Way to ruin the only semi decent song you've written in recent(ish) years. What on Earth is up with the dire new lyrics in the chorus and that crappy "dramatic" drum stomp "because because because"
I think the new album will not be called Songs of Ascent. In fact I think it'll be something completely different to that original concept. I also think they won't play many songs off it live until it's released. Mercy for instance was written years ago so I reckon most of the new stuff hasn't even been heard yet.
I love the name Song of Ascents. Song of Acsents in scriptures is related to elevation of the soul & Psalms. This is a very special name with these very special songs. It will be Great! I'm looking forward to it!! Can't wait for it to come out.
massive U2 fan but this is easily the lamest attempt the 4 have taken to get a song going. It's U2 by numbers and would even look weird with the Coldplay boys (and they're kind of doing usually the rather lame U2 impressions). Plus the 'Beacuse we can, we must" lyrics are just cringeworthy. Bono running out of ideas and using his debt cancellation speeches now as lyrics ... this song better stays in the archives as some sort of fan oddity.
I'm still not sure the song has changed enough to be its own thing. Any music theorists out there that can tell me if this song is still stealing from "Miracle Drug"? I don't know myself, but I'd encourage everyone to listen to "Miracle Drug" next to this song.
(Maybe this is a case where the better sister-song got passed over and now U2 regrets it.)
I wonder how many people thought they were about to play Acrobat when they said they had never played it on stage before.
either way it's awesome to hear some new stuff, not sure if I like this as well as the current studio cut, the verses work better here but the old chorus of "Love hears when I lie, love puts the blue back in my eye, love will come again, and I'll be gone again." just feels better than this chorus.
and lol at Gravity searching for a sound..ground! gotta love bono.
U2 sure do need a good album after their last two have been very mediocre with a couple of great songs on, I love the band but with Bono's declining voice they've become more depandent on gimmicks rather than voice or music. Will still go see them live, maybe time to re-invent themselves again by stripping themelves down.Seen Simple minds & Green day, Snow Patrol (who have supported them on this tour) & The Twang lately & live in a small venue without all the gadgetry would all show U2 the way.
This is a really good song that has the potential to be a U2 classic. Hopefully, in typical U2 fashion, they will continue to modify it in the studio and experiment with what they've been working on with this track. The HTDAAB version is too long, but it has some great lines that Bono cut for this live performance. I think a synthesis of the two versions would be interesting.
Their next album is going to rival The Joshua Tree or How To Dismantle an Atomic bomb in quality for sure!! Im waiting on the announcement like the rest of the world!
@kellykinsellives HTDAAB was a tender and beautiful album with a couple of misses on it. But songs like COBL, Crumbs, One Step Closer and Original of the Species are very far from crap in my book.
i think the other long version has better lyrics and soul. but this is great too! i wish i could get this version on my ipod... help anyone? They hit gold with this song anyway you look at it- in my opinion- better than any song on no line on the horizen.
THis song really sucks now thanks to Bono. The new lyrics are stupid and awful. Listne to the studio version of this song and the lyrics were great but this idiot goes and changes them to the crap? this is why I hate U2 now. they are ruining their own music with the crap performances of the music today
Once again Bono ruins a good song with garbage lyrics. This song sounds like sh#t now. The unfinshed studio version was great and this idiot goes and ruins the best part of the song with these crap lyrics
Lovely song. I can see why it didn't make the cut for Atomic Bomb though. It's too similar to Miracle Drug, especially the piano riff. And it wouldn't really have been at home on No Line on the Horizon. Mercy is what the Americans would call U2 101.
I really hope they put the full version of this song on Songs Of Ascent as it is U2 at their best, this and Every Breaking Wave,Glastonbury, Stingray etc this is U2 at their best, so please guys listen!!!!
OMG! Finally! The lyrics have changed up a bit (I miss 'you wanted violins and you got Nero' but it is fantastic!! THANK YOU U2!!! PLEASE PUT THIS ON YOUR NEXT CD!!
@gtrman99 I'm actually pretty annoyed that they keep Terry as HIDDEN keyboardist. If it's a programmed backgroud tape that's fine and so is on-stage piano man, but why keep the guy hidden? Ok, the answer probably is: they've always been just the four guys on stage and keep on being.
@HansMichael69 As Bono says, "From the underworld...Terry Lawless on the Hammond...!" I know Terry well, and it works out for him - i think he got a Hammond endorsement out of it. Would be nice though to let him sit on stage and be an active part of the musical support.
@gtrman99 "Would be nice though to let him sit on stage and be an active part of the musical support." Sure, live music should be live. No behind-the-curtain guys. Unless the band uses pre-programmed parts.
I love this song and it's so awesome to see them dust it off. The original song was great but a little long winded (6:31 mins) and raw. The lyrics are very strong and Bono hasn't written anything like it in over 20 years. I can't wait to hear the final version. I wasn't sure if I liked the "because, because, because" part at first but I like it now.
With Mercy being finished, and the previewing of Glastonberry, North Star and Every Breaking Wave...I feel we are witnessing the main songs from the next Album...If they don´t over produce, it could be one of U2´s finest...
@MsWAlexander1 They rehearsed this song twice in Istanbul. I heard it. they did two full run throughs of the song but never performed it that night so Bono wasn't exactly telling the truth when he said they had only soundcheck rehased it once
i agree Antoniothegrace. great song, but original was better. What happend to the lyrics " when I was ripping the stitches..without two cents to rub..im diggin the ditches.. for someone else's luck" ? those lyrics and arrangements were great. hope that you guys can integrate those back to the song. thanks u2
@wazzumichael a middle version sounds good to me. the new version is shorter and more deliberate, which is good. but they should go back to the original and should make it shorter =) comments aside, this song reminds me of walk on

