The ending makes you realize how fuck-up life is, Pacino character understood that. DeNiro and crew weren't bad guys, they just wanted the simple things in life everyone deserves and that's having enough money to enjoy life like the rich 1%. The only evil person in their crew was Waingro, he was pure evil. DeNiro and crew didn't want to live the life of the 99% which is a life of slavery. In this scene Pacino character was in reflection of his own life, his troubled daughter and troubled wife.
This scene is amazing it speaks to you in a way that can't be described in words. When the music starts to play when Deniro starts to die both pacino and Deniro communicated with their expressions how they both felt. It was like Deniro although was dying he felt finally at peace. I don't think he liked his work anymore and all he really wanted was a normal life. Pacino in a way as well. It was fate and neither wanted to kill each other. In another lifetime they wouldve been friends.
the last shot where pacino holds roberts hand is just pure art ... i wish that would be available as a poster or a painting or at least a hd screen wallpaper ...
@BrotherAlphonsusMary I just had to say something. I dont remember Stansfield showing Leon any respect at all. Quite the opposite I remember him jeering at him in a smirk, then a look of confusion as Leon hands him 'something from Matilda'. Perhaps you mistaked this moment for 'respect'.
This a very moving ending because it was hard to see Robert De Niro go after putting so much effort into everything, really. Would of had the same effect if Al Pacino had died. On both sides of the law, it ain't easy.
Last scene conveys utmost respect between Pacino and Bobby but also between Neil and Vincent. Despite being on opposing sides of the law, they had a mutual admiration for each other. It's a great moment when Neil extends his hand when he's dying in a form of camaraderie/brotherhood and Vincent gives him last moments on this earth some comfort and feeling. Add the super score and you have a beautiful moment.
This ending is terrible in my personal opinion because it was an easy way out to end a film. Deniro should have escaped alive. Pacino's character in a realistic situation would have been toasted.
@NERV1233 Everyone has their own opinions but I think a happy everyone gets what they want and turns out ok kind of ending is cheesy. It lets you like both the protagonist and antagonist instead of the same old good guy and bad guy script. It isn't so often that in a movie you build a relationship with all characters involved but this movie did that great. When they were having coffee together that also kind of told you, someone has to go down thats just the way it is.
I saw this movie at a very young age around 7 and I didn't know what was going on in the movie. But I remember the sadness I felt for Deniro. And this song was always stays with me. It takes back to that night I first saw this movie.
Now that I have seen this, I understand more the ending in Leon. The respect Stansfield shows for Leon at his dying moment is the same. Awesome ending to this movie.
tragic, poetic, and simply EXCELLENT filmmaking...what other actors / directors STRIVE to be compariable to...HEAT is easily 1 of the best movies ever made.
This ending used to almost make my eyes water as a kid...not because of it's action, just about how remarkable it ended. Once they held hands all i could say was "WOW!"
Couldn't say it better myself. I had always told my friends to watch it, but they never would cuz of it's length. When they finally did (at seperate times mind you) all three said they gave a standing ovation at the end.
How many of you experience a Sergion Leone moment @ 5:35? I swear whenever I see his face it throws me back to Henry Fonda final duel with Charles Bronson in Once Upon a Time in The West.
These movies are just BADASS! Love the emotional ending.
but i think one thing they could've added was right at the end, when deniro dies and you see the back of pacino, have all those lights grow really bright again, then credits.
Because he needed to get on the plane and couldn't risk all those cops around the building. It was safer to run and leave everyone and everything including the car behind.
Someone wrote here that Pacino was almost crying in the death scene...I have to disagree. I think he had some respect for McCauley (DeNiro), but at the same time Pacino knew that he was dealing with a psychopath who could kill with no remorse. A kind of grudging respect maybe, for another human being, however flawed. But I didn't see any tears, he didn't even turn to look at the dying man, just held his hand till the life was gone...and looked away.
@victorianguy i dont think mccauley was a psychopath, i see it in a diff way mcCauley was dedicated to his job taking scores as hanna was to taking down criminals, although i think mcCauley would kill for his purpose.I think u nailed it down perfectly though explaining the mutual respect they had. It was evident in the restaurant scene how these guys respected each other despite being on the diff sides of the law
you definitely have to watch the whole movie to actually understand the impact of this ending and i compare this movie to The Thin Red Line as in that the movie or the filmmakers aren't telling you what to think but instead letting you decide whats right/whats wrong and who actually ended up winning at the end
