I saw him in Leicester in 1998. It is still the best standup show I've ever seen.
It was before he became famous, and no one in the audience had any idea who the hell he was. He was onstage for over 2 hours - literally sent people running scared out of the theatre. This huge drunk man covered in beer and clay stalking the audience screaming "Love me! Love me!"
frickin' great :) still so many people that go see him or have him presented to them unexpectedly (like on this show) just get a bit scared and confused- great act!
I seen JV on tv a few times and hated him..what a twat...stupid fucking monkey adverts...didn't even realise he did stand up...Just watched this and am stunned. His timing..his control over the mood of the room..thats mad skillz right there. Can't remember the last time I misjudged someones talent so much
Stewart lee's book brought me here looking for some old JV shows and i can see how he inspired Stewart in certain areas. I love this side of comedy. The bewildered faces of those celebrities, mixed with the music and the way the crowd got behind him at the end. Any act after that must have seemed boring as hell.
@bugstrut try reading stewart lee's book mate. Stew says that he didnt find his own voice until 2002 ish. When Stew does his breakdown routines he says he credits a lot of it down to Johnny Vegas, as he used to tour with him, and says that he took a lot from his act and loved how Vegas' act was art. They're good friends in real life too.
So yes, Stew, stew from Lee and Herring. That Stew yes.
@12345l6789 The whole wandering through the crowd 'breakdown' thing that Stew does now is definitely influenced to some degree by Johnny. The shattering of the image of the confident professional, revealing this desperately broken man is just fucking brilliant. Strips away every bit of status or respect the person on stage has been given by the audience. This is just epic but you have to know where he's coming from. If people are expecting normal stand up then it's no surprise they don't like it.
@MrHennessy30 This is the first time I saw this ,he did a ver similar piece on an award show which seems melodramatic but it is a very clever worked out piece of comedy some people dont get him because they are dumb,he is a very clever comedian
not good as a stand up did some1 just say?.... did we watch the same video? he just went in a stranger, in another country, completely messed with everyones heads then had them cheering at the end. drama, pathos, audience revulsion then audience full on eruption of support and appreciation. in 6 minutes.... what would be a good stand up?? this is the real johnny vegas. this was so so good

Johhny vegas isnt really that funny as a stand up comedian tbh :( He's good on panel shows and stuff, but on his own, he struggles, which is a shame, as I really like his joke delivery :)
@reflex1reflex1 To all you idiots who think Vegas isn't funny, you're watching the wrong act. You just don't understand the show, so don't act all uppity, shitheads.

awesome- i love that he stays in character so unrelentlessly and kinda confuses and scares half the people in a venue haha... anyone who hasnt got it, go buy 'are you ready for ice cream?' dvd- dark, sad, but brilliant and funny comedy and faux-documentary
@groove1971 hmm i doubt it - a pseud at best - i dread every time he's on Qi; he just brings it down with stupid unfunny bs.. ohh i'm a northern child from a poor working class un-educated anti- intellectual background & i can't stop talking.. heart attack soon please Jonny vauge arse : (
he gets pissed really but its also apart of his act like he over emphasises it. sayin that, when hes sober he just goes on mad rants, hes funny as fuck!