@234711 Some things let me think that this Becomes U2 Best Album Ever. The New Numbers are EPIC. And his voice is Totally back. Maybe even better then 2001.
....it's just us, souls allowed to trust and there's no one left to trust...I Love when Bono plays his guitar, souls allowed to love........it's just us, because we can, we must......
I really love this song.......your heart is aching, your heart is my home, we were mean for each other, you and I.........because, because, because we can we must........
Me gusta el inicio y el final pero el medio me es incongruente sera porque me acostumbre a la version original si Bono hubiese mantenido la letra original estariamos todos contentos ojala la cancion este permanente en el setlist...
I never thought they could see this as a live song. It's a beautiful song. They are just testing it. It's a new way to rehearse their songs. If they have decided to play live all these unreleased songs that means they are losing the fear to lose fan base. Some will agree some others will not. Who cares. It's U2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think the 2004 version is stunning and this version is great but it is still work in progress as Bono is still tinkering with his lyrics ... cant wait for the finished album track and hope they keep it as a 6 minute 30 second Epic ......the countdown is on til Songs of Ascent...
As far as the critics, first and foremost, I will admit that I am a 30 year HUGE fan. But I am also a fair critic, mostly realizing that everyone has their own 'preference'.
But for anyone to knock these guys for trying out their new stuff live before recording it, is quite 'rock God confident' that we love about these guys. They shift and evolve and although you can always recognize them, they are always new.
These new songs are not published, so stand by...
an example of their creativity is the last single from rattle and hum [angel of harlem] and the 1st single from achtung baby [the fly] no other band would have the brains or the balls to change their sound so much
much better. Trimmed the fat off and replaced the boring "love..." chorus with some decent lyrics. They've got 3 new hit singles already - North Star, Every Breaking Wave, and now this. They should release the album next summer. U2 are still doing great work and are safe for another 3 years atleast.
I really like the lyrics of this new version, especially the "because" bit. I just hope they work and perfect the arrangement and bring back the "rippen the stitches..." before the chorus and bring back the "I feel nothing...." bit as well
When I first heard this song on U2's unreleased and rare compilation, I loved the song but always thought it was incomplete and missing that certain something. But I think U2 have finally completed this song and love this arrangement!!
That wasn't the Mercy performance we've been waiting for. Native Son to Vertigo made sense, but they've turned a potentially great song into an average one. None of the new songs are blowing me away...
@Gurjitsd07 You know what dude let me tell you something. U2 has earned the crown as the hardest working rock band. They have constantly changed shape for every new album and the theme for their new albums changed. They went from War to Unforgettable Fire. 2 albums that sound nothing alike. They went from RAttle and HUm to acthung baby. Theyve consistently came through. Even on All that u cant leave behind. they won 22 grammys. what more do u want. let them have fun. Quit being a critic
@espinozafn I'm a huge U2 fan. I saw them 3 times last year and own every album. I think No Line is amazing, but they can release less demanding stuff such as the two previous albums. They themselves admit this. So far, the new stuff sounds like they want the record sales and doesn't sound amazing. I doubt they'll release these tracks before major work in the studio. So 'dude' I think I'm entitled to my opinion.
