  • thanks that worked

  • My problem is different, now a clip that gets reversed instantly becomes offline.

  • @CombineHgrunt If the clip is divx xvid or mp4, it is likely the clip is too compressed to apply effects to it.

  • @guerillabill The weird thing about this problem is, just a few days ago, the same clip worked perfectly fine, and I neither moved it around, nor renamed or deleted it, it just started not working with Vegas 2 days ago, which makes no sense since to me, don't know it that comes from a Patch or anything.

  • @CombineHgrunt The reason the file doesn't work now is you have allowed Apple to update the quicktime player on your computer. The new quicktime codec (which automatically updated by apple when you update itunes or other apple product), is not always backward compatible with older mp4/mov files.

  • My problem is different, now a clip that gets reversed instantly becomes offline.

  • i have another problem because my audio peaks are not showing could you help me

  • @CodCraftTech If the clip is mp4, the quicktime codec on your computer is not compatible with the clip. You can use the technique I show in my YouTUbe video, 'Solve Mp4 video problems using the free Cineform converter'

  • I clicked on closed media files but it still says media offline

  • @TmuThe Media offline problems can occur when editing mp4/mov files that do not conform to the quicktime codec which Vegas uses to display and edit mp4/mov files. The easy solution is to convert the mp4/mov files to true avi files, using the technique I show in my YouTube video 'Solve Mp4 mov video problems using this free Cineform converter'

  • thanks so much, helped a great deal, that was pissing me off so much

  • Thanks!

  • Excellent. thank you.

  • When I reverse a clip on Vegas, the audio from the clip disappears, how can I prevent this?

  • @Zangoo5e When you right click on a clip and choose 'reverse', the video should run backward, but the audio stays the same. To reverse the audio, right click on the audio clip and choose reverse.

If your audio disappears, it means the audio file is either compressed in a weird codec, or doesn't support adding effects. You can resolve this by using avi files, not mp4.

  • thanks,helped alot:)

  • I have a question , AC3 audio is not working in sony vegas 8, I get a message " streams attributes could not be determined " what does that supposed to mean ?

  • @sistersoh ac3 requires a separate plugin for older versions of vegas, but AC3 is supported in Vegas 8. Apply the latest update available for Vegas 8 to see if that installs the required AC3 encoder. If that doesn't work, convert the AC3 file to wav.

  • @guerillabill

does the update upgrade vegas to 9 ? ( I don't want vegas 9) , if it doesn't where can I donwload the update for vegas 8 ?

  • @sistersoh The patch doesn't upgrade vegas to version 9. It just replaces the quicktime driver for Sony Movie Studio in version 8.

  • TY so much for the info. I was having problems when rendering my large files & they kept going offline even if i wasn't doing anything else on my computer. I'm testing it out as we speak but i believe this will cure my problems so ty.

  • My media is still offline, after I conduct this change-any Ideas why??

    Thanks

  • @v13423 Media offline problems can occur when editing mp4/mov files that do not conform to the quicktime codec which Vegas uses to display and edit mp4/mov files. • Thanks a lot! :)

  • Perfect, thanks!

  • Thanks so much! Exactly what I was looking for!

  • Big thanks :D

  • THANK YOU VERY MUTCH!

  • Thank you :) FINALLY!

  • thank you!

  • The problem I am having is that a couple files (mp4) that i attempt to import say media offline from the beginning. while some people are experiencing issues relating to the codecs where they get audio and no video - my file will not open in the trimmer and will not be inserted into the timeline. Other mp4s have no problem and Ive been unable to resolve this issue with Vegas 9.0pro b

  • @lilfrnz Mp4 files rely on the quicktime codec, and the problem is newer versions of quicktime are not always compatible with all mp4/mov files. The easy solution is to use Cineform Neoscene to convert mp4 files to true avi files. Or uninstall quicktime from your computer, and install an older version of quicktime.

  • THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH

  • Thank you for help !

  • Thank you !

