@SteelJans You might've also noticed the 203, which adds to the bulk of the weapon. This kitted-out M4 was pretty different then my no-frills ironsight M16A2. At this point, in 2005, not every soldier was being trained to qualify on or even shoot an M4 like nowadays. At the time I was only qualified on the M16 and M249 and while deployed it wasn't deemed necessary for most of our unit's weapons to have modifications and the like. Only our gunners got the "cool shit" like the M4/M203/ACOG.
@ggmedia I did notice the M203. As a firearms instructor for 20+ years I know the added weight of the 40mm launcher aids in reducing weapon recoil. Pulling any shoulder fired weapon snug into your shoulder is day one stuff. You learn that when you are snapping in dry fire before going live.

@freedomfighter150 An M4 has a sightly higher recoil because of the shorter barrel and a shorter buffer spring tube. 203's are fun to shoot, but the launcher on the end of the barrel is a pain in the ass when trying to maintain a good shooting position.

There is no good or wrong way to shoot a weapon. I'm soldier for Canada's army and i shoot a c8. When i shoot i put my front hand on my magazine i shoot better that way. Trust me in a firefight whichever the way you shoot your gun if you stay alive, it was a good way.

Many thanks to the observant and levelheaded commenters that noticed and realized that I was shooting an (at the time) unfamiliar weapon at a recreational FOB range. The target I was using was a picture of Osama that I drew and was near the ground at maybe 100 meters away. I've since mastered the M4. Thanks again, y'all.

Some people are just dicks. But for the record, it's just a more natural stance for men to lean forward with a weapon. The only time guys lean backwards are if the weapon is ridiculously heavy or they are of a young age and don't have the strength (arms or back).
Also, while in uniform, it's just awkward for people to see a uniformed man shoot that way. If a girl did it, no one would even notice...
Old timers were taught to shoot similar to this. Keep your elbows in so they won't get shot off, brace your forward elbow against your body tilt your hips forward so the larger muscles and skeleton stabilize your aim and stand profile to your target so you are less of a target to the opposition. Things change over the course of time but the old timers had their reasons for doing things their way i.e. no body armor, larger rifle and smaller shooter etc.

No. In any branch of the service this guy would be yelled at by his drill officer in boot camp. He doesn't have any training. Trust me on this one. @y0dablunt I've shot in competitive rifle matches since I was 12. I know what it's like to have a correct shooting position, follow all of the range rules, yada yada. But if I'm out fuckin around at a buddy's farm, or just popping rounds downrange for the hell of it, all of that can go out the window. Your dad's AR also doesn't have a 5 lb. M203 attached to it either, so you or your sister wouldn't know how to handle that quite as well.

@DodgeViperACRX I haven't shot in any CMP matches since I was about 12 , I spent much more time shooting competitively in the service. (AG or combat type matches with both rifle and pistol.) There are matches at my local club that I'll shoot in every once and a while, but I prefer sitting down somewhere that I can shoot at over 500-600yds and just mess around. I use either a Rem. 700 for that, or a Springfield M1A NM. Would love to get my hands on either one of your rifles though, nice guns.

No. In any branch of the service this guy would be yelled at by his drill officer in boot camp. He doesn't have any training. Trust me on this one. If he were to do this in front of any one knowledgeable of rifles he would be corrected instantly. Plug in marine speed reload on the search bar and you'll see a proper shooting stance.

@y0dablunt I've shot in competitive rifle matches since I was 12. I know what it's like to have a correct shooting position, follow all of the range rules, yada yada. But if I'm out fuckin around at a buddy's farm, or just popping rounds downrange for the hell of it, all of that can go out the window. Your dad's AR also doesn't have a 5 lb. M203 attached to it either, so you or your sister wouldn't know how to handle that quite as well.

@DodgeViperACRX I haven't shot in any CMP matches since I was about 12 , I spent much more time shooting competitively in the service. (AG or combat type matches with both rifle and pistol.) There are matches at my local club that I'll shoot in every once and a while, but I prefer sitting down somewhere that I can shoot at over 500-600yds and just mess around. I use either a Rem. 700 for that, or a Springfield M1A NM. Would love to get my hands on either one of your rifles though, nice guns.
