I agree that they focused too much on Kate, but they did that *because* of the different ending--and that was the change I was really upset with. Despite how much I loved it in the book, leaving out some of the other character's stories made sense (e.g Julia/Campbell; Jesse)--just to keep the movie short enough. But to change the ending like that... when that's such a powerful message about the fleetingness of *everyone's* life... that's overlooking the most important (imo) theme of the book.
The book is simply better. Better character development, Jesse is a more interesting troubled character, Julia Romano is a good character but I think they removed her because they didn't want a love story in the film.
I still say that the book is better. love both and the actors were amazing but I hate that they completely changed the ending. I like that Anna died in the book and Kate ending up living. At least then you got a little bit of a happy ending because Kate lived, which was the thing everyone was fighting for. i think that that's a little better than, boo hoo Kate died I so hoped she was going to live.
To be honest, I watched the movie first and then read the book and I have to say I love both of them equally. Particularly because you get to keep Anna in the movie, while you get to keep Kate in the book. Having both these perspectives it gives you a strangely comforting feeling...
Needless to say in My Sister's Keeper I found both favorite book AND movie
I agree the book is way better! I'm almost done with the book. I tried to watch the movie but stop only a little way into the movie. The emotion was not in it as well as the book portrays it and they changed a lot of things including the ages
Personaly I like to watch the film before I read the book. It helps me grasp the concept a bit better. Also, people always say how they are disappointed when they see the movie after the book, i get to be pleasently surprised :) I did like the ending in the book, definitly a good twist - It was also kind of beautiful, she came into the world to save her sister, when she had fufiled her fate, she left.
@EmilyK95 that's exactly how I like to do it, too! it is so much more rewarding to watch the movie first and then find out all of the many many details that they had to leave out. it really always is a pleasant surprise and that way I get to love both in their own ways...
The book is beautiful, honest and genuinely emotionally enriched and deep. The film...tries to portray the same thing and in my eyes, fails to do so. To me, the motive behind the film was to force false emotion out into the world through this story they changed entirely for the sake of gaining box office megabucks. (perhaps why big star Cameron Diaz was cast) The film is typically Hollywood, precisely as it appears in the trailer and does not serve the original story justice. Read the book!!
I LOVED the book!! I cried my EYES OUT!!--- I have not seen the film.. but would like too... just as an avid reader I always prefer the book :D I just wonder how they could actually get all of that emotion into such a short timeframe? The ending literally knocked me over.
After watching this movie, I loved it so much that I was inspired to write a book. It's called From the Start, and it's basically the same exact point of this almost. A girl falls in love with a boy and finds out he has leukemia. It's a really amazing love story and if you liked My sister's Keeper the movie or book, then you'll love this too<3
go to wattpad.com & type in "From the Start" & enjoy xoxo.
the book was way better! im not saying the movie is bad. kate doesn't even die in the end though. anna does. in a car accident. so the movie just wasn't accurate.
It seems like in Jodi's new novel 'Sing You Home' there's a little reference to the film of 'My Sister's Keeper'. At one point when the main charatcer Zoe's mother is talking about a movie they went to go see she says "I didn't like it. The book's ending was better"
I liked the book and movie both, but unlike some of the comments on here I liked the ending of the movie better. I found it far more realistic that Anna magically becoming an available donor and Kate's getting better. Just felt really soap opera-ish and contrived. In pretty much all other ways the book was better though. Wasn't really a fan of the casting in the movie vs. the book characters! :)
I thought this was going to be interesting and enjoyed it to the end where the ending just basically fell apart for me. I was thinking it was a great ethical story about the child wanting to have the right to say yes on her own vs the actual ending.
hey guys i say the movies amazing!....if u havent read the book yet.. i mean i rlly like how the movie is so real. u see i am visual i need to get the picture in my head and this helped but the ending sucks in the movie. still very sad but both good. but books better! movies real and true rlly sad.
I watched the movie and it brought me to tears at several points because I have an older sister. We used to be really close but when I watched this movie we were fighting so it touched me even harder.
I will eventually read the book but I really don't like people who say that the book is better or that the movie is better. People this is Hollywood. They never follow exactly what's written. So quit bitching and complaining and enjoy it for what it is.
They actually messed up jesse (the older brother). In the book he was really a bad ass and they really went through with his character and background story.
I've read the book but haven't seen the movie yet.....I guess from the comments that I shouldn't see the movie? I really don't know how different they are but the book was great. Love it :)
I haven't read the book yet, but the movie didn't touch me that much.. I'm looking forward to reading the book instead.. I thought the Taylor bit was a little unnecessary.
Actually, Taylor was the turning point between Kate's choice between living and dying. She lost the only thing she wanted and yeah... though the way the movie put that part it seemed misplaced.
If you're planning on watching the movie, watch it before you read the book, If you read the book first, dont bother with the movie; it'll just piss you off! The movie is soooo much more different than the book!
i ddnt read the book but i saw the movie and thot it was really gud. it made me cry wen they went to the beach. but maybe in comparison its not so good but the movie alone is great and i recommend it:)
i loved the book..i just really didnt like the ending....but why the hell cant directors just leave the book as it is..the movie had almost nothing to do with the book....
@butterflysam1987 They are both really good, their are things about the movie that are better than the book, but i think we can all agree that the ending to the book is better
A perfect example of why not to read the book first and then see the movie. If anyone has read the book already, I implore you to prepare yourself for a let down cause they always seem to leave something out in the movie that you would consider the best part out of the title.
If anyone has watched the movie already, and loved it alone, then the book is most likely going to be better.
i read the book and i havent watched the movie yet the book was totally amaazing and moving i luved luved luved it so much the movie trailer looks pretty good but i always lyke the book better than the movie even if the movie waz good
ugh, why cant producers just leave books as they are? If they think they feel the need to change the book (on a HUGE scale) then they should LEAVE IT ALONE and not make a movie: or thats my opinion at least.
otherwise im disappointed lol.
then again i havent seen the film yet so....i dont know; i might even like it lol..

PRODUCERS THESE DAYS!!
they think tht if they take the 'big parts' out of a book n make it into a film then its ok.
but the little parts they miss are important; without them the big parts are nothing.
