This is the thing you know, its just these guys' opinions. Sure they have loads of experience, a lot of knowledge, but they aren't perfect. I always take their words with a big grain of salt, but sometimes i find them to be just plain wrong. Its really mostly because they dont do the most controlled testings, they just put their cars through the paces and go with what they're feeling, a great mindset if you want to buy a nice car, but maybe not the nicest for you.
true.. it does drink petrol, but that's the characteristic of rotary engine. And somemore, it's a sports car so got to give and take. I mean it wasn't designed to be fuel effficient anyway.
i owned this car and it was not my first rotary. i babied this car, warmed it up, revved it before turning off, no synthetic oil, only premium gas, red line regularly, no short trips etc... @ 20,000mi it got cracked apex seals. i got the performance of a mild v6 with the mpg of a v8 and the reliability of a yugo. this thing is horrible even its pros dont overcome its cons. i got a new engine under warranty and sold it for an s2000 now i'm happy.
Good for u.. S2000 is also one of my favourite cars too. And I'm sorry to hear abt your loss. But that doesn't mean RX8 is a lousy car I feel. The newer models are more reliable and better. Sometimes, it comes down to the year of the model and a bit of luck. Having said that, rotary isn't meant for everybody. My friend's civic i-vtec engine also have problems in the 1st year.
What a tool. I have a hard time respecting Clarkson's opinion when he says this is the best car he's driven all year, then takes it back because he says it's twitchy on a wet road with the tires, and this is after he's driven it on a wet track and said it was the best.
@CylonJason I agree. Maybe it was because the tyres were worn out, or that Jeremy Clarkson can't handle a sports car in real-world conditions. Who knows!
So far, only the 04-05 models have some problems. The newer ones are better and more reliable, especially the facelifted versions. So far, there are quite a number of RX8 (some pre-fl) around the world having mileage over 100k without having to overhaul the engine. I'm pretty sure if one understand rotary engine and know how to take care of it, then it shouldn't be of a problem.
Yea everyone's noticed the wet track however if u watch the Vid he destroys the tread on the tires going around the track and who knows HOW many takes that did to get that shot? So by the time Jeremy drove it on the road the tires were prob close to shot. The RX8 is lacking in Tq but it's s drivers cars for the track;I love that Mazda squeezed 238HP out of a N/A motor vs 255 out of a turbo one. This was a step in the right direction. I can't wait till the next gen n another 4-8 years! Love my 8!
its funny that he says the car was great until after the track run he drove it on the road in the rain. it was obviously raining when he was driving it on the track as the track is very wet.
I would recommend you to buy the 2012 mazdaspeed 3 Its definitely affordable and worth it for everything you get from it great horsepower turbocharged and gas ain't bad on it.
I bought mine when I was 18, but it was my 3rd car. They are amazing vehicles, but if you're not very mechanically inclined and/or can't afford premium gas at a rate of 16city/22hwy then look elsewhere. I'll never regret my purchase but you have to be dedicated to buy and put the time into learning everything rotary.
the RX-8 drives me nuts. this thing seems just 50+hp short of being a killer package. it's wankel is getting 178hp/L as is, so if they increased displacement by just 30% to just over 1.7L, it would produce around 300hp. why didn't they do this? was it gas mileage, as the current setup is already thirsty? would there be mechanical problems with bigger wankel components?
There have been many rumors of Mazda working on a 1.6L rotary dubbed "16X." Of course this is purely speculation; though Mazda has claimed they will never stop development of the rotary engine. The problems with a 1.6L are numerous, mainly in the form of gas mileage and emissions. Maybe sometime in the future we will see the RX-8's replacement with a sky-activ rotary
@MrRectalRanger 1.6L would be better with fuel than the 1.3L and the use of a Sky active transmission would help also the I-looping brake system to store HP would also make a hug MPG improvement. If you tweaked the motor and elongated the housing/rotors you could improve MPG, but Emissions are a tough bit for the car as you stated. Only with direct injection and laser plugs could the car lower emissions but what cost to the consumers would that be?
The RX8 is a different car from the RX7, it doesnt have the torque of the older model because it has no turbo installed, due to more strict regulations, about gas emissions. A joke? No.. It delivers a lot of torque from 5000 rpm all the way up to 9500. Its very nice looking, it has superb handling and when you want to go sideways, it is pure heaven...
we were driving one of these to are house and i have to say it was one of the most fun u can have in a car, it handles soooo good i like the looks, but sadly my friend's 2004 z71 4x4 5.3 v8 ext cab silverado ate this thing alive made me mad but it is still way to fun lol
@sasserdave For the millionth time, the RX-8 wasn't designed to be a drag car. It won't win many races in a straight line. But take it to the track and it will out-perform cars that cost 3x the price.