version 2004 is better..but i like and hope released for the new album... This song is more beautiful the songs included at the album NLOTH and HTDABomb ... MERCY, NORTH STAR and EVERYBREAKING WAWE are the best song the last 10 years of u2. I hope the next album is different the last 3 . Sorry for my english, i'm italian..8 october u2 live Rome!! CIAO
Great that U2 have finally played Mercy live! Edge's guitar solo sounds sweet, but I really think it should go into the verse that was in the older version, the one that goes "I can hear so much, Feeeel Nothing" I think that would really pick the song up instead of going for the standard chorus again, Also I think Larry could come up with a more interesting beat for the verses, maybe a rolling tom beat kinda like in Pearl Jam's song In My Tree, Brilliant Track, Alotta Potential!!!
This new version reminds me 'Achtung baby sessions' song named 'Morning Child' that was the blue print for 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild horses'. Original 'Mercy' seems like it will have a similar future like that song, the basic track, and few lyrics will reach the final release, and it's cool to have both versions: the working process song and the final product performed live.
I really wanted this song to finish as soon as possible. It's one of those times where you have a good idea about a song that lasts for two seconds and you stretch it to 5 minutes. There is a reason they didn't release it back then. I hope they don't release it in the future.
Thisi s a great performance. Besides there is nothing wrong with a little experimentation. IT is a new song after all, it might still require some work. Perhaps they shouldn't bother and just play streets, one, pride over the new stuff. Thatm ight satisfy the idiots who moan when they try something new.
@nakedcloud Agree with you totally, was in a foul mood when i posted that response, Mercy is one of the best they have written i guess i was expecting a bit more , and as for diehard ,yeah i saw them 84 UF tour Wembley then *& JT Wembley ZOOTV Wembley, Roundhay Park POPMART, MEN Elevation, Croke Park Vertigo, Croke park Twice 360, Helsinki Twice 360, ill remove my comment as im embaressed by it now, and as the tattoo on my back says "Smell the flowers while you can" I am a true fan, TREVOR!!!!!
Mercy is a great song.....and U2 singing it live finally is a joy to the fans....But U2 don´t kill the song with over production...Last night in Zurich was great, but playing the songs back to back...the raw original is way better.
Please cut out the ' because because because ' bit...doesn´t work.
Don´t stress about the song being too long or too messy...remember Bad and Elvis Presley in America.........LOVE MERCY but needs to be left alone.
Ax, Mark, thank you for the good job you're doing every concert, got to love you.
I'm glad the band played the song live, I'm not such a fan of the original version, but here it seems to be taking off, love the "because, because, because..." part and the new rythm in the chorus and hope they finish and release it one day.
No "cause I'm ripping the stiches/you've got two hands to rub/I'm digging the ditches/of someone else's luck" no "love is justice and charity/love brings with it a clarity" no "We're binary code/a one and a zero/you wanted violins/and you got Nero" EQUALS FAIL. Way to take a GREAT song and absolutely eviscerate it, boys.
GROOOOUND... SOOOOOOOUND!
I love the original version to much that I had to stop this when Bono started changing the lyrics. He killed the song.