  • @Jollen7879 The problem is with the version of quicktime on your computer. Blame it on apple, as quicktime is not compatible with all versions of mp4/mov videos produced by non apple devices. To resolve this, uninstall quicktime from your computer, and download and install an older version of Quicktime. Version 7.3.1.170 usually works well.

  • Why do I have a feeling your replies to peoples issues with this problem are totally unhelpful

  • @wodoonky The problem is related to the quicktime decoder from apple. It is not compatible with the mov/mp4 video files produced by many non apple products. Newer versions of quicktime are worse, the older versions work better. Since so many cheap cameras save in non compatible mp4/mov formats, I get a lot of questions about this. Not much I can do about it. I don't work for Apple or Sony.

  • Hey, I had this problem just now, but the videos that were turned offline are now unable to be played on their regular media players, or on Vegas. Whats wrong? Their files aren't converted. All my other video files have a thumbnail of their content, but the affected files are now just Real Player logos, which is my media player program.

  • @wodoonky If the files no longer play, it is likely you accepted the quicktime update that apple pushed out yesterday. That update changed the quicktime codec (aka real media) on your computer, and the quicktime updates are not always compatible with older versions of quicktime, mov, mp4 video files. To resolve this, uninstall quicktime from your computer, and download and install an older version of Quicktime. Version 7.3.1.170 usually works well.

  • Thank you very much!

  • Thanx Allot Man You Helped Me Alot Hey Guyz Maximum Thumbs For This Video ..!!!

  • i have got another problem I made a video.. and I save the project..when I want to open it , it doesn't work :(

can u help me somehow ?!

    please :(

  • @issorrisi If you want to see the video you made, use 'render as' to render the project into a video file.

  • Thank you

  • Thank you very mutch

  • Thank you very mutch!

  • Hey thanks a lot, this vid really helped me out!!! Now my problem is that the media generator tab disappeared, how do I get it to show again ? By the way, thanks for posting this vid. It helped with my prior issue, when I had a .gif and it said ( Media Offline ) so thankyou! Hope you can help me with my current issue ^.^

  • @xAwakeTheDeadx Press Alt 9 to bring the media generator tab back on screen.

  • I still cant find my files

  • @Fluegame23 If you have moved your files, that could be the reason they show offline. Or if the files are mp4/mov and you have recently updated quicktime or itunes on your computer, that could be what's causing the files to show as offline.

  • @guerillabill hi guerillabill , I have the problem what you have said first . namely that i have moved my files to a another ordner and so they show offline. can you help me please how I can to fix the problem??! & if you could help me I would be really happy.. thank you!

greetings from germany (sorry for this english).

  • @MissStylerin300 If you have removed the files, you can use the 'let movie studio find missing files', or you can put them back where they were when you closed the project.

  • I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9 (bought, not a trial) and I if I create a new project and try applying a video clip the only thing that comes up is the audio. If I try to open an older project it says "Media Offline". I tried what you showed here but it was already not clicked. The thing is that I have used this programme for a while and have never had this problem before?

  • @ScandinavianQueen The problem is most likely to accepting the latest quicktime update that apple and itunes recently pushed out. Since Vegas uses the quicktime codec to edit mp4/mov files, and since the latest version of quicktime is not compatible with many (most) non apple mov/mp4 formats, you'll often see problems like you are describing. To resolve uninstall quicktime, then install 7.3.1.170

  • @guerillabill what is 7.3.1.170 ?

  • @ScandinavianQueen An older version of Quicktime. Quicktime 7.3.1.170. Seems to be more compatible with mov/mp4 files than newer versions of quicktime.

  • @guerillabill I can't seem to find it, do you have a web site you can recommand?

  • @ScandinavianQueen You can find it at oldversion com/QuickTime.html

  • @guerillabill I have now downloaded Quicktime, and it is the same. Is there anything I should do with the Quicktime?

