  • top gears on!!! oh...

  • Incredible. Thanks for this amzing video.

And 9 idiots who should go elsewhere

  • par excellent!

  • Is that gold top Les Paul a Bonamassa?

  • @ddbarnes11 It's suppose to be a Dickey Betts signature series Gibson Les Paul. In an interview Dickey said he has about 30 guitars. The one he used as his go to guitar for live shows for many years was nicknamed "Goldie" and I think it's a 1957. The paint got messed up while it sat in the Rock & Roll hall of fame so Dickey painted it red. That sunburst Dickey is playing here is not it. Dickey also has a 56 Fender Strat hardtail. Those guitars from the 50's are very valuable now.

  • @boblackey1 ok cool dude.

  • Great video and idea. Needs to be done again with a better camera. You cant see which strings they are playing. I cant learn one thing from it.

  • my cover of this song from learning from this video

    watch?v=a-DEU3KceOo

  • thanks so much for doin this type video and its a real shame people let their children comment on youtube

  • Thats gotta be his kid there. looks just like him when he was that age.

  • Saw Dickey play in bangor this yr,was totally blown away! would have to be in my top ten list of guitarists.

  • that man is great guitar player

it's not that hard to play 60 note's in a second like many does ......this is a craftman, and the way he and duane play's is dificult .

Playing a song in harmony, so well thought-out is only for the better players among us.

peter green and jeremy spencer where also like them as joe wals & john felder and a few others .

  • Are u upset because u look like the guy in the video? He can get away with it cause his dad is famous--but for u it just makes you white trash. Good luck trying to understand a simple phrase built around a couple of primary chords--for you it is a real challenge. P.S. Are wearing a wife beater tee shirt and a backwards baseball hat?

  • I want the full video whats the name licks??

  • Cool video of Dicky, but does the young guy have to a girl's hairdo and a pink blouse?

  • I DON'T GET YOUR NEED TO TRASH THE YOUTH (SON) ON 'GOLDTOP)...YOU KNOW IT IS NOT ABOUT THE HAIR-OR GARB...... ESPECIALLY AFTER I FOLLOWED YOUR PICK OF DECON. SGT. PEPPER...THRILLING...AND THE ENDLESS ARRAY OF COVERS SHOWING GEORGE'S HARMONY LEAD IN THE SONG "IF I NEEDED SOMEONE" ... "BIRD CAN SING...". A GREAT FIND !!!

IN THE END -THANKS--VERY HIP STUFF...FOR A BEATLE LOVER. THANKS ,AFTER ALL...ARNIE

  • @arniemax1 It seemed funny at the time--I didn't really mean to trash the guy though. Hey, that "deconstructing Sgt. Pepper" video WAS cool; I'm glad you liked it. If you do a search of "Beatles isolated tracks" you might be interested in what pops up. And don't forget to look for backing tracks since your a fellow gtr. player. For example the backing track for Hendrix's "Red House"--good stuff.

  • @ratface111 Are you always a MORON or just when you post comments?

  • @ratface111 Yes. He is trying to make you feel uncomfortable.

  • @ratface111 That is Dickey'sson azzhole.

  • @lutherpotash

He still looks ridiculous--like your mother's face. I really don't care if he is a famous person's son.

  • @ratface111 Hmmmm...talking about peoples faces...wonder why the screen name ratface?? Dick.

  • @lutherpotash

opps--my last comment was directed at you. It starts with, "Are u upset because you look like the guy in the video?"

  • I saw Dicky at Biddey Mulligans, a small venue in Chicago back around 1988 or so. I stood about 4 feet from him near the stage. One of the worlds most original sounding artist. Very unique phrasing.

The best thing about a Allman Brothers concert is there are NO bad songs! Hope they do a tour with Dicky again before I'm gone.

  • you can get all the tabs at Ultimate Guitar....

  • Anyone know where to get this DVD?

  • @SuperEkliptor Could not have said it better. Like dickey said. "This guitar playing stuff we don't keep score of, nobody wins or loses"

As for my comment for this video...

I cant believe i found out about The Allman brothers band last month... I listen to the blues and i like to listen to some jazz. I especially love rock n roll. This band is basically a band that i should have been listening to years ago.

  • Very Nice. Thanks.

  • Dickey's son?

