Balki's sheepherder's intuition allowed him to pick the winning teams in the company football pool. He won for weeks before realizing he was sucking the fun out of the game for everyone else. So Mary Anne convinced him to lose on purpose, but Larry, being greedy, copied the losing picks and bet $10,000 with a bookie. He then owed the bookie $10,000, but he had no way to pay up. That's why his kneecaps were in danger.
