You have to win first place in the specific category that the item you're trying to win is in.

The computer AI isn't very smart in the free tournaments. You can sometimes win by just betting the minimum (15) the whole tournament. But basically what I did here was just bet the minimum until an opponent won more than me. Then I upped my bet to get back on top...then back to minimum bets. Works about 95% of the time. The computer likes to bet big, and lose alot!

It doesn't get overwhelmingly smarter, but it does feel like the AI is very soft when playing in the Free Tournaments.
