Should go down to brian walsh in wexford , He is unreal at making and repairing hurleys :) ..Also great vid as i want to also get into the business of making hurleys ina couple of years .. Thanks pal :D
Use the palm of hour hand when you finish shaping the boss - thatway you will not slip and hurt yourself so much.
However - you have great skill and great promise - you need to think about building a sander with two pullies at least 3 feel apart without any support underneath - this iwll give you the flexibility you need
hey man fair play for making hurl's jus not my type..also you know that the redness between the grain at 4:35 means that the ash is way too fresh for making..
@cash0033 iv been makin hurls for years. even if the timber is a bit pink u can still mak a grand hurl out a it as long as u give it a chanc ta dry out after, YOU KNOW NOTIN
jes man i don't know what you would call a good or bad hurley, i'm no hurleymaker either but i do know that De Brun is the only hurleymaker i can go that has good quality ash and will always make the hurl the way i want it..
To debrunsawmills, I got a few of your hurls for my club end they were absolutely sh*** I'd say ye have a load of brazilians making them for yee because they were the most inconsistent unbalanced batch of hurleys i've ever got!
just goes to show what you know bout hurl's if your source for gettin em is your club.. i'd like to see the lovely balanced hurls you make!.. brazillians hardly! come visit some time you'd be very welcome!!
hey man.. your bandsawing is delaying you big time. your 1 inch blade is too tick and can't take the curves. 80% of your sawing is away from the line. try 1/2 inch blade.. and try to do something bout the rubbish music doesn't fit man!..
Hurley makers are true legends of Ireland. They are the unsong heros of hurling. I prefer an offaly style hurl myself, to your cork style. Great video.
does the wood have to be ash (is there a GAA rule on it?)being in Australia its hard to find. im going to give either blue or red gum a go because its bloody strong ad pretty heavy. or maybe willow like the cricket bats are made out of. i haven't found a heavy ash one yet that i like. do you reckon they will work? any tips for making them?
It is a rule....along the lines of "The hurley stick (the hurley) must be made of ash" or something besides ash is used because its bending so it won't crack like a board when you hit a sliotar. Willow might not work because cricket bats a thick enough and thats why they don't crack...Im not sure about gum but give it a go anyway!
your trying something that has been tried and tested by experts 100's of times and all have failed misserable.. there will never be a replacement to the ash hurl. if your looking for a hurley that is heavier just get them specially make by your hurleymaker.. best hurleymaker De Brun Hurleymakers co.cork 0872115727
am what is the tool u use for shaving the wood and also what u use to shape and round the handle etc..also ne chance of a 1 showing how to hoop a hurley wel wb
i fix hurleys and its not that hard...but you do need the right type of glue..i use Trans7 clear or sticks like sh*t..from my own experience they are the 2 best glues for hurley fixing..the hardest thing is putting on the brace(splice tight so it holds the crack even tighter together and thats not even the hard....if you want me to make a video to show how its done just reply
@chriserloughran its not a hurley if its made of timber
