JFK asked his brother ... Where is Fort Jackson? Now that is fucking funny and shocking ... holy shit ... and I thought JFK was a whip! A soggy whip as it turns out, not particularly sharp whip ... even my dumb uncle knows where the fuck Fort Jackson is. How do you become President and not know where Fort Jackson is. Help me here.
If you knew as much as he knew about a multitude of subjects, you'd be surprised what things might slip by you. I've seen this with respected Presidents, who knew so much about so many things, but didn't have the time to ingest what the public learned about over time. Another thing is the world was more regional then and knowing about certain things could only be so homogenized. One of the more amusing Kennedy quotes is "What are negroes really like? I've never been around any."
@Nominay I was actually being sardonic in my comment as, I think, perhaps JFK was as well. No question that JFK was the brightest among the bright. He never bored me. And he was compelling at all times. And while all politicians are but puppets for the corporate and banking powers, the thing about JFK that I liked - there were less strings controlling him. That may explain why he was assassinated. He was mostly his own man.
Yet, I will agree that events in Birmingham, AL forced him to introduce the Civil Rights Bill in 1963 and his televised speech from the Oval Office in June of '63 still brings me to tears.
On JFK and racial issues read The Bystander by Nick Bryant. For President Kennedy the racial crisis in the U.S. was an embarassment in the area of foreign policy. It was hard to sell the former colonies of Asia and Africa on the ideals of America when photographs of police dogs attacking demonstrators were in newspapers all over the world. He was trying to hold things in place and, maybe, make a civil rights push in the second term. Love him or hate him, LBJ got it done.
About racially segregated schools on U.S. military bases did I hear JFK say he didn't care about the issue, just the poltical problems that would flow from how it was handled?
@jrrg100 Ive heard similar things said about him. From what I understand, JFK was more concerned with the global fight against Communism than he was about racial segregation. I think he felt it was a secondary issue and that it was too much of a hot potatoe to touch.
@jrrg100 He liked to separate his moral views from his political rationale. There did come a point though where he felt like "Damn it, I can't do this anymore", because Civil Rights was getting out of hand in '63. He was hoping to not work on the issue until he was reelected, but in the end felt he had to risk introducing the civil rights bill at a politically inopportune time.

@jrrg100 It was an embarrassment, among other things. LBJ got it done to ensure his legacy, not because of some social compunction.

Also, enjoyed listening to this conversation between the President and RFK discussing these matters.