  • @ScandinavianQueen As you are finding out, quicktime isn't very compatible with all mp4/mov files. I usually avoid the problem and convert quicktime files to avi using Neoscene cineform.

  • Thanks Bill. Fixed my issue perfectly.

  • Hi Bill. Thanks for the videos.

I left a message in another of your videos. As you can see in this video you have up, the audio timeline shows purple peaks etc, but when I import video I have no audio peaks are shown- there is just a white 'block-out' superimposed on them. I'm importing quicktime files. Is thius normal or a separate problem from normal quicktime/mov vegas problems? Thanks for the help.

  • @ShiineEnterprise Quicktime files create a lot of problems when editing. The reason is the quicktime codec from apple is not always (in fact rarely) compatible with older mp4/mov files. When that happens, the solution is to uninstall the current version of quicktime on your computer, and find and install an older version of Quicktime. For example, quicktime 7.3.1.170 seems to work with most older mp4/mov files.

  • i dont understand what is wrong with mine. i thought it was offline but i did this and nothing worked. when im editing, the clip that im using is blank white insted of being able to see the media on the clip as i edit. this is so fustrating and im not sure what to do! can you help please?

  • @bumblebabe999 Could be the clip is mp4/mov and the version of Quicktime you have on your computer no longer supports the codec requied to edit that clip. This is very common, especially with people who have itunes on their computer and who accept the quicktime updates from apple. No real solution except to try to convert the file into a newer supported format.

  • Thank you so much!!

  • Thank you soo much!!

  • OMFG TY BCH :d

  • The media offline still pops up on my audio. When I click on it to play it, it will no longer play. What do I do? Please respond back. I don't want to exit out of my video and not be able to open it again.

  • @FanofBewitched If you have the audio opened in another program that could be the problem. Or if you have downloaded the latest version of itunes or Quicktime, it might not be compatible with the audio file.

  • @guerillabill Thank you. Now if I shut it will I be able to open my video up again? This happened this morning and I couldn't open it. A box came up that said it couldn't find it. So I had to redo the whole video.

  • @FanofBewitched If the video is saved on your computer, and you don't move the file, Sony Movie Studio will be able to find it when you re-open the project. Just be sure to save the project, and don't move the video files used in the project.

  • @guerillabill Okay. Thanks for the help:)

  • my problem is that i cant see the audio's waveform!

i was having the media offline problem but solving it didn't also solve the waveform problem

  • @PeleGiannisGalpe If it is a mp4/mov file, it is a problem with the quicktime codec and non standard mov/mp4 file formats.

  • @guerillabill well no matter what file the waveform doesn't appears..Either it's a track or a video

  • @guerillabill I have a mov file and having a similar problem, what do i need to do with the codec in order to resolve the problem?

  • @CimonProductions The best solution is to not use mov files - simply because the quicktime codec from Apple is not compatible with all (or most) mov/.mp4 video files. You can try using an older version of quicktime - ie 7.03. Or use Cineform NeoScene to convert mov to avi.

  • Thank you!

  • thanks help alot :)

  • Thanks ! and tip to everyone, if u move your video after it has been imported to vegas, it will not be able to find the clip because you have moved it

  • Hey. When Im trying to edit in Vegas 9 when I open A game clip recorded fro A Haupagge HD PVR Its really zoomed in. Any help or advice cause Im stumped. Thanks

  • thank you, i tought is was broken

  • thank you very much friend served me a lot since Argentina is appreciated ....

  • thank you!! :D but what a stupid option it is?

  • @DainiuZMania Well it helps with slow computers that cant handle too many things at once. I agree though.

  • @DainiuZMania agreed to the max, :D haha

  • I thought this would solve my problem but it hasnt. It isn't that I'm opening programs and it keeps going offline. Its that any recordings that Ive recorded with Camtasia Recorder (which are avi), are showing up as offline when i try to put them in the Trimmer and the video tracks. Help?

