For me this is beautiful singing. But then I don't claim to an opera expert nor do I wish to be one! It's so much easier to enjoy beautiful music without pretense.
My personal preference for the coloratura soprano is ANNA MOFFO...However, I agree sschimel in that we humans are just that HUMAN, and therefore have different opinions...There is no need to badmouth a performer simply because he/she is different. Thank God for VARIETY! How boring life would be without variety!
the thing that callas and moffo share is that they both lost their voices at the Highest peak of their career and their both beautiful! joan sutherland on the other hand, she had a looooooong career(really long).. they all had their share of fame.. i love those three sopranos!!!!
they could've sung together in one opera and made a record, hearing those three voices in one song must feel like heaven!!
BRAVA LA CALLAS!BRAVVA LA SUTHERLAND!BRAVA LA MOFFO!!!!
In the organ world, I often say that most of the snarky organists who play digital organs in country churches but spend most of their time extolling the virtues of French organs they've never played ought to get real. I would say the same thing about opera - Anna Moffo on a bad day still is better than most of the things most of us hear in a local opera production from ostensibly good singers. When did everyone become an armchair expert needing absolute perfection?
My favorite version of this song is that of Kathleen Battle, but this is also beautiful and much better than many others that I have heard despite poor Anna's obvious vocal decline. Lovely high notes.
Moffo was a HUGE talent. Alas, vocal problems descended upon her when Moffo was still quite young. What a pity. Moffo was of course a BEAUTIFUL woman, and her voice at its best was warm, rich and exciting:).
I'm surprised that a voice I love so much could sing SO flat, and let this recording be released.... she does so many wonderful things, but so many less than acceptable......
@Martinowor This was a very late recording and she was having huge vocal problems. This was actually recorded several years after the notorious 1969 Met Lucia. Still, the coloratura is accurate and she never lost the top of her range; it seems to have mostly affected the middle. But IMHO, lesser Moffo is still better than most others.
This is beautiful!! I do think I prefer the Callas version, but I was just listening to Netrebko sing this aria and Moffo is soooooo much better. I lover her tone and the sound of her voice!
This was well after her vocal issues became prominent. However, she still retained her style. She was interesting to me because she lost the middle but not the top of her voice. And she could always sing fioratura.
La Moffo avait une voix pleine de soleil, d'optimisme et chantait d'elle-même ! Le timbre, so gorgious ! Le legato, perfettissimo, tout, elle avait tout !

Ero, instead of trying to be a opera-know-it-all, you should be attacking FILAREDO and his group. He or she, has been dissing Callas in a very vicious way for many months. You have not stopped him. I will not stop until he is stomped. So what you know more about opera than I do. My mission is to stop FILAREDO, not be an opera expert.
Could we please show a little more respect for each other's opinions? There is no such thing as a wrong opinion. For some, Callas is the great singer; for others, it's Nilsson, or Moffo, or Sutherland. It all comes down to a personal preference.
sschimel, you must have missed something. and you must not know mtn. i do agree everyone has their favourite sure but fanatism is another story. he fights a war against the Netrebko groupies but he does nothing better in favour of Callas. Like the Netrebko fans he knows nothing and just bases his posts on hearsay and news articles.
You can love whoever you fancy but claiming they are perfect or greatest ever is just a pretentious claim especially when you defame other great artists.
Maybe because she's another fach compared to Callas? You're starting to sound like the Netrebko fans here with all the unconditional fanatism for Callas.
The two ladies themselves prove to you the point: Moffo was an amazing Musetta to Callas' amazing Mimì, buy the recording.
And for the sake of pointless comparison, Moffo did better at singing Mimì than Callas did at singing Musetta (in her recitals) so again, you have no point.
Ero, I can't believe my Callas ears!!! I thought you were a Callaphile, but I can now see I was wrong. So, you are now saying the BBC has no point in declaring Callas as the greatest soprano of all time?? Is that your point Ero? This is not about me, I never said I was an expert in opera, this is about La Divina, The Great Callas. Yeah Anna Moffo was nice looking, OK. But, better than Callas!!! LMAO!! She sounds like a fifth grade little girl compared to Callas' frightening power.
Callas was amazing, definitely one of the best. But the perfect package doesn't exist and I doubt it ever will.
Callas wasn't technically flawless, she made some repertoire mistakes, she didn't preserve her voice, she didn't have the most reliable top register. Nevertheless, she was THE most amazing actress and had unsurpassed artistry thanks to which she managed to bypass certain limitations of her instrument.
