This is all nice and good, but if you ever met Bill Wells, you'd realize he needs to have that "little talk" for real. He is the definition of the word "Luddite" when it comes to music. He once told Tony Trishka and his band (right after they won a Grammy) they couldn't play in his "Pickin' Parlor" because Tony had an electric instrument in his band. (He could've had Trisha for 250 BUX!!). Guys like Bill Wells are what hold back B'grass. Thank God for those who strive against that backwardness!
@PappyCaligula . It makes perfect sense to me that an old man would like the kind of bluegrass he can relate to, and say that Tony Trishka can't do it right with electric instruments. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but if you knew much about the history of Bluegrass, you would know that musical conservatism is integral to the genre.
Doc Watson is 86 years old. He uses a pickup AND for decades, used T.Michael Coleman on ELECTRIC bass. Doc plays music BEFORE so-called "original bluegrass" was conceived. NO, Bill Wells is being a Luddite for the sake of being an A-Hole. Instead of trying to deny others the right to be heard, he and his own band should "practice a little more" don't you think?...Out of tune, out of TOUCH!. He can play anyway HE likes BUT don't deny others because of some perceived "loyalty" to Monroe!
@PappyCaligula "out of tune, out of touch" may be true, but if it is, then I can't see how someone with these qualities would be able to "deny others". If anyone is marginalized in today's music world, it is the "traditional"(in every sense of the word) bluegrass musician. Hence, many have heard of Tony Trishka, but very few know or care about local traditional acts.
@wrint I see your point excep[t that these "unknowns" probably try alot harder. Some folks just don't have very good talent and the only thing I can think of is that Wells doesn't want to be shown up/look bad. There's "traditional" and then there's just plain "bad" and that's where Wells in his little West Columbia World choses to live. It's an insult to others like Asheville's Narrow Gauge who play VERY traditional and yet "very well".
Ginger, thanks for sending this one. It was very good also. I have really enjoyed listening to all of your videos. U sure do have a bunch on here. I give U 5 *****.
