The speaker is trying to say that the way women are shown in media, has a negative impact on our society, and our women especially. And to expand on that, what about sports like football, boxing, wrestling and MMA? The men who engage in these sports typically end up messing their bodies and heads up to such an extent that often their quality of life deteriorates more rapidly then the average person and even often shortening their life span. You don't hear these stories much. But I think these masculine depictions are just as dangerous for men.

The only reason that the objectification of women is so prevalent is that women like to be objectified and victimized; if they didn't, they wouldn't buy the products and therefore the advertising campaigns would shift focus to something that WOULD make them buy the products.

I'm a Graphic Design student and we have this subject called "Consumer's Psychology", you really have no idea how true this is, they basically teach us how to manipulate people's subconscious. Even the position of the models in the ad mean something, your mind relates every detail with something. There are lots of hidden messages in every ad, we analized many of them and studied them and it's scary how much they influence in us.

It is highly unlikely for a woman to lie about being raped or abused; being abused/raped is a source of shame and stigma.

The speaker is trying to say that the way women are shown in media, has a negative impact on our society, and our women especially. @Greensery you know 98% of these adds are geared toward women, right? And a lot of girls objectify themselves looking up to Kim Kardashian and Snookie. It's really sad. They should look up to respectable female role models like Jean Kilbourne. She sees what society does to woman and she doesn't blame men for it. I have a lot of respect for her.

@bubilouextravaganza The problem is that men aren't told how important it is to keep a healthy weight, not that women are. Anyone who needs surgery, diet pills or laxatives to get rid of fat is weak. Just don't eat more calories than you burn, it ain't any harder than that. People who don't train any sports shouldn't eat a lot either, simple as that. One shouldn't eat just because the food tastes good, you know.

We sell products and advertise the way we do because it fuels our economy - fundamentally empowering our government and military - which in turn allows these feminists to vote, have free speech, and make lame documentaries that nobody really cares about or does anything after watching it. People of normal reasoning and intelligence should be able to see beyond what the media tells us.
Such is the way of our capitalist society. Go back to the kitchen you feminists.

And to expand on that, what about sports like football, boxing, wrestling and MMA? The men who engage in these sports typically end up messing their bodies and heads up to such an extent that often their quality of life deteriorates more rapidly then the average person and even often shortening their life span. You don't hear these stories much. But I think these masculine depictions are just as dangerous for men.

Perhaps men don't see the affect it has on them the way women do. What about men being told violence solves their problems? Does this cause men to kill each other over trivial things like pride?

I really just want to watch all 4 parts of this documentary in its entirety but I can't seem to find it anywhere!!! I would even pay for them but the only places I can find that sells them charge about a hundred bucks for one part because they cater to school libraries and such. Wow. This reminds me of all my classes where we had to use a single data set to prove and disprove something using statistics and that data set. what she says has a toe in reality, the rest is simple fancy tap dancing to get us emotionally involved. Worrying about being perfect /=/ being perfect. For example, some women try to starve themselves, but when they are done they overeat - gaining instead of losing. Some people are also predisposed to getting fat. Not saying that obesity isn't a problem, just saying that it's not that women aren't trying hard enough.

They don't have the means to change what makes them less than ideal (aka money to get plastic surgery). food becomes comfort and an escape. that's my understanding. to say they are not worried about how they look is prejudiced. ask some obese women if they care what they look like and then come back. that's my advise. take it or leave it.

The only reason that the objectification of women is so prevalent is that women like to be objectified and victimized; if they didn't, they wouldn't buy the products and therefore the advertising campaigns would shift focus to something that WOULD make them buy the products.
The only solution is to stop buying things from the creators of sexist advertisements. Complaining about them won't do a lick of good, because the only thing that creates change in this world is money.

Couldn't agree more with what she says about the American belief that someone can achieve unlikely or impossible things--physical perfection, wealth, etc--if they just try hard enough, and that failure to achieve things things is only the result of a lack of effort. Reminds me of the crazy faith preachers I sat under in too many church services, who preached that wealth or perfect health came from having proper faith. I'll never forget the day in grade 9 when a guy in my math class had the nerve to try and reach up my skirt (knee length for your information, not even short), as I walked past his desk .I slapped him for it and the teacher gave me trouble for it, saying, and I quote "Boys will be boys, nothing will change it, but that kind of violence is unacceptable in a girl. Apologize." When was this you ask? 6 years ago. I'm surprised I didn't slap the teacher too.

I'm a Graphic Design student and we have this subject called "Consumer's Psychology", you really have no idea how true this is, they basically teach us how to manipulate people's subconscious. Even the position of the models in the ad mean something, your mind relates every detail with something. There are lots of hidden messages in every ad, we analized many of them and studied them and it's scary how much they influence in us.

Every culture has instances of women in extreme competition for beauty. Advertising or "society" is not at fault. Women's desire to be beautiful and reap the rewards of that power is at fault. In very primitive cultures women file their teet down into daggers because it is beautiful. Some put rings around their neck to stretch their neck and make it long. None of these cultures even have a TV let alone "advertising". Own responsibility for you own choices instead of blaming everyone else.

I have never in my life felt bad in any way because of perfect models in advertising, I have however felt shame because of stupid women turning their sex into a big deal. You think men don't have problems?
As for the matter of turning women into objects, has it ever occurred to them that the perfume bottle is a work of art of some sort? That torso is beautiful and that is the only reason why it's form was transformed into a bottle.

Oh.. I actually never realised- we live in 50s like.. Someone is missing the odlfashionable image of woman, as a object, so much that they dare to impose it on them even nowsdays. I didn´t know- as I work more with minorities and so on- and I see huge uprise of power and selfconfidence there- it is surprising to me (I don´t have a TV), that woman in 21st century shoul be suscitable to such a rubbish..