Yeah best ending to a film ive seen ever, the action is good the tension is good the setting is good the music is good speaking of music, does anyone know the song at the end, were Di Niro dies?
it doesn't make sense, why would de niro's character who was supposed to be such a prefessional choose to come out from his cover when he could hear the plane coming in and the lights therefor going on, plus pacino should've been blinded by the lights rather than helped by them, de niro should have been able to see pacino better!
De Niro's character wanted to die. He lost everything: his best friends, his life (he'd do life in prison), and he left the only woman that loved him, so what point was there for him to keep on living. And he and Al Pacino hit it off in the cafe, so he'd rather die by Pacino than anything else.
He hadn't really lost his best friends because they were never his best friends to begin with ("...anything you can't walk out on in 30 seconds..."). He wouldn't do life if he got away. He still had the girl as far as I can remember (yeah he walked away from her because of the heat but he could've gotten her back easilyand fled to a different country to live his life. I'd say he had something to live for!
plus, you have to remember, Neil HAD to make a move, his 'exit' window was right there. he paid $165k for it. It was right there waiting for him and the only thing between him and that exit was Pacino.
Neil's only mistake was Waingro. The heat was around the corner and he wound up living up to that leaving his girl but couldn't pass up Waingro. That cost him everything.
DeNiro carried a HK USP .45 ACP in the first half and a SIG 226 in the second half of movie. Al carried a Colt Commander compact 1911 wih Ivory grips.
I love the way Pacino is almost crying, you can see the tears welling up in his eyes because in a perfect world these two charactors could of been the best of friends,a truly AMAZING ending (prob my favorite ever) and also one of the saddest as nothing has got better in either of these charactors lifes in fact they got worse but at the end of the day humanity shines through right at the very end, stunning in every way.
lol, guys it's not the most saddest moments in film history.... its about respect and honour. It isn't sad. One of thems gotta go. Thats the way it goes.
I don't want to sound like a grumpy old man or anything but this is A great ending to a great movie, I wish holywood would shoot more scenes like this were there is no dialouge for several scenes it is just the plot climaxing into a perfect ending!
This is the most saddest ending in history. It really is. Makes me cry almost every time. Like it's wierd because McCauley was the bad guy but still we feel very sorry when he passes. This movie is one of the top 10 movies of all time. I'm not joking. Leaves you with a kind of bitter sweet feeling. And that is maybe the best feeling in the world to feel after you've watched a movie.
Exactly, one of the BEST endings of any movie. The sheer brilliance of this is unbelievable. They both realized they were the same exact person, just on opposite ends of the law. There was mutual respect, nothing personal, just business. Combine this, with 2 legendary actors, great writing, and one HELL of a musical score. Just.... wow.
how cool is the ending!!!! michael manns best film? if you like this you will like an earlier film he done called thief starring james caan, its quite similar to heat!!!
Yes...but in common between these two men, the crook and the cop...both were very lonely men, for different reasons...McCauley always on the run and disciplined by his "30 - second rule"...Hanna an obsessive predator devoted to his career and on a very shaky third marriage...whenever McCauley and his new girlfriend are together the haunting theme of Terje Rypdal is played...in the end he faces the ultimate moment of loneliness reaching out for the hand of the man who has just shot him
@streetbmx408 I saw it as both characters felt they had more in common with each other than anyone else in their lives, as established during their conversation at the restaurant. So, like Vargas37 said, "a mutual respect at his dying moment." But that's just my take on it.
yea and I can't get into your comment..."seriously" - it's a MOVIE, and an amazing one at that. We watch movies to escape the reality that we have to deal with day to day. Why should it matter if it is as realistic as possible, it is a masterpiece and as you can see, respected by many. By the way, I think if you were being pursued by police then you would probably keep running too...having you seen those cop shows on tv? That seems to be what the suspects do most of the time.
One of the best Crime Drama movies ever maid, i saw this in the theater when i was 15, and i was blown away, it has a very powerful ending, they have respect for each other, HEAT 10 stars...........
this movies so bad ass i found this in the hagie store in iraq and watched the bank scene like 50 times on deployment LOL that scene makes u feel like u can actually pull that off. and of course this scene is beautiful.. !!! awesome movie.
Yes, Heat is a classic and one of my favorites. My one small complaint is that Mann tries to pack just a little bit too much into this movie. I think it could have done without the backstory to Dennis Haysbert's character and Waingro killing the prostitute, for example. We already know Waingro is a sick, evil mutha. I did like the look at the parallel lives of the criminals and the cops, and the bank shootout scene with the sound of the gunfire echoing from the buildings, just awesome.
