  • How cold hardy?

Require frost to "Sweeten" like native Persimmons?

  • I want one of those persimmon trees.

  • @megamunchit2008 you know, they can be grown from seed. Just buy a persimmon fruit, eat it, plant the seed, and there you go! That's what i did, anyway...

  • @FreeBeDrug Not a bad idea, except that it snows here in Canada.

  • @megamunchit2008 it snows here in America too. What i do is i keep the plant in a pot. When it gets too cold outside, i take it inside. And then when it gets warm enough outside, i take the plant back out again. That way the plant can avoid the cold.

  • @FreeBeDrug I see...Is there any particular type of soil I should use for this plant? And what state are you from. I'm from Ontario and the winters here can get very cold and very long. 4 months of cold winter that can reach -35 degrees celsius.

  • @megamunchit2008 I am from Georgia. True, i am from the south. However, since i go to university and don't take the plant with me to school, the plant stays indoors about 5 months out of the year (from November to May) at my parents house, while they take care of it for me. i don't think a cold winter should be a problem as long as you can keep the plant at room temperature, indoors, with adequate sun light and watering.

  • @FreeBeDrug But i might be wrong. I have been to Washington DC and it gets VERY cold, and you live even north of that. I would say, just give it a try. You have nothing to lose. If it dies, then it dies. But just imagine if it lives...

  • @FreeBeDrug Hey man, thanks for the advices, however, I'm wondering: What to do when the tree becomes as big as the one in the video? Because, will the tree die in the winter? And since summers are short here in Canada, will the tree have any fruits? Like, how long will it take for a fruit to grow out? One more thing, how long will it take for the tree to grow? I thought trees could take up to 100 years or more just to be fully grown. Again, thanks for the advice.

  • @megamunchit2008 To keep my tree short i carefully prune it. I cut the branches so that the tree stays at one height, something like 3 1/2 ft tall. I have yet to prune it, but cutting it should be fine as long as a few leaves for the plant are kept for photosynthesis. This winter, all the leaves on my plant fell off. i knew it was still healthy, and sure enough, it grew its leaves back. You will prob exp the same thing. so don't worry if it loses its leaves, it'll get them back..

  • Respond to this video... I think that the tree won't die in the winter....i don't know how long it takes to fruit. Wikipedia says " A 1–2 year old persimmon tree bears fruit within 7–8 years. " So, maybe 10 years to bear fruit? In my case, fruit isn't the aim of growing the plant. I grow a persimmon tree to have a persimmon tree, not to feed myself. If i wanted persimmon fruit, i'd buy myself some. But you may disagree. For me, fruit on a tree is just an extra plus to having a tree.

  • Respond to this video... But i figure that fruit probably will come. I also grow plants as compensation for getting old. The time is gonna pass whether you grow a plant or not, so you might as well grow one. I don't know how long it takes the fruit to mature. Like i said, maybe 10 years. But that's the beauty of growing plants. If you take care of them right, i believe you can have it for your entire life! For that reason, i think plants are better than pets.

  • Respond to this video... Lastly, prune the roots and change the soil, to keep the plant contained and vigorous and you should be good. Hope this helps.

    Any more questions?

  • @FreeBeDrug Nope, that is everything. Thank you so much. I really appreciate this. I'm going to grow me a persimmon tree. I hope it all works out.

  • mmm goooood!