  • @Marktonikkle I record with Camtasia and put the avis on my timeline without problem. In your case, you may need to install the Camtasia TSCC codec on your computer. That's the codec Camtasia uses to create avi files. It's a free download from the Camtasia web site.

  • @guerillabill I installed the Codec as u said, find it on the Camtasia web site and installed it, now what do i do? I still get the Media Offline problem, I even tried using a new recording, recorded with the Camtaisia Recoreder, after i installed the Codec

  • @Marktonikkle Be sure to close camtasia. Reboot your computer after installing the codec.

  • thank you so much ily

  • I LOVE YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks !

  • my entire screen goes black even though I've done what you recommended in your video. What shall I do? it is not a trial version I bought it hope you'll help :)

  • @ScandinavianQueen Video going black usually means the video is either mp4/mov or a mp4/mov with an avi extension.

The problem is the quicktime decoder needed to edit mp4/mov video isn't compatible with all varieties of mp4/mov, and when you bring a non compatible version into any video editing program, the video will be black.

You can try downloading a different version of quicktime - this sometimes solves the problem.

  • @guerillabill I downloaded quicktime player but I dont know what to do from here. The videoclips still goes BLANK (not black, sorry) ??

  • @ScandinavianQueen That's the problem with mp4/mov files, and the reason I try to avoid them. Check with the manufacturer of the device that recorded the files to see if they offer a codec or converter.

  • @guerillabill I did what you said in the video but my Sony Vegas still renders my Video as a .avi file (for example) and If I open it, It's just like a .mp3 file basically only music. My video has a text, pictures, little bit editting and music, But when I want to render it as a Video file it doesn't show the pictures basically :( Please help me I really spend so much time on this video I really wanna fix this stupid problem, basically the video just becomes a music-file while it has picture's.

  • @RSKorosiya The problem is with the codec used by your source video. Until you resolve that problem it will continue to be blank when you use 'render as'.

You might try downloading a trial version of Cineform from Neoscene to see if it can convert your source videos to true avi.

  • @guerillabill So basically I need to download a codec pack?

    Thanks for replying so fast!!

  • @RSKorosiya No, you don't need a codec pack. You need to find out what codec your source video that is giving the problem requires. Use the free gspot appliance to check the codec. Google gspot appliance to find and download it.

Also check with the manufacturer of the device used to record the video to see if they offer conversion software.

  • thanks you i will try this:)

  • you are a total god send!!!!!!

  • I can't find an older version of quicktime, I can only download the most recent one....

  • @chuckie91NL check oldversion com

  • HAHAHA, Seriously! YOU SAVED MY DAY! "Balls to you" :)

  • the video is still not playing

  • @pokemonmaniacSLR If the video doesn't play, it almost always is a mp4/mov video, and you've downloaded a recent quicktime or itunes update that has overwritten the mov/mp4 decoder with one that isn't compatible with your videos.

You can often resolve this by unistalling quicktime, then downloading and installing quicktime 7.06, which is more compatible with more formats of mov/mp4.

Also, many avi files are actually mov/mp4 files in avi wrappers - they have the same problem as above.

  • @guerillabill no its just on one video the rest off my files and videos are fine i thought it was an offline problam it was working fine a few days ago

its thier but all im seeing is a black screen with my audio playin in SV and no clip playing, i think i need to browse for them again but i dont know how to do it manualy and the box doesnt show up for me to browse them---it is only for one video file

  • @pokemonmaniacSLR If the file was working a few days ago but doesn't work now, it sounds like you accepted the latest quicktime update (or itunes) that was pushed out by apple last week. That update makes some mov/mp4/avi files no longer compatible with video editing programs.

  • U are GOD! Thank's you!!!

  • You fixed my problem Bill...thanks!!!

  • Hi, I have a big problem with Vegas at the moment. For a certain movie I'm trying to edit, all the clips have suddenly gone blank and say "media offline" all the time. The audio plays in the trimmer, but the picture never shows there or in on the video track. This just suddenly happened one day when I opened the project and they were like that. This was about 2 months ago. The clips aren't in a format that Vegas can't handle, I'd been editing them for months before this.