And please, don't make a fool of yourself because Moffo is definitely one of the best sopranos of the past century. If you wanna pick on someone stick to Netrebko and Gheorghiu because Moffo is in another league.
Keep in mind I didn't say Moffo was better, I was talking about fach-crossing.
And for that matter you could say Callas sounds small if you compare her to Ewa Podles, of course.. she's a different fach DUH!
Eva Poodles, OMG!! This is becoming more like the " theater of the absurd!! ".
Somebody please help Ero, there's a meltdown in sight! When did I pick on Moffo? All I said was that Moffo sounded like a little girl, compared to Callas' power. Am I right, yes or no?? Yes, or no??? I know she is near the end of her career here, but I don't see any problems that stick out. I really like her singing here. However, I think she shouldn't have started singing dramatic roles. She is good even as Lucia (I like her lush voice there), and especially in lyric coloratura roles (Violetta, Juliette, Gilda etc.), but she is not for Tosca (I think she sang Tosca if I am correct).
I agree...regarding the "legendary" sopranos, people usually don't agree with my distaste for callas, i personally find her overrated (don't get me wrong, she's got more talent than 8 of me). I loveeeee Moffo's voice. I also have been thinking that Anna Netrebko could do well by following Moffo's example. She has a similar appeal and a similar voice. (It would be nice once Netrebko's sex appeal fades out, ha.)
Tell you what: it may have taken a good many takes or just a few, there is probably splicing, and yes, she DOES have some pitch problems, but Anna Moffo puts on a performance that makes you pay attention to Juliette and the aria. Her voice is a tad "womanly" for a character who is supposed to be only 15, but her technique is still there: listen to those 16th-note triplets!! I would sooner hear her at the end of her career in this aria than Gheorghiu at any stage of her career. Thank you!!
OMG it´s so unbelievable wonderfull, espacally cause i´m this at the moment in my singing lessons!anna moffo was and will be one of the best singers ever
I have to say it's difficult to hear her like this, she is one of my all time favorite sopranos but clearly is having problems and not yet even 50. Still, despite a faster, uneven vibrato and some pitch problems, she manages the aria with her unique beauty.
My God, I'm amazed she could even make it through this aria in one piece in 1975 (don't jump on me, I lived and breathed Anna Moffo in my early years). This was roughly the time when she was starting to croon her way through Thais and L'amore dei tre re on RCA. There's a posting of a remarkable 1972 Munich recording of "O luce di quest'anima" from Linda di Chamonix on here that makes you scratch your head and wonder how someone could be so on and so off over a period of ten years.
I've heard an earlier version of Moffo singing this and it is much better in terms of her vocal technique. Does anyone have the mid- to early 60's recording they could post??
i hate it when sopranos do that scooping thing when they use a lower note to reach the top note (she did it towards the end for high C or D at the end)..
Musoph21 honey. It's called a portamento and it's a bel canto technique. It's not just sopranos who do it, but tenors, basses, altos - everyone (if they sing bel canto style correctly) knows how to do it and puts it into practise. It prevents them having to jump their voices around like a vocal trampolene.
well thanks for educating me. however i thought portamentos are suppose to be sliding from one note to the next (smooth tranistion). It sounded like she hopped from the lower note to the higher notes. I've only heard sopranos do this.
LOL I continue to educate myself in opera. I am now very acquainted with portamentos. I guess while they are done depending on the taste of the composer and the singer..i guess i just like hearing the notes sung without portamentos. Thanks for enlightening me.
But singing bel canto without portamento is like swimming water. While singing without portameno is desirable in Classical opera, such as Mozart, bel canto, as divinetta says, requires it. Otherwise, it lacks slancio (con slancio means with impetus) and cantilena. Donzetti, Bellini, Verdi, and Puccini, not to mention the other Italian composers of bel canto and verismo, would be nothing without portamento. And French music of the 19th and early 20th century calls for portamento as well.
This is beautiful, but I do think it's a little pitchy in places...? I'm not sure if it's really the intonation or just her vowels pulling the pitch around. All the same, it's quite lovely. Viva Moffo. :)

I do LOVE, ADORE, WORSHIP Callas but it doesn't make her the best in the world.
What is the best afterall? Someone that can sing anything under the sun perfectly?
Well nobody can stretch trhough all scores with the same precision, artistry and vocal splendor.
For example, Callas did very little Mozart because her voice was the wrong fit and she did no Baroque repertoire at all.
She did excel in many things she did but so have other sopranos.
