I first heard a Sid version of this on my Commodore 64 back in the late 80's and fell in love with this music. But I never remember hearing it in the movie.
The music still sounds quite good, and is probably the best thing in the film. The rock elements in the music are still very unique-sounding and distinctive.
I wish someone would search their old VHS tapes and upload the actual music video which was released to TV stations when the film came out in '84. It's never made it onto any BR or DVD to the best of my knowledge :(
Google "Billy Idol swears this is his favorite TOTO album"
The movie is alright but not faithful to the novel, the soundtrack is better than the movie itself. I prefer the mini-series and it's superior sequel Children of Dune over this messy adaptation, i think Lynch was the wrong man for the project. I'm glad there will be a new 4-part big screen Dune movie coming soon from a quality french director who cares for the material unlike Lynch.
@Johnlindsey289 Or course, i had the benefit of having seen this movie in the theater as a kid long before ever reading Frank Herbert's novel, and it left an impression on me, to say the least. I still think it's a pretty good film in it's own right, but i am glad they are remaking it for theatrical release.
Did you had any Dune toys? what did you think of the mini-series and sequel? The new movie coming soon i hear will have 4 parts similar to how LOTR was three parts or Kill Bill in 2 parts as i think Elijah Wood or Daniel Redcliff should be Paul. Would you compare Avatar to Dune? i mean they are Sci-fi/fantasy epics about outcasts in love with an unplanet woman, strange worlds, greedy guys, tribes who rebel and power over a substance? Cameron is a fan of the novels.
@Johnlindsey289 Yes, my brother and i had all of the Dune toys. I still have a few of the figures around here somewhere actually. lol. I thought the miniseries and the sequel, while faithful to the books, kind of suffered a bit from the low budget cgi effects, tbh. Avatar and Dune do share a lot of similarities and i really hope the new movie is more faithful to the book than Lynch's version was.
I was only 3 years when this movie came out but my big brother Neil who was 11 years old saw this in theaters and he enjoyed it as well as the books. I got into the books when i was 12 years old at my junior high library and loved them, such a unique inspiring work of Sci-fi/fantasy literature but then when i rented the movie, i thought it was enjoyable but fair compared to the book. There's also The Matrix, Star Wars, Stargate, Fifth Element and Dark City are similar movies too.
@sondano Indeed and it's still a cult classic as of today, but by rather crappy I was trying to mean obscure or underrated. If only youtube comments had an "edit" option. :/
Would you compare this movie, the mini-series and it's better sequel and books to films like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds (Warriors of the Wind), The Matrix, Avatar, Stargate, Star Wars, Star trek, The Fifth Element, Flash Gordon, and Dark City for similar movies?
This soundtrack? but some of those movies i mentioned like Avatar and The Matrix are similar to Dune you gotta admit. Did you know James Cameron is a fan of the novels and despises the 1984 movie yet loves the mini-series and sequel? it's a fact. Even The Fifth Element had some Dune influence in it since Besson is a fan of the original source material as is Roland Emmerich for Stargate.
@Johnlindsey289 Of course it is! Doesn't look like it but Dune has influenced in many types of media even in videogames (check out Snatcher). Too Bad David Lynch resents this movie so much....
Well this movie is alright as a Lynch movie itself but bad as a Dune movie, the soundtrack is better than the movie itself even though i still enjoy this version of Dune and the Mini-Series plus the superior sequel. The new 4-part big screen Dune movie should be cool, even though there is already a new generation's Dune called Avatar. You gotta admit about similarities of Avatar to Dune? Avatar in not the animated Airbender show but the James Cameron movie.
@Johnlindsey289 i think that for most of the movie the lynch's dune get's a lot right especially when you see the stuff that didn't make it in to his theatrical cut. and avatar had similarities to dune the way that a thomas kincade painting has similartities to claude monet.
And do you think The Matrix is the same thing like Dune? i mean the Wachowski Bros are fans of the Herbert novels. You can tell similarities such as outcast to become messiah Paul and Neo, Trinity is like Chani, Morpheus is like Gurney or Duncan Idaho, Oracle is like Reverend Mother, Agent Smith is like the Harkkonens including the Baron in one body and more. The energy in The Matrix is like The Spice and both Neo and Paul got their eyes out but could see.
@Johnlindsey289 If you are looking for influences then you should look into the similarities between dune and estern/arabic culture as well as clear inspiration from the Bible (the messiah; leading the People to the promised land, etc.). What makes Dune such an inspiring story is its inception of a timeless tale into a futuristic universe. The film though suffers from the near absence of inner dialogues which make for half of the books. I give it an A+ for the aesthetics though. Unforgettable.
Let's not forget Dune is also inspired by world history such as Caligula's reign, Lawrence of Arabia and of course the story of Pocahontas since Paul is basically John Smith while the parents and Harkonnens were settlers exploring the new world and exploiting it for a substance, the Harkonnens including Baron consider freman to be savages, Chani is like Pocahontas in being a different kind of girl that falls for Paul and of course the Freman are a mix of Arabs/Native-Americans
@Johnlindsey289 Avatar is just Dances With Wolves in space with giant smurfs. The Fremen were not the Atriedes enemy at any point really. Besides, Dune came well before Dances with Wolves ;)
@Johnlindsey289 And I like GITS much more too, though story wise I wouldn't really want to compare GITS and the Matrix all too much. That's just me. GITS Tank fight FTW, absolutely mind bogglingly and intricately created in it's subtleties.
And you don't think Avatar is the same as Dune? i mean both deal with an outcast to become messiah, both have exotic unique worlds, both have beautiful alien women who fall for the main character, both have taming of the wild, both have a similar substance that is precious, both have tribal alien beings who are rebels, and that sort of thing. Cameron is a fan of the novels of Dune did you know that and that was one of the inspirations for Avatar.

Thanks to this amazing piece I discovered novel Dune and it was pretty interesting (and I'm not a reader).
And part from 3:15 is really beuatiful... bringing me some great memories. This is why I love music from Toto so much. It always work that way.

Unlike novels, this movie was really bad. but the music was unbilievably great.
otakasama 10 months ago
@otakasama Not really, David Lynch's movie was graphic and immersive, it's a good film even with the sum up & rewriting of a bit of the story.
The mini series are much like the books, but you loose the Lynch effect :)
The movies, the books, the music, it's a global piece of art ;)
Rozargh0 8 months ago 3
@Rozargh0 The David Lynch movie absolutely nailed the look and feel of the Dune universe while taking far too many liberties with the story.
The mini-series had a much better script but the production design was pretty terrible.
If only it were possible to somehow combine the two.

The 1984 film fits the soundtrack so well. I'd rather it be the mess it is than a boring-by-the-book film. The style of the film works so well.