  • thank you( genius) Mr. Betts for combining Country , Rock, Jazz, Blues and a few other styles to create a sound I never get tired of.

  • Love it guys. If your ever out in Colorado come out and fish with us, wakeboard or just hang and play guitar. Thanks for your lesson and God bless you both. I am so proud of both of you.

    Tommy Phillips

  • come on how awesome is you tube, and Dickey Betts, were else can you get lessons from the artist themself

  • Yes, this is indeed real music.

Awsome harmonies with such an infectious groove.

    Killer technique too!

    Thank you gentlemen!!

  • @blueturtleman1 I cringe when I see the word technique (cause that's what my piano teacher used to yell at me when I was 7), but you're right man. The way Dickie and Duane (both of them) play guitar is just beautiful.

  • These are the best videos I have seen on YouTube.

I never knew I was playing these songs slightly wrong.

Where can I buy these videos, or at least, what is the title of them?

  • he kinda looks like that guy ,,,ricky betts

  • yea that one with the hat looks kinda slow, needs some checkered pants or somethin

  • i remember seeing ex player auction one of dickeys goldtops on ebay because he was sick but thats not been but bout 10 years

  • You gotta admit, that's pretty dang close! You guys should start a band together and play some Marshall Tucker covers and stuff.

  • @jwendt2003 hahaahaha ur kidding right?

  • @juliovac Which one is Marshall and which one is Tucker? Do they make those big amps?

  • dickie get over here and teach me ,,please

  • this is awesome.thx.

  • I remember seeing Dicky in Stuart Fla, He held a concert for his disabled neighbor in the early 80' Does anyone else remember this jam on his farm ?

  • Always be a favorite of mine! Classic!

  • Dickie should teach Derek Trucks how to play with fire because that boy plays like he practiced his scales REAL hard so his Uncle would put him in the band

  • @2JOHNNYT You smokin ?? DT is the balls, all day

  • One of my idols ole dickey betts

  • never thought I would see one of my idols teaching online

  • 2:36 to 3:52 sweeeeeeet

  • Duane is Dickeys son playing in this vid

  • i don't understand the end where it says Duane's part, wasn't he dead in '71 and this album came out in '73?

  • @userboy6 I don't know, maybe he means his son Duane's part?

  • @userboy6 It's talking about Duane Betts (Dickie's son), not Duane Allman.

  • Thank you, thank you.

  • say you, instead of figuring out each part by themselves forever, could someone tell me the interval between the two harmonies like whether its a 3rd or a 5th or w/e above the standout melody so i can just figure out the first melody and tell my pianist wat the harmony is so he can figure it out faster. can someone tell me if they know?

  • @RFV410 Seems like you're almost there yourself.

  • @RFV410 Those are moving harmonies...they aren't done in straight 3rds or all 5ths. And you need a guitar player to play these harmony lines with you, not a keyboard...and not a midi-guitar sound... for god sakes please not that. :-)

  • Great playing. Use to watch Allman's at the Sarasota,Fla Armory many years ago.

  • Thumbs up if you declare that Dickey Betts is THE! southern rock god and the 6 people can go fuck themselves!!!!!!!

  • @Zizzister Yeah, but I would never call the Allman's a southern rock band - they are way too cool for that racist moniker...

  • @deweypug dude you're right about the Allman Bros not being a "southern rock" band, but just because a band is from the south or is a "southern rock" band doesn't mean they are racist or white trash

  • @GeorgiaSouthern87 You are correct, but certainly you cannot deny that there is a groundswell of negativity in relation to racism with 'Southern Rock' and what it means to many other appreciators of music... Peace

  • @deweypug Your an idiot. Southern Rock is not racist.

  • pretty cool of DB to share the groove.

  • So sweet! Thanks!

  • nice playing guys. im very impressed.

i dont have any friends with any musical talent so utube has to be my guitar playin buddy.

it sure sux that all the young asshole kids nowadays do not play any instruments! Those little fuckers have no idea what fun they are missing out. Ive got a Takamine from the 60's and it is a sweet acoustic.

Good for me! I rip my acoustic out at a party and start with the DMB or Oasis songs and all the girls panties hit the deck! Stole your girl with my guitar!

  • God I love me a Cherry Burst Les Paul!!!

  • @Brennan29 It's the most beautiful thing on earth!