@MrRectalRanger 1 did i say it was a drag car no, 2 did i say it couldint handle no, 3 the people that drive these and any other car 90 percent of the time race on the street so thats were it falls short off being great but it doe's handle good but it cant even pass or beat a full size truck so conclusion great car just need's more power i cant find anything wrong with it other then the power it lacks,
@MrRectalRanger oh yea because that guy and his friend just so happen to have a race track in their back yard that they can go to! thats about how much sense your comment made. not saying your dumb or anything like that at all, just saying think about it for a sec. i doubt that guy and his friend are gonna go to a track just to have some fun.
@t8trg8tr the new mazdaspeed3 has 32 more HP than the new RX-8, it can get to 0-60 MPH faster than the RX-8, i think it the hot hatchback looks 100% better than the RX-8 and my most important feature, ROOM! I can fit two mid sized surf boards in the back when i put the back seat down and its a 4 door, the rx8 has 4 seats but no room in the back and theres no way you can fit a surfboard inside. Its true the RX-8 is a RWD so it handles better than the speed3 but thats the only point the RX-8 wins
@PrivatePenis Yeah that's all true. if I was looking for just a driving car I'd go with the RX-8, but if I was going for a daily driver I'd go for the speed3
@t8trg8tr idk the speed3 only comes in manual so as a daily car it is kinda hard to drive lol, im still deciding on which car i will buy in April. Im thinking either the 2012 speed3 or the 2012 V6 camry but im still open to other similarly priced performance cars if you have any suggestions? NO MUSTANGS
If this had a piston engine it'd be one of the all time greats. But by Mazda being stubborn it still comes with the inefficient, torqueless and hard to work on rotary. I can deal with bad MPGs if Im getting good power but not for a guttless motor that hardly anyone can work on. If this car had even the MX5s no thrills 4cyl Id buy it in a heart beat. But I wll not own a rotary car for a DD
The rotary engine is a huge part of Mazda's history. In 1991 the Le Mans race banned the rotary engine because of its significant weight advantage. No, they're not the most efficient engines. But they put out huge hp numbers for their size. I do all my own work on my RX-8 - they're much simpler than piston engines because they have so few moving parts. You have obviously never driven an RX-8 or you would understand why Mazda stands behind the rotary engine.
@gwillo5000 i bought the sport package brand new for 30k back in 07. ive seen the same year in good condition going for the price you can get a 93 FD which is around 14K.
@ninhaxable Well im 16, nearlly 17 so getting 14k is going to take a while but iv seen used ones with about 30k miles on it and including insurance its about 8k
@TheWhitenissan the only thing a rx7 has is a twin turbo, turbo charge a rx8 you see numbers much better than the stock twin turbo FD. The rx8 has an amazing built sturdy chassis and can handle a lot more than it is. So the lack of money you're seeing between the two is because the rx8 is not twin turbo.
@ninhaxable not really, the 7 was meant to go fast on a track, the design flows beautifully and the 8 couldnt decide whether it should be a sedan or sports car. no comparison
No, you're the one that is wrong. Or have you not seen what an '8 can do around the track? The sequential turbos in the '7 made it competitively priced with Porsches. A turbo'd '8 with a moderate tune can easily produce 300wrhp - significantly more than the '7. Yes, the '8 was geared towards a different audience. It blended practicality with sportiness. It's a true 4-door sports car.
@TheWhitenissan watch Ultimate Tuner Rotary Battle - Rocket Rotary - Hot Version International. im sure you will change your mind of the rx8 and how well mazda really did on it. zoom zoom.
Agree with mrjab, ive heard these are common hard starters when hot, heard the bores get flooded and have to be tow started, and that engines may only last up to 50,000 miles, its common ya helmet
I have a 2011 RX-8 in silver, and everything Jeremy described in this video really is true!!!!!!! It is an amazing car, but I wish it had more power and better mileage... Otherwise it's a beast!!!!!!!
@rmeyer845 more power and better mileage???? dude the rx8 saves more gas than a hybrid and has more power than a v6 engine... from a 1.3..... mazda just made the impossible, possible.
Saves more gas than a hybrid? Dude. Mine gets anywhere from 17-23mpg. That's basically V8 premium gas guzzling. Though I'm not complaining - definitely worth it since it's such an amazing car.
@MrJab4309 And where exactly did you get that info? The engines certainly get stressed a bit more than conventional ones due to the nature of Wankel, but there is constant improvement based on the evolution of the design in all Mazda RXs. "Dying after a year"?!!? That's Youtube comments for you.
