I love this movie. Everything about it, I love! The romance here is super erotic, intense, deeply passionate. Now that is exciting to experience. The piano involved in here, along with her mysterious, eccentric ways and of her being mute causes the drama; exciting ones and very tense ones. The movie sexually strong; I like that a lot of course.

This is more Gothic. Gothic romances were set in the Victorian era and were dark, usually with men with a mysterious past, women who were stronger than their typical counterpart, and included romance. It has nothing to do with today's 'goth' culture or dark clothing. Victoria Holt wrote gothic romance. Bronte wrote gothic.

@channover, I would call this film "gothic" rather than romantic (though yes, it is about love relationships). If you like this story, you would probably also like the book Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

Can anyone tell me why Sam Neill's character, Alistair Stewart, was so upset with Flora for playing with the native children and hugging trees? He made her wash the tree trunks. I didn't understand that scene.

Mainly because The Piano is set in a very old fashioned rigid society and the kids weren't hugging tree trunks, they were simulating sex with them - Flora had seen Ada and Baines. Because sex was tabboo in this era, Stewart was upset and embarassed and therefore punished her by making her wash the tree trunks.

Yes it was the Victorian era and proper young ladies didn't do such things back then. I'm surprised that Alistair didn't just assume Flora was acting like that because she was playing with the "unrefined" native children, and jumped to the conclusion of a possible liason between Ada & Baines at that point in the film.
