  • Welcome to Columbia the city in the sky!

  • Bioshock Infinite FTW!!! Can't wait to visit Columbia, 2 years!!!!

  • its sounded so scary on the bioshock trailer

  • COLUMBIA WILL RAISE OVER THE SKY!!!

  • The song looks like it is featured in the trailer for Bioshock :Infinite

  • @bfett23

Right, so I've just been informed. THANKS!

  • @CurzonRoad I must be living in a parallel (more likely, perpendicular) universe, because I have no idea what Bioshock Infinite is about. But I do know this old song; I recall Marilyn Horne's singing it at a Carnegie Hall recital. Thanks, Doug!

  • @meltzerboy

    Marilyn Horne?!

    Wow!

    THAT must have been something!

    Thank you, Nate!

  • @meltzerboy I'll do a quick up to date for you. Bioshock Infinite is a steam punk game set in 1912. It is due out 2012. The game includes features like, a flying city, being about to hit people with a wrench then electrocute them with your hand, and listening to patriotic tunes. This game will be out just in time for the 100 year anniversary of events of the Columbia. ( Please note that this is a very commercial worthy post and is meant to entertain and inform. Good day.)

  • @OriginalAlphathewolf Thanks for the info!

  • lol Bioshock

  • Welcome to Columbia!

  • @bfett23

    Sorry ???

  • @CurzonRoad its a bioshock reference

  • @TheLegendaryDelta

    COOL!

    THANKS!

  • @CurzonRoad

Yeah like others have said it's a song heard in the BioShock Infinite Trailer.

By this time next year. This video will probably have over 100,000 views and like 200 comments saying "OMG Dis is a BioShock song!" So I think you have yourself a soon to be popular video.

  • @TrollDemon - Obviously, similar to what happened to Dream and Beyond The Sea.

  • @CurzonRoad This song was included in the trailer of Bioshock Infinite. If you're not a gamer, then nevermind.

  • @CurzonRoad he's talking about bioshock: infinite, this song is played during the trailer

  • @bfett23 Woo! cant wait for it! taking to the skies, leaving the seas!

  • @bfett23 ironic that the composer of this little ditty is who old sander is based upon.

  • @orybloodmyre I actually thought the guy listening to it in the trailer was Sander Cohen. Isn't it possible?

  • @Southparknscrubs who knows from how they keep throwing who owns the bioshock rights its just as crazy has cohen so who knows

  • @Southparknscrubs Not possible! This is set in 1912. Sander Cohen was born in 1910. Unless like jack they speeded up his growth! hehe.

  • @bfett23 columbia here we come!

  • Rollicking!

  • Brilliant!

  • Another great post!

  • Uproaringly fun record. How must the audience have reacted when they heard this for the first time! It gives one an idea of what the excitement was all about, once upon a time on Broadway!

  • Everytime he sings it, the line is clearly "Grand old rag"--apparenly that was what was originally written

  • I like this version better than the other ones. My dad has this on his computer and i listen to it all the time. some kids i know dont even know what a record player is, its sad really.

  • Is this a wax cylinder recording? IF it is thats amazing sound quality for such and old recording!

  • Not a wax cylinder, but a 1905 disc, and yes... amazing sound! THANK YOU!

  • From the Library of Congress website: The original lyric for this perennial George M. Cohan favorite came, as Cohan later explained, from an encounter he had with a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg. The two men found themselves next to each other and Cohan noticed the vet held a carefully folded but ragged old flag. The man reportedly then turned to Cohan and said, "She's a grand old rag." Cohan thought it was a great line and originally named his tune "You're a Grand Old Rag."

  • How did you come across all of these amazing records?

  • Billy Murray is one of my favorite singers of the acoustic era. I lived in Denver for many years. I can remember Murray's mother's house ( she died there in the thirties) - not far from what is now Speer Blvd. I believe the house was torn down a number of years back. I couldn't find it last visit to Denver.

  • He says grand old rag, its grand old flag. =0

  • When the public disapproved of the word "rag," composer George M. Cohan pulled all original sheet music. Later versions employed the more patriotic "flag." At least.... so the story goes. Cheers, etc.

  • What great quality for a 102 year old record or something they use back then.

  • Yes, the recording companies were really able to capture quite a lot... even 100+ years ago. Thanks for your comment!

  • I'm surprised at the use of the word "rag" - it must have taken on a different meaning in the past century.

  • Yes, George M. Cohan quickly had all original sheet music pulled after the public protested the use of the word "rag." Later versions employed the more patriotic "flag." So the story goes. Thank you!

  • Interesting! Thanks for the piece of history.

  • Is this recording really 102 years old? It is astonishing quality.

    Really enjoyed listening to it.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Yes, it is indeed 102 years old. Billy Murray, one of the early recording artists, made many, many, many records for many, many different labels up through the 1920s-1930s. George M. Cohan was perhaps the biggest name on Broadway a century ago. Thank you for tuning in. All Best. Cheers, etc
