I love Pahud and each one of his performances, but in comparasing with Galways version (for me better), this one is just rythm, perfect pretty notes and tecnique but the music is gone. I don't know what it is but for me it's not the Pahud i hear every day!
It is just an opinion, don't take it personal Sir, you're still my favourite ;)
I think it's my personal taste but I think the flute version sounds much too delicate....doesn't have that soviet / percussive / rural sound that I often associate with the original Khachaturian violin concerto
well, of course it doesn't, we're comparing a violin sound to a flute. That's like saying the Prokofiev Sonata for flute & violin sounds better on violin for whatever reasons. But it just becomes a matter of personal preference, & what instrument someone plays is going to be a big influence. Although this is obviously a transcription for flute, i think the piece can still be appreciated for either instrument... the same with the Mendelssohn Concerto.
There is so much good about this, but I have to say that his rhythm is a tad usettling. Some of the dotted 16ths clearly cross over into the triplet realm. That SEEMS picky, but when combined with the strings of 16ths that are not swung.. but are.. hell, hard to say.. just not even enough for this piece. The first theme wants some DRIVE to it, and Pahud has decided on something else. Picky aside, it is an amazing performance. Bravo.
Nice performance. Thanks for posting this. Although this is originally a violin score, this definitely sounds like a flute concerto instead of a violin transcription.
Awesome beginning
