Tam, Your videos are great for a wannabe cook. I do okay, but it is easier when you see someone doing the deed. Thanks for all you and your hubby? do trying to teach us more about the wild places and how to relax and live there........Ross
@grizzly22485 Ross, it's precious people like you who are so encouraging that make every moment sharing worth it. I tend to forget taking the camera with me as we live so simply and enjoy life so much here. I need to remember more to record and share more. I've fallen behind in video's! Thanks for the encouragement, I'll try get more out there.
@ahkinzero If you are using instant rice you purchased, follow the directions on the box. I made my own dehydrated rice, I used 2 1/2 cups boiling water and 2 cups rice.
Hey Tam, that looks pretty good. By the way, have you considered adding Duck Jerkey to that? Sounds like you have plenty to go around in the background.
Tam, My mouth waters everytime I see this video, guess that means it gets better and better, sure makes me hungry. Would love to have some homemade jerky too, cook some extra and send it my way, Ah shucks, now I got to go cook something up! Thanks Tam, later Andy
Thanks so much for the idea about rice. I was able to make some great soup mixes using dehydrated rice, chicken, spices, and vegetables. Ya'll are the BEST!!! Blessings
hey tam have you guys ever used that dehydrator to make jerky because im about to try and i have a dehydrator just like yours that we bought it from walmart
@Davidvarlamov I sure have! Made several batches of deer jerky (no not the deer that were raised here, a gift from a friend) Let me know if you need help with a good recipe :)
I love guyot designs, the owners are super nice, and if there is any problems with their products what so ever they hande it personally!! As a matter of fact both of the owners wear my paracord survival bracelets!! Thanks for this new recipe Tam, I am definately going to try it out, next weekend when I review another TOPS knife!
Anybody trying this, be sure to do it the first time while near medical help. I'm not allergic to dock, but I know someone who is. If you try it before, you'll know if it's safe for you. By the way, that person I know is the only one I've ever heard of that had a reaction. Always test ANY food before using it in the bush...
Oops, sorry Tam. I meant to tell you it was a great video in the last post. I love the idea of taking a hot meal while hiking instead of just trail mix. 5/5
@SassafrasHomestead Great advice :) I've heard of pollen allergies but this is a first to hear about eating greens. Always good to know, and no one should eat ANY plant without being able to positively ID them. This recipe works with garden greens fresh or store bought too. Greens are great :)
there so-called "SAS Windshirts" on the marktet, which really add to this concept. Basically they are pull-over shirts made from siliconized nylon, sometimes with taped seams. They have no pockets or liner and fit into a trousers pocket. They are water resistant and totally windproof. Those as a base (outer) layer are incredible. You might get them new for around 20 bucks.
Looks good to me, I have dehydrated loads of rice in my dehydrator! Cooks quick and still has -the starches one needs while out in the bush. I have a few other recipes for Jerky Stew, and soup.but this looks great, as always this made me hungry!
Tam, I bet it is good... reminds me of Rice, sliced green beans, ground beef, I have not tried beef jerky... I go wild with rice it goes with everything oh don't forget the mushrooms, and sliced almonds, mighty tasty ... Thanks Tam - Andy
Great input Tam! Especially about the Greens and vitamin C. Your rice, greens and jerky mixture looks like a great trail meal. I'm going to try it. Thanks!
Tam, what is it you have on your skirt. It looks like it allows you better mobility. My wife prefers skirts for her everyday wear, and that strap looks like a good christmas stocking stuffer.
I've been testing this skirt in all kinds of weather it's one I'm going to share a review on. It does have a strap, and it's amazing how handy it is! I prefer skirts all the time and am also in the middle of sewing up some new ones.
Once again Tam you have given me another tool to add to my culinary arsenal. I am gonna need a pack mule just to carry all the meal ideas I want to try my next trip to the bush.
Hey Tam and Dave, for a cheap dehydrator for jerky and herbs, I use a 20 inch box fan that I already have anyway, and then I pick up some PAPER air filters like you use in a CH&A unit for the home...the grooves in the filter hold herbs and jerky in place, just attach tot he front of the fan with bungy straps, set to low, and put in a corner somewhere...makes the house smell great...lol you can reuse the filters if drying herbs and such...but not the jerky.....usually only get 2 uses then
Great video Tam, i oftem make this in the house...minus the dock....just rice and jerky with a little lemon pepper....great taste...full of carbs and protien..and quick...thanks for another great idea.
@TheHellBound666 You're making me have great memories of the huge salmon we would get out of the Bulkley river in BC! Had friend who made the best ever smoked salmon jerky!
For Vitamin C, I just make some pine needle tea :D
What I also do is get a nalgene bottle with a lid, put some pine needles in it, shake it up, and it's pretty much a flavored piny water.
Also, chewing pine needles can have a rough sort of taste, but after they soak in the nalgene bottle for a little while, they kind of taste like lemmon.
@JoshReinholdUSMC I love my pine tea! Don't forget with all the "flu" news, I'm reading a lot about an ingredient in the Tamiflu drug that is found in pine, fir and spruce, search out Shikimic Acid.
@chrissept21 yep could buy it but prefer making my own. You can do white, brown or wild :) It really wasn't salty because rice and greens normally take salt but I didn't add salt, they complimented each other perfectly :)
Thanks Tam, I'll keep that in mind. At the end it looked like you liked it so much that I thought you were going to tell me it's time for me to go clean my room and eat it all by yourself. Hope your finger is doing good. May God bless.
Another good one Tam. Reminds me of a friend who hiked the Appalachian trail and his favorite meal was rama noodle, jerky, and peanut butter. Now I know what to do with my leftover rice. I like the idea of adding spices and dried veggies for an easy trail food.
Hi again, Miss Tam-- I sure wish u would foster my fame & I; you and our family are just fountains of knowledge.
