this video to be not only in incredibly bad taste, but a complete waste of money. How many jobs could have been saved from the "#1 Company to work for in the US" if this video hadn't been made.

Nice to know what my almost 10 years of service got me: this last slap in the face.

  • Considering that it was created by the in-house production team - the answer would be zero jobs saved.

  • Boy, you are an idiot if you don't think "in house production" doesn't cost money. They bill other departments for their services. Everything rolls up to finance.

  • Everything costs money. But if you think this video cost more than a salary - you are way off. Odd that you just joined YouTube today to post these comments. I doubt you are a former employee.

  • off base

  • cheap version of Five Mile. Never thought that was even possible.

  • It's 8 Mile. :)

I hope they got their copyright permission to do this. I'd hate to see them get sued. 8 Mile isn't public domain.

  • parody is protected under the first amendment.

  • Classy.

  • what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

  • agreed - I regret buying NetApp, wish they would put this kinda of time into thier product. I'm sick of calling customer service

  • If you had half a brain you wouldn't have to call customer service, you would be able to read and understand things like any other competent adult.

  • This is the dumbest thing that I have ever seen. I am going to start sending this to my customers as a reason NOT to but NETAP! Sad...

  • You watched it.. don't hate. you only wish you could work at such a great place.. you probably work at EMC..have fun with that..

  • Yea I do. It is a running joke over here today. HA!

  • Agreed.

  • Very cool Video, cool to see something out side of the box.

  • ...

  • NTAP actually spent money on this? Seriously?

  • NetApp has an in-house video crew. Very little money was spent on making this.

  • NTAP yeah you know me!

  • I'm sad to say that I "get it".. Helps that I'm an EMC, Data Domain, and NetApp customer...

  • DrDedupe approves
