Gioacchino Rossini, of course.... They are from the same time...the transition of the Classicism to Romantism.... an Italian and a French one...But, maybe you're right... You must hear the overtures of "Il Turco In Italia" (Rossini - 1814) and "Zampa" (Hérold - 1831)... Then tell me what do you think about the influnces....
And I won't be surprised if Herold was strongly influenced by another composer, about one year younger...

Avec Hérold, on est au carrefour de deux écoles :
- des réminiscences de la tradition italienne (Rossini, Cimarosa essentiellement).
- une œuvre bien ancrée dans la tradition française du demi-caractère (Méhul, Boieldieu, Catel...).
À écouter absolument : Zampa ou la fiancée de marbre, Le Pré aux clercs...
En option : La Fille mal gardée, Marie.
À paraître : Les 2 symphonies et les sonates pour piano.
