One of my fav. songs of all time... Unfortunately, I have WAY too many memories from the movie. The movie was way too close to home. I've been sober for almost 39 months now, and still love the song. Just can't watch the movie. Sting is one of the greatest artists of all time. He trancends his genre as if time stands still when he is singing. Magnificent!!! Even at 60, he is still much more talented than some of the newer "young guns" out there. GREAT!!!
@QAndJMovies2 When they told stories of real people who didn't have fun all the time... who suffered, who was in pain... who wanted to die... This movie is really sad... and Elizabeth Shue was grand.. I couldn't agree more with you
They don't make movies like this anymore. Only half-ass comedies and family animated movies to sell cinema tickets. The average movie-goer is now 13 years old.......
@ghosalmartin Lol i used to have a cd that did that but it would just play certain parts 2 or 3 times, i continued to listen to it, probably about 50 times and eventually I got used to it and now the song seems weird without it lol.
Es una canción muy interesante, totalmente sincronizada con la vivencia de la relacion tormentosa que se establece entre Sera y Ben. Una pelicula que nos enseña que a veces no es el amor el que nos une, sino los conflictos que arrastramos.
I truly think msquires comments are off key. Sting's rendition of this is incrediably moving and in keeping with the darkness of the plot. I like the husky sound at 2:45 as it fits the feel of the movie, a smoky, sultry, backdrop fuled with booze and pain. Less is more as there is no need to make fresh and old standard that is performed so hauntingly well.
@locoxguy lol.... @ first my english is not so well.... i said: i love this film, i saw it yesterday and that i cry all the time... Nicolas Cage are a great actor and Elisabeth Shue too... Thats all.... i hope u understand it now :)
@zitaperez agreed, this is one of the best soundtracks ever.. romantic by all means. cant stand watching the movie anymore however. and for you people commenting a couple weeks ago i cant believe you compared this to soccer moms. the pianist wasnt even a well known artist, just a studio musician. and smooth vocals.. soccer moms.. ugh
@New4day Nice post. It's a haunting rendition of a standard song. The problem is that so many excellent singers have - over the years - interpreted this song that Sting's version shows both the thinness of his voice (note the strain of "uncomfortably clear" at 2:45) and the dullness of the piano accompaniment (notably in the last half). A fresh rendition requires a lot more imagination than either singer or accompanist can muster.
@New4day The subject of the film was indeed alcoholism, however I think the underlying theme is about unconditional love. Could you still love someone while knowing they are set on self destruction? Something to consider.
I think this song is played in a few scenes. As example, I remember the scene in the dirty motel (where Cage breaks a cristal table) and I think there're fragments of the song in the night walking scenes. Anyway, the best thing I can say you: get the DVD and see the film again (a great one).
jrgj, the amount of respect or recognition a book gets worldwide, is entirely based on how it is marketed to those coutries, plain and simple, has nothing to do with demographical interest what so ever
@boaboie its not that cut and dry and i dont think she was asking about demographical as much as cultural interest. For example "Forest Gump" did extremely well in Latin America. It's a piece of art that spoke to this culture, i'm not educated enough to claim to understand why but apparently it did.
Serious question - being a fan of the movie/book ive noticed there is a big fan base for Spain(or Spanish speaking countries) and I wondering why this is so? Any constructive comments would be greatly appreciated.

@maggymayi - Yeah he performs it good but the song has about as much emotion as a drunk soccer mom at karaoke night. Wait, that's not right. At least drunk soccer moms try.