LOVE U2 ... BONO IS MY GOD... THIS IS A SPECIAL SONG, BUT .. THE ORIGINAL REMAINS IN MY HEART... WHY CHANGE THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG AFTER 5 YEARS??
MISSING BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF THIS SONG, THE LYRICS WAS BETTER AND THE EDGE'S GUITAR BETTER OF THE PLAN... WAS THE TOP OF SOUND U2.
THE "OLD" MERCY, FOR ME.. WAS BETTER...
FROM FAN, I GAVE MY OPINION, I HOPE YOU AGREE..
AntonioTheGrace 1 year ago
Me gusta el inicio y el final pero el medio me es incongruente sera porque me acostumbre a la version original si Bono hubiese mantenido la letra original estariamos todos contentos ojala la cancion este permanente en el setlist...

I never thought they could see this as a live song. It's a beautiful song. They are just testing it. It's a new way to rehearse their songs. If they have decided to play live all these unreleased songs that means they are losing the fear to lose fan base. Some will agree some others will not. Who cares. It's U2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IO AMO GLI U2... QUESTA E' UNA CANZONE SPECIALE, MA.. LA VERSIONE ORIGINALE CI E' RIMASTA NEL CUORE... PERCHE' CAMBIARLA DOPO 5 ANNI???
MANCANO DEI PEZZI MOLTO BELLI, IL TESTO ERA MIGLIORE E LA CHITARRA DI THE EDGE AL POSTO DEL PIANO LA RENDEVA COME IL TOP DEL SUONO U2.
DA FAN, HO DATO IL MIO PARERE, SPERO SIATE D'ACCORDO..

Maybe it just needs to sink in, but I don't like the conspicuousness of the piano or the new lyrics.

I dont understand why Bono change the lyric..

I believe that the old lyrics are far better!!!
Not that these are bad,but the new are my choice!

i think the 2004 version is stunning and this version is great but it is still work in progress as Bono is still tinkering with his lyrics ... cant wait for the finished album track and hope they keep it as a 6 minute 30 second Epic ......the countdown is on til Songs of Ascent...

again great work U2Gigs!!
These new songs are not published, so stand by...

an example of their creativity is the last single from rattle and hum [angel of harlem] and the 1st single from achtung baby [the fly] no other band would have the brains or the balls to change their sound so much
remmers55 1 year ago 2
@remmers55 true except that angel of harlem was the 2nd single. All i want is you was the last one.
LakesharkEps 1 year ago
much better. Trimmed the fat off and replaced the boring "love..." chorus with some decent lyrics. They've got 3 new hit singles already - North Star, Every Breaking Wave, and now this. They should release the album next summer. U2 are still doing great work and are safe for another 3 years atleast.
markyboy84 1 year ago
I really like the lyrics of this new version, especially the "because" bit. I just hope they work and perfect the arrangement and bring back the "rippen the stitches..." before the chorus and bring back the "I feel nothing...." bit as well

And again a song they havent released yet (although lots of people already knew the raw version).
Thats cool, I think they've never before experimented that much with new material.
Really looking forward to a new record out.

I've always loved "Mercy" since 2005.
Today, after 5 long years those very emphasized piano notes just burn my soul......
Thanks once again Irish guys!

2004 version is very stitched together you could tell it was a work in progress instead of bitching lets applaud the boys for trying out new stuff!

