firstly, hannibal formed a 3 man deep cresent as a front line. the reserves to keep formation on the font line AS WELL AS the elite african mercinaries were kept in reserve. cavalry on the flanks was correct. they failed to note that about as many as 10,000 romans managed to fight their way out. look it up if you find that hard to believe.

Only beef i have witht this documentary is the whole "sow the earth with salt around Carthage" fallacy. Did u know that at the time salt was so rare and expensive that Legionaries were often paid in salt instead of gold - hence the modern term 'salary' ;)!)Do u really think they would use enourmous quantities of a precious commodity just for symbolism? lol XD

Um okay...they didnt sow the earth with salt as he says. It was too expensive at the time. If they did it at all, it would be a little pinch of salt on the earth as a symbolic gesture.XD

Yes they did sow the earth with salt. Yes it was very expensive at the time. But the battle of Cannae has THE MOST famour tactic in military history and it was, is and will be used in all kinds of warfare, from arguements to full scale wars. The idea of sowing the ground with salt is to completely and utterly wipe Carthage out of memory.

I've seen many battles on the History Channel using Rome Total War, maybe about 15 or so, they were all very good.
