@nusquamesse1248 As much as I hate Karl Pilkington, An Idiot Abroad is a comedy show whilst this is a travel documentary, so you can't really compare the two.
@gelert456 Not comparing really. Though some writers have made the comparison. I was just noting how times change. Audiences choose chopped up moments of humiliating psuedo-reality served as self-effacing humour, rather than good old introspective documentation. Palin is traveling as much within himself with us, as he is traveling without.
@nusquamesse1248 I completely agree with you I don't see what the attraction of 'An Idiot Abroad' is, but it keeps the viewing figures relatively high, and thats what tv executives care about really, profit instead of quality. but hey I'm not judging each to their own.
the advise alan whicker gives is the best. if you are in a foreign country try not to speak their language but speak the one you are used to whatever language that might be.
This was such a great, memorable series. I made sure I never missed an episode when I watched it back in the early 90's on PBS--it really made you want to travel to all the exotic places in the world.
I saw this when it first aired in 88, at the age of 18. At the age of 32 I too took a trip around the world. I took 8 months to do it.... with Palins adventures in my mind all the way :)
@BucksSpur That's Alan Whicker. He was so famous in the UK 20 years ago, he didn't need an introduction. He worked for the BBC for many years and travelled all over the world.
I used to have this on video until my VCR died. I remember watch this in high school and wishing I could visit all those exotic places, including London. 20-odd years later and I've only visited a few of them but I've loved this show ever since.
this series made me fall in love with travel as a child, something I have carried with my for my whole life - thank you, Mr Palin, and to the uploader :)
This is a fantastic series - I recall being glued to the TV screen every week when it was broadcast in 1990. And this was all before the internet and GPS!! The whole series was even shot on 16mm film with a whole crew, producers etc etc - it must have cost the BBC a fortune! AMAZING!!!
Michael palin is a great comedian.

It's interesting that they show him leaving on the Orient Express at the beginning, /then/ show him meeting with people and planning.