  • Bravo! One of my all time favorite players! Thanks for the good memories Dicky!

  • Hell yeah

  • This is such a hard song for me. Not because I can't play it but because i get lost in the middle of it. Stone sober I get lost, I can't imagine trying to play this stone (as they must certainly did back then)

  • Is that Dicky's famous gold top the little guy is playin

  • @incongra Coulld be, thats his son. The forehead gives it away.

  • @incongra No Dickey's famous gold top is red now. Dickey quit playing it in 1994 & switched to a PRS, then a Gibson ES-335 and his last years in the ABB Dickey played his old 56 Fender Strat hardtail mostly. The gold top was put in the rock&roll hall of fame. When Dickey got it back several years later, it had turned an ugly green so he stripped the paint off and painted it red. As fas as I know he leaves it at home now when he does go on the road and uses Gibson "custom shop" LPs now.

  • @boblackey1 very interesting thank you sir.

  • the high tones the young dude plays give it a california boulevard feel, youknow sun and no wind, lots of women...

  • This guy is a prince to do this and put it up there for us free.

  • although this is good it isnt really a lesson is it

  • Does anyone have any idea what this is from?

    Is there more?

Where do I send my money?

  • @SurferJoe1 send $59.95 + shipping to: J. Williamson, po box 3680 hickory,nc 28603

  • Ahh, I've always loved that guitar riff. I guess riff would be the right word? Anyway, I love it!

  • his son looks like he was picked right out of his ass!!!

  • Thanks for sharing that with us lads !

  • Love ya Dickie!

  • rate this comment if you know this song trom top gear

  • @moneill95 Yup :L

  • Who better than Dickey to teach us....what a treat!

  • What key does it change to at 1:34

  • this so KOOL...

  • This is quite possibly one of the best Les Paul guitar tunes ever.

  • Awesome!!! How cool is it that Dickie Betts, hell, ANY well-known musician shows you how to play a song they wrote? Very very cool.

  • Now THAT's guitar playing - Dicky Betts has an inimitable vibrato, very unique!

  • Whos' that kid next to him again? I saw them live few weeks ago.. I forgot what's his name?

  • @DenniszVideos That's his son Duane.

  • We were at Criteria Studios on your birthday long ago. I'm sorry we didn't invite you out. I realized you were there alone too late. Happy Belated Birthday!

  • what a kind man to take the time to show the rest of us...yeah historic figure...

  • He also wrote Blue Sky, another great song and great duet with Duane.

  • A God

  • this is amazing stuff! tis video just changed my whole way of playing

  • #1 best travelling song in the world! "Neal's Fandango" is right up there, too. Cool runnings!

  • It was great seeing Dicky play again, I am pretty sure they invented that sound.

    Great player and writers.

This video is great as well, thanks for sharing it with us

  • excellent stuff, dicky rocks i have listened to him all my life, btw who's the other guy in the video, he's a great player too.....learning from the master. is it dicky's son?

I look forward to more of these video's........ i hope you guys make some more

thanks again for the wonderful music

    dave

  • @drivers59 the other guy is his son duane, he is an amazing guitar player just like his dad.

  • MrHardrod2: Who the fuck are you that we care who your influences are? Nice screen name. Is that to attract other fags?

  • @weircali simmer down son

  • @weircali Relax dude. Screen name was an idea for a Porn Movie company me and some friends were thinking of doing before I got married. That's cuz I could get women that would be willing to do it to become porn actresses. But that all came to pass and it never materialized and I did not want to pursue it because I got married and my wife gave me a baby daughter. Of course as a Dad, I would wish it to happen to her so I would not wish it to happen to anyone. It's exploitation.

  • 1 of the best all time guitarists, 4 sure.

  • Well , I saw the ABB this past summer for the first time without Dickey after seeing them 20 times with him. Let me tell you it was not the same. They were very good but every tune was a half hour jam and with out tunes like this and Blue Sky and Ramblin Man it was not the same for me.I enjoyed seeing Derek play but I don't know if I'll go see them again.

  • Actually Iv heard that Dickey is a pretty nice dood. I mean sure he's got issues but look at the rest of the band, with a band that was literally a brotherhood loosing there leader then their bass player we would all be pretty pissy with each other too. Duane held the band togeather and Haynes is a fucking amazing guitarist but he knows just as well as dickey, Gregg, Jaiome and butch that he is NO DUANE. The ABB was really Duane's brain child and when he died and then barry right afterward...

