I love how Mary doesn't give a shit about Sir Richard's complaints of her spending all her time with Matthew. One scene later she's already back to sitting beside Matthew and talking to him and ignoring Carlisle, despite his recent outburst about the matter.
@julieanna88 Oh my Gosh, I thought I was the only one who thought that it was completely out of character for Lord Grantham. He is always one to speak out about any sort of injustice and yet he keeps quiet in regards to his own daughter!
Matthew is so cute with his earnest, "Can I help?" He's trying so hard to be supportive and awesome despite without admitting he's still desperately in love with her and wants her to marry him instead of Carlisle. He doesn't pull the nothing-more-than-a-supportive-friend thing off very well, not to anyone with eyes...
@collegeopera Well, at least the Cowboy would probably not have approved of the Czar and his family, including the children, being murdered (as Branson exclaimed in Episode 4, saying something about these things have to happen), not to mention the millions of others murdered in Russia during their horrible "Revolution". Branson has too many character flaws to be likeable. I agree with the Earl, that he seduced Sybil, and one day she'll wake up and say, "Oh no, what did I do?"
@Muhaw20 Good point! I was not thrilled about his accepting of the Czar's family being killed. Sybil after all is from a noble family and he seemed willing to overlook that.
I'm still not convinced that the Earl was judging on those flaws (he couldn't know could he?). He focused solely on Branson's social status and pretty much nothing else. He probably felt an American from the West would be rich and interesting enough for Mary. After all, his wife is an American heiress.

I must agree with collegeopera in that the Lord Grantham doesn't know of these flaws before he judges Branson not good enough to be with Sybil, he does focus purely on the social class issue. He still never calls him by his name or anything, he always just refers to him as "The Chauffeur"
I have to say, of the great romantic moments these two have had, my favorite scene of them is on the shoot, laughing together. They just seem so damn happy to be in each other's company.

The perfect end to Christmas Day. It had everything. Honesty, courage, forgiveness, a willingness to risk together...and above all deep love. And there's still enough darkness and dark characters for series 3 to be even better. My money is on Carlisle to choose the wedding day to expose Lady Mary's past mistake.
