Just got one of these, and damn. They sound amazing, and put in the damping ring, and it kills all the unnecessary tones, and it sounds SO good. ( If tuned properly XD )
first pause the video, then press 2 : to hear the first test, press 4 to hear the second test, and 6 for the last ... there are differences, but to be honest.. not so much at all ... i think a pillow inside the bass drum sounds
I'm trying to find the perfect replacements for my bass drum's stock heads, and this seems to be a great batter head. Can anybody recommend a good resonant head to go with it?
The dissapointing problem i always seem to have is... the plastic holding in the foam ALWAYS cracks and shatters... the foam always ends up falling out... same thing keeps happening with the R-emad... the foam insert tore in half and flapped about.... (all installed professionally the second time with same result)
Idk what they used for a microphone, but it sucks.. The difference between the thin to wide ring is huge.. Easily one of the best bass heads out there.. The 2 ply with wide ring is pretty much spot on for any fast hitting metal music type.. love this head..
@Rushfan551 no it works a little better than the pillow. because ur only dampening the head, the drum can vibrate to its fullest, resulting in no loss of volume
@Rushfan551 sorta.. It acts more as a tone control kind of.. It focuses on low or high (mostly high) end noises (depending on the setup) and quiets or gets rid of it.. I still recommend a pillow for this head.
So I just got a set of Evans heads for my 4 peice kit to replace all the Remo's I had before. I got a Coated EMAD, Coated G2's for the toms, and a EC2 Snare batter and Hazy 200 reso. My drums have never sounded better. No more Remo. I'm all for Evans.
Using this head enables me to use Quite a bit less muffling in my bass drum. I have nothing against my batter head. All that's in my bass drum is a rolled up blanket against my Resonant head. EvansPercussion you should make the EMAD2 available in white coated as well!
You are not going to hear a striking difference because it's same head, same bass drum and same tunning in all three. Only thing changing is the ressonance; it dies out with the rings, while they provide more "punch". Even so, it is nowhere close as noticeable as it would be live.
They do not sound the exact same, but anyone watching this video and saying there's a huge difference is just trying to look smarter than they are. Trust me.
if you think they sound the same, listen to them in person and THEN say that they sound the same...I love this drumhead, but I prefer the EMAD2...that thing is GODLY
I used to love the two ply Emad, but then I switched to the EQ3, liked it more, than finally made my mind up with the Aquarian Super Kick II. I have a ec2 on my toms, and a remo CS dot two ply on my DW edge snare, and my kit sounds awesome!. My major problem with the Emad2 was after not so much use, that plastic ring holding the foam on would split, and would cause a lot of rattle. EQ3 was great, no problems there, but Super Kick II is by far the best. People either love it or hate it!
@gddrummer13 Lol. You are clearly uneducated. I've never found an Evans head that truly pleased me, but I've yet to find a Remo head that DOESN'T please me. No company sucks ass.
I think the people who think they sound the same, have crappy speakers. Get some reference headphones or speakers and you will definitely hear all three different sounds. I personally think the emads are the best bass heads.
@goldenchild4942 Nah man, it's all those people who play drums in their garage with concrete walls and don't wear earplugs :) I have pretty lame speakers...the difference is very obvious.
of course it sounds the same, because the head stays the same, also in its tuning. means every three times its been hit, it produces the same tone. the different foams just cut away the overtones and shorten the sustain. accordingly theres an emphazise on the kick/ attack. so you can clearly hear a difference between attack, sustain and overtones, well at least i do. the tuned tone of the bassdrum stays the same.
the very last one with the thicker foam definitely sounds different, but the first two sound very similar, great bass head :) add a pillow or bunched up sheet and this sounds amazing :)
@louis5950:22 the sound is very open. there is a light attack and clearly noticble resonance, which is typical for bass drums with no muffling. 0:40 the low end is much clearer. The attack is a bit more defined and much of the mid rage resonance is cut. 1:00 The attack is very clearly defined. More of the high to mid resonance is cut giving the drum a defined attack with a oomph kind of low end. Basically the bigger the ring you add, the less upper end resonance is noticable.
@DysnomiaBlue I keep Pestering Evans About it, so Now I'll have to harass them @ Namm an Musikmeese about making me a custom one, But I think we Are Not the Only ones that would Like them to Offer this Oynx in a 24" to the Market, I Already have one on my 20" kick but I'm Tired of Using the Coated E-mad on my 24",But Don't get me wrong, I like it..but I Really Like having that Dark Body fat Tone with the Oynx's and Works Specular for the Music We Create..and yes Aesthetically it looks great..
I have tried two of these, and that cheap flimsy plastic retaining ring keeps breaking... I am going to Aquarian on my next change out. Such a shame, because I really like the sound I get with the smaller ring in place...
So, the bass drum pedal @ 1:46 logo is covered up, but before the viewer can read on the pedal that it's a DW? Lame. I don't think this video would want to make people by buy a DW pedal, so frickin show it!!!
@Sophenomenos In this video, they sound way more similar than they do in real life, I couldn't tell ya why. I've got the Onyx myself, and believe me, there's substantial difference between the three configurations.
@Sophenomenos you need some ears with good function. same tone, only gets darker with damping and shorter with less overtone. But there is difference!
@Sophenomenos they do sound similar. if you were playing it though, you could notice the difference. I have it on my bass drum, its great if you are looking for a nice studio type of sound
@Sophenomenos theese are all things that you can only really hear and feel when you play it. i dont evcen kow why they make theese videos. marketing i guess.
@Metallicalism86 That album was made with drum triggers. The only way you'd be able to get it to sound a little bit like it would be with any batter head, tuned loose, with a blanket or something up against it.
@endtymeelement I personally don't like the superkick II, superkick I, or anything from aquarian in general. I feel that those two heads are too muffled.
@LTLfilms aquarian, less hassle, lasts a long time, sounds great. The combo I have is the super kick 2 and a regulator with tithe port hole on the side with an empty bass drum. It sounds great and you can really mess with the tuning. I play jazz but the super kicks are good for anything.
Did you check the reso head? If not, you probably have it too tight. You should have the bass drum tuned as low as possible while still maintaining resonance ( unless you play jazz ), If not just keep messing with it.
I read reviews on this head and most people said that the plastic breaks off and I bought the head because it sounded awesome. Two weeks later and the plastic started to break off. not a good head if you're playing out a lot.
i wish they compared the EMAD, EMAD COATED, EMAD ONYX, GMAD, and EMAD2. sounds like much but unless you can find 5 bass drums, tune them up, and then compare, there is no way of telling the difference.
whats good about evans is that it really sounds, i bought a bass drum batter a couple of months and i couldnt hear anything else than my bass drum, i had to fix that problem but man, evans rule... shame the coated heads are only a paint on the head and not texture the plastic like rmv does...