yep, such a simple gesture but so meaningful, de Niro simply wanting to feel some human warmth for his last seconds. And the last shot is a true painting. God i love this film!
he didn't care about pacino, the both do what they do... di niro just got greedy in the end and came up at the bottom. But both pretty much had nothing to loose.
EPIC ENDING 2 an EPIC MOVIE! I hope michael mann has another epic crime thriller planned after public enemies is released. I'm sure public enemies will be bad 2 the bone but I have the feeling he has a big surprise for all of us someday.
I love this movie man!! it's definitely one of a kind! I also liked Collateral and Miami Vice and now I am looking forward 2 seeing PUBLIC ENEMIES! I hope Michael Mann makes another yet epic crime thriller with some very good actors such as Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, Kevin Bacon,Alec Baldwin, Harvey Keital, Kevin Spacey and the list goes on!
Christopher Nolan has praised "Heat" from the beginning. He has said on many occasions that he looked to this movie for inspiration.
I do agree though that this movie is on an epic scale the likes of which has not been seen since outside of maybe "Saving Private Ryan". Funny how those two epic movies (in my opinion the 2 of the best movies of the last 15 years) got snubbed by the Oscars. Shit "Heat" didn't even get nominated.
Yeah I'd agree with that. The movie is pretty overrated but I still like it. I try not to think about the "best movie ever" claims that some of the fans have stated and just look at it for what it was. It was a top notch action/thriller/summer spectacle. Joker is amazing and everyone else was sort of .. meh. The IMAX scenes were amazing too. It was one of the best movies last year.
"Heat" however is one of the best movies I've ever seen. No doubt it is on a more epic scale than TDK.
The reason Mann's depiction of crime is so insightful is because he immerses himself in criminology to the point he participates in police ride alongs as a civilian observer with police from the passenger seat for a first hand perspective of reality.
Mann translates these experiences into cinematic stories giving the audience a unique telescope into the unimaginable events that can't described on the evening news and rarely breach the suburban borders where people view his films.
Does any one know where the final scene music comes from? This was the Best Movie I have watched that has true army battle drills during a fire fight. A fantastic moive to watch with suround sound on full volume, try it......
The genious thing about this scene is when i first saw it, i honestly ddnt know who would come out alive. As Pacino and De Niro's characters were both likeable and became attached to both thier story. In some films you always know good will win, but this you honestly don't know.
Such an awesome ending......the tears just trickled down my face before i even knew it...
the icing on the cake has to be when 'god moving over the face of water' begins to play as pacino shakes de niro's hand and looks off into the distance....
you idiot both men opooisite sides of the law had high repect and sympathy for each other. One guy trying to stop the other. it was a personal batle as both men, were good at the jobs tha they did. too many uckin critics out there, and half of them cant even watch a film for 5 mins without falling asleep. thn saying its shit!!!!!!!!
None of this would have ever happened if he followed through as plan and kept driving on the highway! Sad ending, should have just got back in the car and drive off.
Mr. Mann filmed seemingly every LAST aspect of this masterpiece with breathtaking brilliance. A microcism: about midway through, Al charges forward, only to find nothing on the other side. The 2 camera angles, the deafening silence of the moment - sheer genius.
good call! every time i watch that sequence i think about how it was probably fully intentional and something that Mann surely slaved over to get perfect.
The ending makes you realize how fuck-up life is, Pacino character understood that. DeNiro and crew weren't bad guys, they just wanted the simple things in life everyone deserves and that's having enough money to enjoy life like the rich 1%. Yes...but in common between these two men, the crook and the cop...both were very lonely men, for different reasons...McCauley always on the run and disciplined by his "30 - second rule"...Hanna an obsessive predator devoted to his career and on a very shaky third marriage...whenever McCauley and his new girlfriend are together the haunting theme of Terje Rypdal is played...in the end he faces the ultimate moment of loneliness reaching out for the hand of the man who has just shot him
victorianguy 2 years ago 4
That was very well put.
GoFuckYourselfBiatch 2 years ago 2
@streetbmx408 I saw it as both characters felt they had more in common with each other than anyone else in their lives, as established during their conversation at the restaurant. So, like Vargas37 said, "a mutual respect at his dying moment." But that's just my take on it.
jackbauer91191 1 year ago
yea and I can't get into your comment..."seriously" - it's a MOVIE, and an amazing one at that.
Great movie

