  • Great song and an old favourite from 70's radio in Canada. I remember Ian Thomas playing this on SCTV as his brother Dave Thomas was in the cast. :)

  • I can easily picture Dewey Bunnell of America singing this song

  • Great song, so glad this song is being played regularly on XM SIRIUS's The Bridge which focuses on the mellower side of classic rock music

  • You stumped me on this one. I've never heard it. Maybe, its a "cut" off an album--have no idea.

  • i was 18 when it came...and went. still here with me though

  • In '73 Ian and his band played in our small town and I was fortunate to attend. It was my first concert and because it was such an eye-opener to see a true classic rock act that started my love for "live" music. Long live Canadian rock!!

  • THANKS FOR POSTING THIS SONG ,I WAS LOOKING FOR IT FOR 2 MONTHS ,I KEPT SEARCHING THE TITTLE ..FEELING OK MAMA ,BUT IT WAS NOT IT ...PAINTED LADIES

  • shoulda been a number 1 hit here in the U.S.!

  • It actually hit no. 34 in January 1974.. It hit number 1 in Canada...which explains why i heard it on a Calgary rock station last week!

  • Underated song! If anyone out there thinks that they can write a song like this......I want to hear it! I'm from Detroit and I know my music well. This song has stuck in my brain for years. Great tune. And oh yeah, those boys in Canada can produce great music....Neil Young, Burton Cummings etc.....

  • I'm grateful to be born in the same city as him.

  • Ian Thomas: "im gonna try to sound like Neil Young and America combined and see if i succeed"

  • zero dislikes ! Shuweet! I haven't heard this tune since 77' atleast and for some unknown reason the lyrics popped in my head today so I found it and jumped back into the wayback machine, weeeeeeee!

  • Brings back memories. Good and bad!!!!

  • Love this song! Too bad they reversed the picture for the picture of the album cover. He's a right hander and plays right handed.

  • His newer sound is cool too, I just heard some of it today, Canadians are awesome with music, please take over the US charts again and bump out the undesirables of 2011.

  • I always thought this was Neil Young.

  • Despite this, Ian Thomas will always be Dougie Franklin (''The Red Green Show'') to me. Kudos to him, though, 'cos it's a pretty good song.

  • Even if this song never reached number one, Its stood the test of time. That more then most #1 Hits can say.

  • Takes me right back to High School in The Bronx, listening to WNEW with my younger brother. Magic.

  • I love musicians that sound like Niel Young. Ian Thomas and the group America.

  • I remember this song very well. I was only around 13 when it came out, but loved it then, and do so now. Thanks for posting.

  • Hey Jen...You know what I'm talkin' about!Oh Yeah!!!

  • great videos... cant wait for more!!!

  • Fanfardon...that is the most normal thing, very cool. I remember Gus.

  • Not just Dave Thomas' brother, he's Dougie from 'The Red Green Show'.

  • What an awesome song, one of my all time fav Canadain songs from the early 70's. I saw Ian Thomas three times during The Runner tour , the best live venue to see Ian Thomas was the Ontario Place Forum. Killer. Check out Ian Thomas The Tuck Position. Thanks for the posting All the best Cumberland bc

  • I remember this being by Rick Springfield, anybody else remember that?

  • I thought this was a neil young song ! I heard it on the radio a long time ago and I could have sworn that was a neil young song. Crazyy

  • Looks like we found where Jack Black gets his fashion inspiration.

  • @BlueCarbuncle Jack Black fucked your momther to pay for your Meth addiction.

  • One would think this is America and Neil Young together! LOL

  • I love songs that came and went...makes them more memorable and enjoyable.

  • A great, forgotten song! :-)

  • Great song gaz loved the share

  • Just found out, his brother is Dave Thomas from SCTV! I heard it from a Canadian radio station. I like this song. Thanks for posting!

  • Ian Thomas is def NOT a one hit wonder. He's an excellent artist with great talent. I found one more of his solo releases lately.. the entitled "Add Water". from 1985. It's amazing.. ! the only bad thing is the shit quality of sound.. it;'s MPEG sourced possibly from a bad vinyl.. otherwise the album is perfect

  • Hearing this for the first time in 30 some years and still remember most of the words.....priceless

  • WOW! I bought the 45rpm when I was 12yo. I live in New England but would listen to WKBW Buffalo at night. It was in heavy rotation on that AM powerhouse. A song about wine, strippers & hookers...whats not to like!? Hard to believe it only cracked the top 40 as it did have good airplay on big New England Top 40 stations from that era like, WPRO, WRKO and WVBF. Thanks for posting!!!

  • i remember when he appeared on the 'great white north' on sctv in 1981 alongside his brother dave thomas(doug mackenzie)

  • Great song !!!

  • Us in Canada have quite a few gems and Ian Thomas is one of them. I actually live in Hamilton where he was born. I went to High School two blocks from The Grant Avenue Studios where he recorded alot of albums. He was friends with a friend of mine Jackie Washington, who was a Hamilton Institution. Sadly Jackie passed in 2009. Search Jackie Wahington and see what they have to say.

  • Great song!! Remember it fondly when I was growing up.......I from the Buffalo NY area. His live version on here is pretty darn good for his age!! I loved this song when I was growing up, it was very popular around here. Nice comment. Canada has many underrated singers!!

  • last I heard about Ian he was trying to be a stand up comedian....but that was a few years ago..........

