I love this movie. Everything about it, I love! The romance here is super erotic, intense, deeply passionate. Now that is exciting to experience. The piano involved in here, along with her mysterious, eccentric ways and of her being mute causes the drama; exciting ones and very tense ones. The movie sexually strong; I like that a lot of course.
I agree with EyeLean5280: the plot of this movie is in the Gothic genre, for which the earliest influence is the Greek Tragedy. Read the Wikipedia article; the plot isn't entirely original.
This is more Gothic. Gothic romances were set in the Victorian era and were dark, usually with men with a mysterious past, women who were stronger than their typical counterpart, and included romance. It has nothing to do with today's 'goth' culture or dark clothing. Victoria Holt wrote gothic romance. Bronte wrote gothic.
if you love this, you MUST watch the video of "Let There Be Light "!!... it's a song by rock noir band BELLADONNA and MICHAEL NYMAN and it's based on this music from "The Piano". Michael Nyman himself plays piano on it... search for "belladonna nyman" here on youtube and you'll find it!! :-)
@sensualgun I have seen the video you mention but it didnt rock my boat. Maybe because I am 47 years old and my taste is more traditional. That said, Belladonna has a nice voice :)
@channover, I would call this film "gothic" rather than romantic (though yes, it is about love relationships). If you like this story, you would probably also like the book Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.
@EyeLean5280 Gothic?! it takes place during 'victorian times'...(look at the clothing, hairstyle, etc) and there's nothing Gothic about it, unless you think the New Zealand landscape (prior to all the immigrants settling there) is Gothic to you?! BTW, wearing black doesn't necessarily make anything Gothic...
There are several valid reasons to refer to "The Piano" as "Gothic."
"Gothic" is, among other things, a literary and cinematic term for certain types of stories, told in particular ways. Some examples include "Wuthering Heights," "Jane Eyre" and the writings of Edgar Allen Poe. The style is still quite popular and "The Piano" falls into the Gothic genre...
@EyeLean5280 No Kidding?!...and I still say that the Piano is not in the gothic style----period! I too was an English Literature Major who graduated with honors...but thank you for your opinion, which we're all free to have! Peace!
@EmmaRose473 - well, given your background, your remarks are surprising. You come off sounding like a cocky 14 year old who doesn't have the slightest idea what he's talking about.
@EyeLean5280 First of all I'm a 'she'...second of all, and this should end of conversation, at least from my end----IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO WIN AN ARGUMENT WITH AN IGNORANT PERSON----bye...
@EmmaRose473 Dont you think you are over reacting. Dont take what others say as a direct attck against you. We are all different and this place can be a killing field for those ready to take up the challenge :)
this is like the only version that has the piu mosso, as the heart asks for pleasure first actually should have. but it just lasts for the last 2 seconds of this vid xD
I heard of this movie by searching piano on youtube : D It sounds great, even if I'm a bit young to watch it, like a lot of others I watch them anyways
I never saw this film. But the soundtrack was used as a song in one of the Lloyds TSB adverts in UK.
Today, while having Tea at the Dorchester Hotel in London, I heard this song, and I quickly jumped to the chance to find out what its called, after searching for it for the last year.
The Song mingles Innocence with Freedom... I think I better see the film now :)))
Can anyone tell me why Sam Neill's character, Alistair Stewart, was so upset with Flora for playing with the native children and hugging trees? He made her wash the tree trunks. I didn't understand that scene.
Mainly because The Piano is set in a very old fashioned rigid society and the kids weren't hugging tree trunks, they were simulating sex with them - Flora had seen Ada and Baines. Because sex was tabboo in this era, Stewart was upset and embarassed and therefore punished her by making her wash the tree trunks.
Yes it was the Victorian era and proper young ladies didn't do such things back then. I'm surprised that Alistair didn't just assume Flora was acting like that because she was playing with the "unrefined" native children, and jumped to the conclusion of a possible liason between Ada & Baines at that point in the film.
I don't think sad is the word I would use... the lovers do get to spend the rest of their lives together. It's a poigniant film, but ultimately a happy ending.
2:36 - this has got to be the most beautiful and effective use of a moving-pan shot. her face, while getting a muddled view of the surroundings. combined with the music - its basically a perfect shot

Can anyone tell me why Sam Neill's character, Alistair Stewart, was so upset with Flora for playing with the native children and hugging trees? He made her wash the tree trunks. I didn't understand that scene.
stillwaterguy04 3 years ago
Mainly because The Piano is set in a very old fashioned rigid society and the kids weren't hugging tree trunks, they were simulating sex with them - Flora had seen Ada and Baines. Because sex was tabboo in this era, Stewart was upset and embarassed and therefore punished her by making her wash the tree trunks.

Yes it was the Victorian era and proper young ladies didn't do such things back then.