  • the voice of reason FINALLY. thank you. even though he got kicked out of the abb, ya can't really underestimate his roll. if nothing else, the gibson tone that he demonstrates here - and in all his playing - should be considered before ya slag him for being an a-hole. "look at the rest of the band...."

  • It's really such a shame he ain't with the ABB any more and probably never will be. It's hard to look at them the same without him. He musta been completely out of control and impossible to deal with for them to boot him.

  • Where's this video from? Tabs to go with it? ;-)

  • Right on.... :o)

  • i like the sound! =]

  • Dickey is totally locked in and into even when making an instructional video

  • very nice!

  • who's the boy??

  • his son

  • @bulldogfight i think its his son

  • it's creepy how Bett's bends his head into the screen at like 1:07 and just gives you that stare.....

    the Dickey Betts Stare....

  • Wow this is Excellent. thanks for posting it..I'm still working on the harmony leads but will get it eventually. it sure beats trying to pick everything up by ear....thanks again!!

  • forrest duane betts... this is from guitar world mag i believe. im sorry the guy above didnt enjoy meeting dickey. i havent met dickey but i have spoke with duane many times. duane is so down to earth and an awesome guy. by all means walk up to him and say hello.

  • His name is Forrest Richard Betts

  • Sick thank you Dickey and Duane!!!

    Amazing!!!!

  • he didnt show us how to play Jessica he just played it

  • Well if you can't figure this song out by watching this video, try playing something easier.. It's not that hard

  • best tone ever

  • Thank you for posting this ,excellent lesson !!

  • god if i can only get that tone. does anyone here know how to get his tone? i have an sg

  • you have to use a bad ass amp that we could probably never afford

  • old marshalls' 60's 70's...everything cranked max, using volume on the guitar to adjust gain. 4 12 marshall cab. Of course Gibson Les Paul. Saw him live and all he had was a tubescreamer.

  • @lazloleaf

I'm think'n Duane had the sustain factor poppin' before Forrest , imho

  • i can play this note for note with the record.. and solo note for note with them and harmonize man do i love the fucking guitar.. and having the knowledge to carry this great shit onto the future

  • This is totally incredible- is it from a DVD or something? If so, I'm sold!

  • Jr. seems to have a little Joe Walsh in him judging from some of those faces ... love it!

  • Greg Allmanis fos. He's had his own problems and wouldn't let Dickey work through his. The band wouldn't have survived w/out the Dixster.

  • Saw Dickey in Peekskill, NY earlier this month, incredible show.

  • I saw him at a restaurant in Peekskill and he was a douchebag, lol hes an amazing guitarist though.

  • yea, i heard he was a ass and hard to get along with which is why they had problems with him in the allmans...on top of the drinking. Also, I have heard from their inner circle that everyone has to walk on eggshells around him. Dickey is a dick.

  • Every great guitar man I ever worked with was like that cause they are genius brain wise. Most of them are math freaks.

  • but a hell of a guitarist....

  • no doubt. And a wonderful songwriter

  • hey all posted shady streets by dickey betts check it out!

  • Dickey Betts is one of the best guitarists of all time IMO. He's up there with guitar rock GODS like Johnny Winter or Stevie Ray Vaughn or Dwayne Allman or Jimi Hendrix. He's one of my influences which is why my style is fashioned in the southern country rock style. I love this type of melodic, harmonic music which is IMO better than the trash that's coming out today. It's southern blues rock that rocks.

  • @MrHardrod2 duane allman kills all of those guys. just sayin.

  • @joshcaprai I agree Dude. Duane is definitely up there too. Sorry for not including him. He's actually the best part of the Allman Brothers band. Too bad he passed away so early in a freak motorcycle accident. Who knows if they would have created a lot more sweet classics like Jessica, Ramblin Man, In memory of Elizabeth Reed, Melissa, Lil' Martha, etc. He will always be missed and loved.

  • @MrHardrod2 I very much agree with everything you say about Duane for sure. And speaking of freak motorcycle accidents, how about Barry Oakley the ABB first bass player. That dude was awesome and I'm not even a bass player!