  • @neravairathethird If you recently accepted the itunes or quicktime update from apple (like the one that apple released yesterday), that will be the problem. The latest quicktime is not very backward compatible, and mov/mp4.avi files that worked in the past, may not work with the new version.

To test, uninstall the quicktime on your computer, and then download and install quicktime 7.6.

  • @guerillabill Hmm I think I did. Thank you, I will try that!

  • @guerillabill Arghh I just checked the program and I do have the 7.6 version already :(

  • @neravairathethird If you didn't first fully uninstall all versions of quicktime from your computer, the new codecs will still be there - even if you install 7.6 over the new version.

You have to do a full uninstall of quicktime, then reinstall quicktime 7.6, and then turn off automatic quicktime updates.

  • @guerillabill Thanks so much! You saved us from a lot of frustration!

  • My videos are coming up red and not editable.

I've tried using a converter to switch from AVI to WMV, but no luck. It's from a Nikon D90. I have Sony Movie Studio Platnium 9.

  • @ilubshocking Video from the Nikon d90 is motion jpeg with an avi file extension. This means the video is really a form of mov or mp4.

When Vegas tries to edit it using the avi codec, it doesn't work because the file is not true avi.

Trying uninstalling quicktime from your comptuer, and then installing quicktime 7.6, which is more compatible with some mov/mp4 files in avi wrappers.

  • @guerillabill I don't have any quicktime on my computer. How will this allow me to see them in Vegas better? They will work on my computer, but if I try to play them it comes up as a red bar, says Media Offline, or just shows the audio.

  • @ilubshocking The files from the Nikon D90 are motion jpeg and require quicktime to decode. download and install quicktime 7.6.

  • @guerillabill Thank you sosososos much for your help :O)

  • Do you know how I can fix the problem of my clips going black and audio only? They're .avi and h264 codec. And i have dowloaded the required codecs and I also uninstalled the new quicktime & replaced it by the 7.5 but it still won't work.

And it's not that the clips never work, but sometimes random clips just go black and have only audio while I'm editing.

I would appreciate it very much if you could help me!

    Thanks in advance!

  • @xXZachiiXx Avi with the h264 codec is not true avi, but mp4. When Vegas uses the avi codec to try to display the video, it doesn't work. Try removing quicktime from your computer, and then installing quicktime 7.6, which is more compatible with strange h264 files.

  • THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Help me! My clips still aren't working :( does this mean i have to rerip them??

  • @DisneyLizzie If clips don't appear it might mean you are using mp4/mov video clips, and have a newer version of itunes, that overwrites the required quicktime codec needed to view and edit mp4/mov videos.

If that is the case, either convert the clips to avi, or uninstall quicktime, and then install quicktime 7.6.

  • @guerillabill all my clips are avi and i don't use quicktime

  • @DisneyLizzie Some clips that have an avi extension are not really avi. They will be divx or xvid in avi wrappers. This is common with clips downloaded from the web.

You might want to use gspot codec detector (free, find it with google search) to check your avi clips to see what they really are.

  • in sony vegas 7.0, with some of my clips, they go green. which means i can't see or edit them so its useless

  • @GamingOnlineHD Vegas 7 is 5 years old, and the video codecs for mp4 and mov have been updated since then by Apple, and unless you update the codecs on your computer or update to a newer version of Vegas, some videos won't be editable.

Vegas Movie Studio 10 Platinum is a good upgrade - cost under $60 at Amazon

  • WOw... my video is still offline theres no way i can restart this. HELP!

  • @mtvprankes If your video clips are mp4 or mov, and if you have have downloaded an itunes update, the itunes update overwrites the mp4 / mov video codec, which can cause your older mp4/mov files to no longer be compatible with the new codec from itunes.

You can resolve this by applying the fix from Sony as shown in my YouTube video 'Fix mp4 / mov problems in Sony Vegas Movie Studio '

  • @S4eXeD The video recording settings in fraps is likely the problem.

