As we say here in Australia.."God bless the Salvos"....the only religion that does not care who you are, what color you are or what God you believe in....they will will always help you out...
In those days.... every quiz show, situation comedy, drama or variety show would have a Christmas show every year. And no one minded. No one ever complained.
Nowadays the ACLU, various athiest organizations and left-wing nutjobs in the media and government would protest not only the playing of Christmas carols, but the word Christmas itself. How we have fallen....
@TheBlueyedblond Not true. WML is not a government agency. And the guests aren't violating any workplace rights pertaining to the panel and staff. So the ACLU would have no interest in the matter. As far as I know, atheists (and many believers too) only protest carols when they are performed in public schools. The parties you mention have no influence over the religious content of broadcast tv programs. Not then and not now.
@TheBlueyedblond Thats the truth, it's a shame people let it happen. I always say Merry Christmas & if some people don't like it thats just too bad. What comes around goes around & one day the nut cases in the ACLU will get there's!!!!!
@jukeboxman1950 Last time I looked there are a lot of great Christmas programs on TV every year. And, people all over the country say Merry Christmas every year. Your comment seems more like you are angry at people then a comment on what really happens every year in December. Please relax and enjoy your religion and don't lash out at others.
Merry Christmas! Although it's May now but I can feel the Christmas spirit.
It was a wonderful segment of WML? and I enjoyed every bit of it!
The more and more I see of this show, it makes the 50's and 60's appear to be a wonderful era...and despite some of the bad and sad things I know of that period, it makes me wish I was born back then to enjoy it.
What a wonderful clip. It encapsulates all that was so great about WML: Wit, sophistication, collegiality, and graciousness towards guests. The fact that it was a Christmas episode makes it more special.
To view another one, search for "Arlene playing trombone. Clear version" to see Arlene Francis play it on "I've Got A Secret". There's also another WML episode available where the panelists try to identify a woman who turns out to be Arlene's trombone teacher.
Well and who knows how much they actually got. From Gil Fates book, it's obvious that the MGs got paid a flat fee of (I think) $500. These guys might've been given that much
This episode is highly unusual for two reasons. The first reason occurs in this clip. I cannot remember another Sunday night episode where musicians played a song ... well...hymn carol. Daly, Gil Fates reported in his book, opposed demonstration stunts on principle. He must have been in the Christmas spirit -- or he did not have veto power in 1955.
To pyrofella: Your comment has what to do with anything?

It was Dorothy who said flip the cards, John, my treat. That was a very nice gesture.
I don't think I've ever seen a woman play the trombone before. Funny, no?