When I first heard this song on U2's unreleased and rare compilation, I loved the song but always thought it was incomplete and missing that certain something. But I think U2 have finally completed this song and love this arrangement!!
LuthienBono 1 year ago
That wasn't the Mercy performance we've been waiting for. Native Son to Vertigo made sense, but they've turned a potentially great song into an average one. None of the new songs are blowing me away...
Gurjitsd07 1 year ago
@Gurjitsd07 You know what dude let me tell you something. U2 has earned the crown as the hardest working rock band. They have constantly changed shape for every new album and the theme for their new albums changed. They went from War to Unforgettable Fire. 2 albums that sound nothing alike. They went from RAttle and HUm to acthung baby. Theyve consistently came through. Even on All that u cant leave behind. they won 22 grammys. what more do u want. let them have fun. Quit being a critic
espinozafn 1 year ago 3
@espinozafn I'm a huge U2 fan. I saw them 3 times last year and own every album. I think No Line is amazing, but they can release less demanding stuff such as the two previous albums. They themselves admit this. So far, the new stuff sounds like they want the record sales and doesn't sound amazing. I doubt they'll release these tracks before major work in the studio. So 'dude' I think I'm entitled to my opinion.
Gurjitsd07 1 year ago
@Gurjitsd07 Well thats cool. I could understand that. Your entitled to your opinion as I am with my own opinion. Cheers Mate

FelixMerchant 1 year ago
This new version reminds me 'Achtung baby sessions' song named 'Morning Child' that was the blue print for 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild horses'. Original 'Mercy' seems like it will have a similar future like that song, the basic track, and few lyrics will reach the final release, and it's cool to have both versions: the working process song and the final product performed live.
santiago2u 1 year ago
@santiago2u Exactly....Luckily both versions are excellent. Initially I prefer the 04 version, but this one is pretty catchy.

I really wanted this song to finish as soon as possible. It's one of those times where you have a good idea about a song that lasts for two seconds and you stretch it to 5 minutes. There is a reason they didn't release it back then. I hope they don't release it in the future.

oy! Magsieboy - only 25 years! not so diehard are you? like to see you get up in front of a U2 crowd and remember every single word.
We are none of us perfect and we love Bono more for his little lyrical lapses - it makes life more interesting.
BTW U2 actually listen to their supporters - we put it on their web how much we would love this song and lo and behold they granted our wish.
29 year U2 supporter - we are no mere fans - fans just create wind - wind blows - like your opinion.
nakedcloud 1 year ago
@nakedcloud I agree my friend.
Thisi s a great performance. Besides there is nothing wrong with a little experimentation. IT is a new song after all, it might still require some work. Perhaps they shouldn't bother and just play streets, one, pride over the new stuff. Thatm ight satisfy the idiots who moan when they try something new.
u2atomicbomb 1 year ago
@nakedcloud Agree with you totally, was in a foul mood when i posted that response, Mercy is one of the best they have written i guess i was expecting a bit more , and as for diehard ,yeah i saw them 84 UF tour Wembley then *& JT Wembley ZOOTV Wembley, Roundhay Park POPMART, MEN Elevation, Croke Park Vertigo, Croke park Twice 360, Helsinki Twice 360, ill remove my comment as im embaressed by it now, and as the tattoo on my back says "Smell the flowers while you can" I am a true fan, TREVOR!!!!!
magsieboy 1 year ago
I like it, but the greatest part from the original was " I can so much fear nothing..." part it was so passionate, it made the song different.
I can´t believe they removed it, maybe it´s difficult to sing live.

WOOOO WHAT A GREAT SONG AND LIVE IT'S EVEN BETTER
u2boy16 1 year ago
No "cause I'm ripping the stiches/you've got two hands to rub/I'm digging the ditches/of someone else's luck" no "love is justice and charity/love brings with it a clarity" no "We're binary code/a one and a zero/you wanted violins/and you got Nero" EQUALS FAIL. Way to take a GREAT song and absolutely eviscerate it, boys.