  • @guerillabill Does that make sense though? If I start a new project with said files, they'll work again =/

  • @S4eXeD In that case, some other program might be opening the files without you knowing about it. That would cause the media offline to show.

  • The media offline problem happens to me even if I'm only working with Sony Vegas... Will this fix it too?

  • @S4eXeD If you are editing mov/mp4 video files, they will show media offline if the wrong mov/mp4 video codec is on your computer. This can happen if you also have itunes on your computer.

You might be able to solve this problem by installing the mp4/mov patch available from Sony. See my YouTbe video 'Fix mp4 / mov problems in Sony Vegas Movie Studio'

  • Can I ask a question? How come when I play the video in Sony Vegas, everything seems ok. When I render it, only the pictures can be seen and audio can be heard. The clips aren't visible. So I tried rendering the video again, but still, it was the same as the first one I rendered. I got frustrated, and now I'm wondering how to fix this. Also, I saw it said Media Offline on my clips...

  • @Hannbea Your clips are probably mp4 or mov, and your computer may not have the correct video codec to edit and render those types of files. This is often true when you also have itunes on your computer, because itunes over-writes the correct video mp4/mov codec.

You might be able to solve this problem by installing the mp4/mov patch available from Sony. See my YouTbe video 'Fix mp4 / mov problems in Sony Vegas Movie Studio'

  • <3 U

  • Thank you kind sir!

  • I need help. When i try to crop vegas pro 9 it says work offline and I did what this video told me and the sign went off but it still won't let me crop. what should i do.

  • @mulakai1532studios If the media shows offline when you try to view or apply effects, it usually means you are either editing mov/mp4 video and don't have the required codec installed on your computer, or you are trying to work with a divx or xvid highly compressed video file - which is too compressed to edit or add effects to.

Try using higher quality source video - or use neoscene cineform to convert the video you are working with to avi.

  • @guerillabill Thank you but i solved the problem. the crop window was hiding where the bottom tool bar was so i moved it and sure enough there it was. Still thanks for your help ,you solved my other problem i was going to ask you.

  • When I drag Avi into Sony Vegas there was a pop up telling me to download Quick Time player, now that I have the audio shows up but the video is black and says "media offline" Help please.

  • @OHWOWITZKAMMY If the avi causes a quicktime popup, it means the avi is really a quicktime (mov or mpeg4) video in a avi wrapper. That means only the extension is avi, the video is not.

Sony Vegas would need the codec used to create the orginal file in order to edit it.

Generally, files in avi wrappers use proprietary codecs that must be downloaded from whatever device created the file

  • @OHWOWITZKAMMY the problem could also be that you have Quicktime 7.6.6; downgrade to 7.6.5 or 7.6.4 :\

  • For people trying to import old captured footage from FRAPS reinstall FRAPS on the editing PC to acquire the proper codecs to edit the video.

  • My Sony Vegas says Media Offline when I bring videos to Trimmer. Now it shows only files that are .wmv but earlier it showed also .avi videos. What can I do to solve this problem?

  • @sotahuuto Your avi files are most likely mp4, mov, or divx files in a avi wrapper.

Those files are typically from digital photos cameras, phones, video games, and some flip cameras.

To edit those, you will need to install the codec used by the source device to compress the video files.

They show as media offline, because the codec is not on your computer.

  • I have a question. When I try to open up one of my clips in Sony Vegas it only gives me audio but no video. It frustrating me to no end and I don't know how to solve this problem. Or if I try to open it up in the Trimmer it says "No Peaks Available" in the audio section and "media offline" in the video section and its all pure black. If you could help that would help me out a lot.