@bloodySunday77 this comes from my personal experience as a mechanic. I have replaced 3 RX8 engines with brand new factory wenkle engines. 3 different cars, all within 12-18months of the production dates
@MrJab4309 Have you looked through the RX forums to see how incredibly different user experiences are, and what the fault might be, from slow revs in a traffic jam to type of engine oil to fantasizing about being Colin McRae? Don't post comments that present three cases as a universal conclusion.
4 door coupes have existed for quite a while now...from 2004-07 Saturn built the Ion 3 and Redline which had the 4 door coupe and plenty of storage space, with a 2.0L Supercharged 4 cyl...
Get new Tires if they aren't good in the Rain Jeremy... You probably Shredded them on the Track anyways before Driving in the Rain... Duhhh... Genius...
My daily car is an RX-8 '04 plate 231PS. I'm guessing what Clarkson meant by "there's something about thses tyres" at the end there is that he used the same set on his drive home that he shreaded on that runway doing those power slides, and he will probably have left the traction control switched off on wet roads (the runway was wet so I assume so were the roads). If he had switched it back on, with decent tyres (and didn't drive like an idiot) he'd have no problem. I don't when I drive mine.
Mazda cars are tainted with high levels of Japan's nuclear disaster radiation. Think again before buying a Mazda car. This radiation, which includes the highly radioactive Plutonium-238, 239 and 240 will increase your risk of cancer, infertility and sperm damage.
Is there anyone know about urban consume this car ? How many km is it possible to go with car with full tank ? Pls share me about this car details. I like it and ı am thinking about to buy it. Thanks
@Mafia2786 just make sure you keep er warm and lubed up. always the highest octane. and ethanol blends are suicide. get your oil from mazda the mineral goodys.... thats a good start
@EllisEndye its because it makes its power higher in the rpm range and not down low like a v8 screw all that the rx8 and rx7s were made for the turns not straights
@EllisEndye the wankel engine is a beast. ive seen my friend with an rx8 with a mazdaspeed air intake actually beat a mustang gt by a really long time :S
I don't understand his comment at the end about the rain ... I live in Portland Oregon and commute daily in mine... I welcome the rain... I pass and pass all the suv's and sedans. I have never felt it slip in the rain, I love my 2006 RX8 - Shinka. :)
The rotary engine embodies many of the things that Mazda stands for. If they take their line of rotary engine powered cars and decide to offer them with traditional piston engines, then it just defeats the whole purpose. Car enthused people see an RX-8 and know it is unique not only because of its looks, but because of what has under the hood. Pistons and cylinders would ruin this image and make rotor heads feel disgraced.
@hunghuge12 if it had a normal engine I wouldn't be calling it an RX8, I'd just call it a mazda 8. they would completely spoil the RX series if it had anything but a rotary.
@trezza181 I see what you mean now. Maybe a mazda8 would be a cool car? I like the ideas on the RX-8 but I just couldn't justify the fuel bills. I do high miles or I would already have one. They sound great and go well but last time I used one for a week I got 18mpg. It was a fun week though.
@JekHawkins you got what i was saying lol i hate it when Japanese car manufacturers give Americans watered down versions of their awesome cars that's why i said true Japanese
@zombiesurfer1 I think that in raw fun, a Nissan GTR would disappoint you (it weighs 1750kg and has enough traction control to keep an unleashed 2005, 990cc Ducati Desmosedici GP5 from destroying you)
this is a really nice car. my friend has one, and at first he thought it was turbo, after i checked it out, i saw it wasnt. even thought i have a 05 srt4 modded out pretty good, there is just something about this one i like. nice car.
I plan to get a Mazda Rx-8 but I don't know if I should.. To anybody who owns a Rx-8, could you tell me the pros and cons about this car? Is the car spacious? Does it save gas? Stuff like that Lol.
@SpunkyMunky0292 I had an RX-7 ( got it for about 9,000 used ) it handled OK, it was a convertable and had nice acceleration. Didn't save much on gas though ( its a sports car! ). If your hearts set on it then get it. But I warn you, it's not the cost of a sports car that kills it's the *hidden costs* insurance, plate, ect.
@SpunkyMunky0292 I bought mine (231 hp) 5 years ago and I can say - Pros: Definately great looks, excellent handling (47-53% weight distribution), nice gear ratio and feeling, great steering wheel feedback and more engine-reliable than an RX-7. No problems for me so far.. Cons: High fuel consumption at the higher revs, high oil consumption (some oil goes directly to the rotors for better lubrication) and not enough torque until 5.500 rpm. The engine "wakes up" from 5.500 to redline (9.500)

@TheWhitenissan and porcshes we're whooping up on it like it was baby shower
UnitedStatesOfSpange 3 weeks ago
@TheWhitenissan the only thing a rx7 has is a twin turbo, turbo charge a rx8 you see numbers much better than the stock twin turbo FD. The rx8 has an amazing built sturdy chassis and can handle a lot more than it is. So the lack of money you're seeing between the two is because the rx8 is not twin turbo.
ninhaxable 1 week ago
@ninhaxable not really, the 7 was meant to go fast on a track, the design flows beautifully and the 8 couldnt decide whether it should be a sedan or sports car. no comparison
TheWhitenissan 1 week ago
@TheWhitenissan

Otherwise it's a beast!!!!!!!
rmeyer845 1 month ago
@rmeyer845 more power and better mileage???? dude the rx8 saves more gas than a hybrid and has more power than a v6 engine... from a 1.3..... mazda just made the impossible, possible.
