You gotta Love VW. They never even once mention the 4 turbos on this ground breaking monster?! They also fail to show anything related to paint and its application to the vehicle. VW keeps quite a bit under wraps to keep the competition scratching their heads!
Another correction to the cosst to build, it's not 4 million pounds, it's 4 million dollars, which is considerably less than what 4 million pounds would be in dollars
did anyone notice that the car gets a little loose(slideways!!) during the straightaway shots just as it is near the camera...just around the 12:55 mark? good save though,even at that insane speed...
It costs VW over £4 million to make ONE of these. They're making a loss of at least £2 million on every one of these they sell. But they still do it as an engineering showcase. To make a point that it can be done and they're the only ones who can do it. And this is why this car is so unique. Sure the SSC Aero thing might be able to go faster but when you compare the amount of engineering, the Veyron is in a totally different league. It is more an aircraft than a car!
@afthefragile I am gonna go ahead and correct you there, what makes them go minus is the cost of development of the car and building the new factory. The individual cars do not cost 4£ Million to make each.
That would mean that for the 300 Veyron's they've made, they've lost 1,2 Billion Pounds just on the regular Veyrons, then another 600 million pounds on the Grand Sport and 120 million on the Super Sport. That is just not in the range of humanity.
@platinumguitar I'm just coating Clarkson there and to correct myself he mentioned it costs VW £5million to make each one. VW is big enough to deal with a few billion in loss as it makes around 80-100billion euros in revenue every year. Which is why such a car will not be built again for a long time because no other car manufacturer is big enough to afford such an expensive project to produce a car like the veyron. And that's why it is referred as the Concorde moment of cars.
@platinumguitar That is true for most other cars. Its the reason why the Lexus LFA costs over 350k and they're still not making any profit on each car they sell. Its not because it costs lexus more than the selling price to build each LFA but because they spent 9 years developing the car and invest too much into with the fancy F1 style engine, woven carbon fiber body etc...
But in the case of the Veyron, each car does cost 5million to build and they're selling it at a loss.