    Thanks

    Elika

  • @OfficialElika Files that show audio but no video are usually mp4 or mov files, and they don't display properly because the Apple itunes mp4, mov codec has been changed and the codec in Vegas no longer works. If you have Movie Studio 9, Sony has a patch to resolve the problem. See where to find and install it in my YouTube video ' Fix mp4 audio problems in Sony Vegas Movie Studio'

  • @guerillabill I was just missing a codec :P all fixed thank you! :D

  • thanks dude.

  • Thank you so much

  • I unchecked it, and it's still the same. The media isn't offline when I put it in, but when I reverse it, it goes offline.

  • @Chris10237 This can happen when your source video is highly compressed - ie divx or xvid footage, or when using .mov files that don't have the correct codec.

If the video file is highly compressed, it won't have enough frame info left to apply effects, and it will show as offline.

divx and xvid files are typically produced by photo cameras, flip cameras, some video games, downloaded files, and analog capture devices.

  • woww thanks Mann its ok!!!

  • I did the doloawd vegaspro90e_64bit is the same?

only he does not want to install, just run window appears and then nothing, does not open anything: x

  • @prorobotic The 64 bit is not the same as the 32 bit. If you have Sony Vegas Pro 9 32 bit, use the 32 bit update. If you have the 64 bit version, use the 64 bit update.

  • I have sony vegas 9.0, and spent a video from my PC to sony vegas, so that when I pass this video it is all black and no sound (at least for now), told me that if I download the program xp solve codec pack, so you do not know how to use this program. how?

I went through the video I shot with my camera is a Kodak Z981

    Thanks!

  • @prorobotic If you have Vegas Pro 9, download and install the Vegas Pro 9.0e update. That will solve the problem.

If you have Movie Studio 9, ee my YouTube video, 'Fix mp4 audio problems in Sony Vegas Movie Studio ' . Apply the Sony Patch as shown in that video might solve the problem.

  • My videos are blank while the audio still plays. Any ideas pleasE? lol..

  • @jaketubedeja If your video is mp4 or mov, the problem is the updated codec from iTunes isn't compatible with older versions of Movie Studio. Sony has a patch available. See my YouTube video, 'Fix mp4 audio problems in Sony Vegas Movie Studio '.

If the video is not mp4 or mov, it probably is encoded with divx or xvid, and you need to install the video codec for the device that recorded the video.

  • Wow, this helped tons! Anyway, I have a problem. I have a .avi file and only the sound works but the video is white... help?

  • @UrbanTwitch If you only hear the sound on an avi file, it is most likely a divx or xvid file in a avi wrapper. This mean is isn't really avi, and you'll need to discover what format the video is, and find the codec required to edit it.

  • Wow, thanks. You literally cut my editing time in half if not more and took out one of the most frustrating parts of vegas for me.

Now i just need to figure out what the "unknown error" is that comes up when i try to render my video.

  • @matticus12345 The unknown error is probably related to the property settings of the video. If HD, set the property to 720p, and try rendering to WMV using the default template

  • thanks Bill, however, i encounter different problem, i tried to import a video clip in quicktime format on my Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 but when i drag the clip into the timeline, it is only black and no video at all. can you please help me on this Sir? Thanks

  • @citizen27641 The quicktime (mov) video codec has changed, and if you have downloaded it from itunes, your quicktime movies may no longer be editable in Vegas Pro 8.

This is resolved in Vegas Pro 9.0e update, as well as in Sony Movie Studio HD 10.

Sony has a codec update on its site, but it appears to only work with Movie Studio 9.

  • Wow, vegas wont even let me do this, i click on quickfae audio edits it wont go to anything, also i have not been able to import anything , flip videos, and things from detanationfilms, com, all it says is that an error occured and that the file does not exist! i have been on youtube for the past 3 hours and on google trying to figure out what is wrong does anyone know?

  • @chilakyle218 1. for mov and mp4 files, you'll need to download the free quicktime player from apple. 2. Since apple changed the mov and mp4 codec, you'll need to load the patch from Sony. Find it at 'Fix mp4 audio problems in Sony Vegas Movie Studio '

    3. If you have Vegas pro, just apply the latest update.