HARDBODYRALF 1 month ago
@HARDBODYRALF
Saves more gas than a hybrid? Dude. Mine gets anywhere from 17-23mpg. That's basically V8 premium gas guzzling. Though I'm not complaining - definitely worth it since it's such an amazing car.
MrRectalRanger 1 month ago
Oh, how subjective taste is... I find it beautiful. And let's face it, it's not an atrocity as Clarkson says it is.
bloodySunday77 1 month ago
the engines in the RX8 also have a nasty habit of dying after about a year or so, depending on how aggressive you are.
MrJab4309 1 month ago
@MrJab4309 And where exactly did you get that info? The engines certainly get stressed a bit more than conventional ones due to the nature of Wankel, but there is constant improvement based on the evolution of the design in all Mazda RXs. "Dying after a year"?!!? That's Youtube comments for you.
bloodySunday77 1 month ago
@bloodySunday77 this comes from my personal experience as a mechanic. I have replaced 3 RX8 engines with brand new factory wenkle engines. 3 different cars, all within 12-18months of the production dates
MrJab4309 1 month ago
@MrJab4309 Have you looked through the RX forums to see how incredibly different user experiences are, and what the fault might be, from slow revs in a traffic jam to type of engine oil to fantasizing about being Colin McRae? Don't post comments that present three cases as a universal conclusion.

Mindzinsuk 3 months ago
OK I get the rotary thing but why don't they offer this with a normal engine too? Maybe a modified version of the supercharged 4 from the mazda 6?
hunghuge12 3 months ago
@hunghuge12 Because then it wouldn't be an RX-8
MrRectalRanger 2 months ago
@MrRectalRanger How does that work then?
hunghuge12 2 months ago
@hunghuge12 mazda.com/mazdaspirit/rotary/
Read up ^^^
The rotary engine embodies many of the things that Mazda stands for.
MrRectalRanger 2 months ago
@hunghuge12 if it had a normal engine I wouldn't be calling it an RX8, I'd just call it a mazda 8. they would completely spoil the RX series if it had anything but a rotary.
trezza181 2 months ago
@trezza181 I see what you mean now. Maybe a mazda8 would be a cool car? I like the ideas on the RX-8 but I just couldn't justify the fuel bills. I do high miles or I would already have one. They sound great and go well but last time I used one for a week I got 18mpg. It was a fun week though.

I plan to get a Mazda Rx-8 but I don't know if I should.. To anybody who owns a Rx-8, could you tell me the pros and cons about this car? Is the car spacious? Does it save gas? Stuff like that Lol.
SpunkyMunky0292 3 months ago
@SpunkyMunky0292 I had an RX-7 ( got it for about 9,000 used ) it handled OK, it was a convertable and had nice acceleration. Didn't save much on gas though ( its a sports car! ). If your hearts set on it then get it. But I warn you, it's not the cost of a sports car that kills it's the *hidden costs* insurance, plate, ect.
ThomasCreel 3 months ago
@SpunkyMunky0292
I got a 04 GT 6spd
Pros: 9k redline (7k for auto), extremely smooth acceleration, handling, rwd, room for 4, looks.
Cons: lack of TQ, mpg, could be faster (more hp), engine's reliability (less reliable than the Rx-7's)
Spacious? hmm I'm 5'11 220lbs and I fit in the rear seats fine, leg room is a little cramp though.
MPG: I get anywhere from 12mpg to 22mpg, city driving hurts a lot. The auto version comes with less HP but better mpg.
Before buying this car research! rx8club.com
stichy420 3 months ago
@SpunkyMunky0292 I bought mine (231 hp) 5 years ago and I can say - Pros: Definately great looks, excellent handling (47-53% weight distribution), nice gear ratio and feeling, great steering wheel feedback and more engine-reliable than an RX-7. No problems for me so far.. Cons: High fuel consumption at the higher revs, high oil consumption (some oil goes directly to the rotors for better lubrication) and not enough torque until 5.500 rpm. The engine "wakes up" from 5.500 to redline (9.500)