  • @johnnyjohn58 Actually it was a music/comedy performance that combined Dave's comedic talent with a little of Ian's and Ian's musical skills with a little of Dave's. And it was a damn fine show. I met them both after and Ian still laughs about how people think his "Hold On' song belongs to Carlos Santana. He did that tune and this one in the show and he sounds great! Best $28 I spent in a long time.

  • @johnnyjohn58 He still performs his music. Google him and check out his website. He'll be playing in Toronto this winter. I'm sure he's touring to other venues.

  • Ian Thomas was not a one hit wonder.

  • U.S Charts!

  • @Fooblestheclown GOOD POINT F-Clown! Love those childhood memories!

  • pilot has to be considered the best Ian Thomas song, just for it's excitement alone, not to mention it's the song that brings you back to this great era

  • The best Ian Thomas song is Coming Home.

...but the waitress says she's had a hard day, so I'm down the hi-way

I'm tired of being alone and getting stoned to pass the time

I'm coming home, been away too long... and so on

  • Ah man, tough to nail down any one "best". I love this song, but I'd have to say "Touch Me" slides to the top of my list most often.

Touch me once like the rain on the river...

  • One of his I'd totally forgotten but checked out after this was Pilot. When I heard it, all sorts of memories of 9th Grade angst and fun came back, plus it's a good hummable song. I just never cared much for music that is done in the minor chords like this one. It's good, but give me something in a trebal clef, sing-along-able any day!

    Hey, to each his own.

For "Coming Home", I can listen to and sing along to in any mood at any time. His other music only appeals to me at certain times.

  • The first time I saw Ian was at our highschool Mayfield SS, outside of Brampton in 1973, I fell in Love and became an Ian Thomas Groupie. Ian played the Coronet alot, and we were always there when he was, never could get enough of him.

  • You're the first person I've attempted to reply to...still trying to figure that part out from your comment. Oh, well... Anyway, any help with Julie would be mucho appreciateo. BTW, have the bulldozer I sent to you shown up at your from door yet? LOL Rock on!

  • I remember listening to this at six in the morning when I had finished my paper route and was reading my comic at the corner store. 15 cents for a Spiderman and a nice shake which mother would have whipped me for drinking. But Gus, the owner thought it normal a young man earning his coin should spend it as he saw fit. And usually in the morning this song would play and for years I thought it the most normal thing.

  • @Fanfardon

Nice little snapshot from long ago(sad to say, the "long ago" I remember too).

What happened to the Guses of this world? Too many cozy stores have bitten the dust.

  • @Fanfardon ahhhh the good ole days

  • Such a great tune. Loved it so much as a kid in the 70's. Never forgot the words. Alot of people think this is 'America'. Great to hear it again after all these years.

  • wow.....This is so great to hear again. Thank you very much!

  • man! this song brings back the early 70's! haven't heard this in a looooong time!

I have been searching for the song, "Julie" from the album "Delights" but no one has posted it (yet?). Can you (or perhaps anyone else out there) help me out with this song? Thanks for any help you can provide!

  • Thanks alot thecastlestalker, I appreciate it! I will Dig through the mountain...lol Let me see if I can find it for ya! Got a Bulldozer...I may need one.....Lmao!

  • Definitely similar to the group America's sound.

  • So many Canadians produce good music...Americans have no idea how many of their favorites are from Canucks!

  • Probably the only song that features acoustic guitar strumming chords and a funky clavinet playing together!

  • this man is from my home town Dundas Ontario, Canada

  • Well, that's awesome,,,Hey if ya see him, say hi for me will ya???LOL. Thanks a bunch for the listen and comment, I appreciate that!

  • Not heard this in several years. I still love it. Thanks for the post.

  • Hey, that's great suewant! Great Canadian performer, isn't he? Gotta love the Canadian Stuff,,,Lol! thanks again!

  • Ian Thomas was no one hit wonder, his hits included:

    Come The Son,

    Liar,

    Time is the Keeper,

    Pilot,

The Runner (also recorded by Santana)

  • True, however this is based on US Charts, this is the only song, by Ian Thomas,,,,(go figure) that made the U.S top 40, The other tunes mentioned, did not make the chart, as mentioned above, They did in Canada, however! I suppose I had better stick to my own turf....Lol! Thanks for your comment and listen, CrashPQ, I do appreciate it!

  • amazing to me how many 1H1 are my favorite songs of all time!

  • Yep, same here! Thanks musicluver1958!

  • Another great Canadian singer/songwriter.

  • Thanks so much csp1977! Have a wonderful Christmas!

  • good 5* and merry christmas

  • Thanks Inky!

  • Dave Thomas's brother! A hoser, eh?

  • Now now.,..be nice ottlakerambler!

  • No problem. I noticed that most songs today have weak lyrical content. Fancy production has replaced good songwriting. Ian Thomas reminds me of when songs used to be written well with a lot of thought put into them. Great music should come first. Ian's writing is very under appreciated. Best Wishes, Vince!

  • Great songwriter and singer. I got to see him live. He was very funny and the show was great. He did all his hits! This is my favorite of his. He said that this song was the first song for him that went anywhere. I really like his vocals and lyrics. I wrote a song about taking a trip and searching for your destiny. It is called, "Where I Belong" by Vince Ravon. It is on youtube. Search for it. It is an acoustic pop song that was influenced by this song. Thanks Ian for your talent and music!

  • Thanks so much for sharing that Vince! And your music is awesome! A great influence- Ian Thomas is awesome! Thanks again!
