Obama Talks To Matt Lauer On Education Part 1 of 3

We were very poor, and my parents made sacrifices, even paying on a sliding scale, to send me to a decent school while being taxed for public education.

I didn't learn anything in public school. Everything I learned was from people I asked to show me things, books, the internet and educational tv and tapes. I had a good start from private elementary school so I had the will to learn despite the ineffective jr high and high school classes.

Public education is irreparably damaged, if you want better education in this country what is needed is no taxes for a failed public school. Some charter schools, private schools, home schooling, these are the only places our children can still receive an education.

@morghanphoenix De-funding the school system is not the answer.

The teachers are responsible for reaching all youth regardless of what families they come from and regardless of poor parenting practices. They need to be held accountable. A lot of parents suck but a lot of teachers shouldn't. Merit pay and getting rid of tenure is needed.

when it all comes down to it, it depends on the education value a student has. A good student will reach out and ask for help from his/her teachers. A student that don't care about education simply won't care even if you force them to go to school. One of the first thing we should do is to emphasize the importance of education to the students, not firing teachers.

sometimes our teachers union protects bad teacher. We have a teacher in our junior high that is protected by the union. He should not be able to teach potty training. The teachers do need to be looked an overhauled also. When I tried to take my daughter out of his class, the school denied and replied "if we took every child out of his class because of parents requests, he wouldn't have a class to teach". We need to look at all aspects of education right now

There is basically no research supporting what Obama talks about and is pushing as federal policy.

Education will never improve until we recognize the problem. And it's not teachers.
