Its near Christmas, not on christmas day. Krampus is Sanct Nicolaus´ servant. Nicolaus gives sweets to the good kids and Krampus beats misbehaving kids (of course all kids are always good, and krampus helps nicolaus giving away sweets :-)

This tradition is the origin of the american santa clause.