  • @Harryn58 Thanks brother. Peace. Yes, Barry Oakley is definitely a solid bassists and he was one of the solid Anchors that kept the songs together. Him and Butch Trucks and the other drummer.

  • @joshcaprai I think I did mention him but I spelled his name wrong. Dwayne instead of Duane. Sorry about the misspelling. And yes, Duane is a Guitar Rock God. He's just one of those people you wish kept going on playing. Sad and unfortunate, he left us suddenly to be taken in by the Lord upstairs. He is definitely missed. I also wondered if he didn't die then he probably would be rockin us with new tunes today.

  • @MrHardrod2 Once again, I have to agree with your take. I've always wondered if Duane, Jimi or Stevie hadn't been taken from us, if music would be different today because there's some really sucky music out there now! Hugh Johnny Winter fan as well.

  • @Harryn58 Johnny Winter rocks dude. Still alive and well, Jumpin Jack Flash, Rock Me Baby, Mean Town Blues, Highway 61 , etc. Good times for sure. Texas surely has some of the best rockin blues guitarist in the world.

  • @MrHardrod2 Buddy, you've covered all my favorites Winter tunes! I love'em all but that weird slide solo on "Mean Town Blues" is my favorite!! It's old but it's great! I never get tired of that song.! Appreciate the conversation very much! Rock on Bro!

  • @MrHardrod2

    TOO TRUE!

  • @MrHardrod2 That's debatable.

  • @MrHardrod2 Yea well not being a school teacher here, but its DUANE learn how to spell the fucking legends name. normally im the guy making fun of others for knocking folks spelling, but Duane is the man!!!!!!!!!

  • @MrHardrod2 same here!

  • man dickie betts is still awesome

  • For me he was the best part of the Allman Brothers as illustrated on their best album Brothers and Sisters.

  • Beautiful riff sounds wonderful when played as a harmony. This is music perfection and their tone is amazing.

  • Can someone please tell me why they kicked Dickie out.

  • Booze.......and just being a plain nasty individual to be around while on the road.......at least that' how the story goes.

  • Heard I story once how he and another member of the band would hole up in a motel and do drugs and the place would get so dirty they would have to change rooms..instead of letting house keeping come in...

  • The life of a rock-n-roller! Too bad though as I agree, I miss Dickie in the band too. There were some GREAT moments with Warren and Allen Woody (RIP) on stage. Back Where It All Begins is a really great record. I do have to give credit to the guys though, Hittin' the Note is really great too.

Kind of ironic that Betts gets kicked out as Greg had his battles with addiction too.....wish they'd reconcile one of these days!

  • @mrtonebone I heard that when he got too drunk, he forgets his lines on the guitar and misses some parts in songs when they played on stage. This was why they kicked him out of the band. He was alright when he was sober though. It's just that the alcohol got the better of him.

  • @MrHardrod2 It was also Dickey's refusal to alter the amp arrangement on stage that caused Jack Pearson to leave the ABB. Jack's hearing was starting to be affected and he asked Dickey to re-arrange the amps--Dickey refused, so Jack walked away. I think Jimmy Herring replaced Pearson for one tour, and he decided he didn't want a permanent slot, so they brought Warren back. Shortly afterwards, the three surviving originals voted Dickey off the island.

  • @MrHardrod2 Also--it's a real shame that Dickey's demons have always got the better of him--he is in fact one of the all-time greats. I caught him on some sober nights in the mid-1990s. He was an awesome player. But 40+ years of hard living catches up with a man. Maybe Gregg's liver problems will be a wake-up call--I certainly hope so.

  • @MrHardrod2 I've also heard stories about Dickey having issues with Govt Mule being on the same label as the ABB- I've heard that Dickey actually pulled a gun on Warren, but you know how these stories tend to get overblown or distorted- I believe about 1/2 of what I see and none of what I hear! LOL. I just really wish these guys could reconcile- they will ALWAYS be my favorite band, period. Life's too short fellas....hint....hint. We miss you Mr. Betts- COME BACK HOME SOON!

  • the story I heard is that his drinking was a constant problem that came to a head one night when he was unable to perform.

all the same, I think Dickie was dealt a bad hand, from being unfairly overshadowed by Duane to being ousted from the band he helped start. They're not as good without him IMO. All of their most memorable songs and melodies were Dickie's

  • What id really like to know is what amps they are using with those gibsons.
