@franklouuu is it my ancestor's fault that the english began the slave trade? no. neither side of my family is english, and if they were, they still wouldnt be at fault. try to understand that even at the outbreak of the american civil war only 2% americans owned slaves. slavery was an institution started by the english as a means of free labor on large plantations. same in brazil as you should know. is it brazil's fault there were slaves in brazil? no, it's portugal's.

I think that Obama's appeal is multi-facetted. To name those that comes to mind:
1. Obama will change in US foreign policy away from the Bush policies.
2. He is a uniquely charismatic person. The US has not had such a charismatic President since John Kennedy.
3. He is a liberal (not a socialist) and most Europeans are left of the US center.
4. He is African-American that has succeeded in a predominately white society. In the US, and only the US, we have reached that threshold.