Yes, Heat is a classic and one of my favorites. My one small complaint is that Mann tries to pack just a little bit too much into this movie. I think it could have done without the backstory to Dennis Haysbert's character and Waingro killing the prostitute, for example. We already know Waingro is a sick, evil mutha. I did like the look at the parallel lives of the criminals and the cops, and the bank shootout scene with the sound of the gunfire echoing from the buildings, just awesome.

you may have a point there, its still a great film though isnt it!!!

God, when they grab eachothers hand i always get so emotional! :D I love this movie.
letmyloveopenthedoor 2 years ago
yep, such a simple gesture but so meaningful, de Niro simply wanting to feel some human warmth for his last seconds. And the last shot is a true painting. God i love this film!
pistolpete75 2 years ago
thats the part in real life where the guy would try to take your gun, since they are still close to you.... haha. but in the movie its great.
oregonnich 2 years ago
well that's the whole point of the movie isn't it? that he doesn't so much want to hurt Pacino as save himself
cosmonaut242 2 years ago 2
he didn't care about pacino, the both do what they do... di niro just got greedy in the end and came up at the bottom.

Streetwise39 2 years ago 2
I love this movie man!! it's definitely one of a kind! I also liked Collateral and Miami Vice and now I am looking forward 2 seeing PUBLIC ENEMIES! I hope Michael Mann makes another yet epic crime thriller with some very good actors such as Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, Kevin Bacon,Alec Baldwin, Harvey Keital, Kevin Spacey and the list goes on!

Good Michael Mann casting choices. I'd like to see Depp Gosling or Ed Norton in one of his movies.

fuck the oscars. HEAT is a masterpiece, one thousand times better than the overrated "the dark knight".
this movie is so perfect, a classic of all times. cast, direction, music, sound, etc. nothing fails.
i think that the ending is like a homage to the classic ending of "Bullit".
lesassassins 2 years ago 7
Why hate on "The Dark Knight"?
Christopher Nolan has praised "Heat" from the beginning. He has said on many occasions that he looked to this movie for inspiration.
I do agree though that this movie is on an epic scale the likes of which has not been seen since outside of maybe "Saving Private Ryan". Funny how those two epic movies (in my opinion the 2 of the best movies of the last 15 years) got snubbed by the Oscars. Shit "Heat" didn't even get nominated.
miggizle85 2 years ago
i didn't like the dark knight, i liked the joker parts but the rest was way overrated by far.
oregonnich 2 years ago
Yeah I'd agree with that. The movie is pretty overrated but I still like it. I try not to think about the "best movie ever" claims that some of the fans have stated and just look at it for what it was. It was a top notch action/thriller/summer spectacle. Joker is amazing and everyone else was sort of .. meh. The IMAX scenes were amazing too. It was one of the best movies last year.
"Heat" however is one of the best movies I've ever seen. No doubt it is on a more epic scale than TDK.

exactly what i thought...

See Steve Mc Queens ' BULlITT"
Still This Is Better, Easilly and the Quotes....
" Clean up Go Home!!!" "Dont waste my muthaf**king time" "We Just Got Made "
" Their M.O ...... is that there GOOD"
Michael Mann is one of the greats
sbarnard73 2 years ago 2
The reason Mann's depiction of crime is so insightful is because he immerses himself in criminology to the point he participates in police ride alongs as a civilian observer with police from the passenger seat for a first hand perspective of reality.
Mann translates these experiences into cinematic stories giving the audience a unique telescope into the unimaginable events that can't described on the evening news and rarely breach the suburban borders where people view his films.
A master.

A masterpiece...truly a great piece of art. This isn't just an action movie...so much deeper meaning. Easily my favorite movie.

Thank you Michael Mann for this Epic movie.

The music that plays over the end is Moby "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" followed by Kronos Quartet "Heat".

The genious thing about this scene is when i first saw it, i honestly ddnt know who would come out alive. As Pacino and De Niro's characters were both likeable and became attached to both thier story. In some films you always know good will win, but this you honestly don't know.

Mr. Mann filmed seemingly every LAST aspect of this masterpiece with breathtaking brilliance. A microcism: about midway through, Al charges forward, only to find nothing on the other side. The 2 camera angles, the deafening silence of the moment - sheer genius.
phantomlord54 3 years ago 2
good call! every time i watch that sequence i think about how it was probably fully intentional and something that Mann surely slaved over to get perfect.
