I actually love the concept of this advert it works well on the conception of temptations! However I did not get the kilt one either also I feel that when they showed the pudding then something else then the pudding I think it would of worked better with just the pudding at the end.
Ugh. I initially googled "Does anyone else hate the Gu advert?" I detest it and hate being bombarded with it constantly on 4oD. It's an artsy fartsy Ingmar Bergmanesque montage of monotonous dullness. I hate the works of Ingmar Bergman. The music is just psychotic and the composer belongs in a mental institute. Commision the filming of paint drying next time - in black and white - for your own self congratulatory and delightful irony. Ugh. I'm having a yoghurt for afters.
@HoratioMoonraker Wow. I think your directing hate towards this that perhaps belongs somewhere else. I love how you say "artsy fartsy", does this mean you hate art in its entirety? I can't imagine what would possibly please you. As for the soundtrack, it implies curiosity, mischievousness, anxiety. It hits the spot entirely. Your comment is a pile of passive-aggressive, superficial bullshit.
@MJBkiwan No. I don't hate all art. Just the pretentious. As for your comment that the soundtrack; "hits the spot" is your opinion and not a fact. It is still quite awful. I'm sure it would be possible to compose music to evoke the wonder of a bowel movement but not why anyone on earth would want to. Now take your undergraduate 101 first term psychology (BA, not a repected BSc) and shove it up your bottled-watered; yoga stretched; feng shui arse-hole.
This is a very charming advert. The song at the beginning; does it remind anyone else of 'Bonjour Paris!' from Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire? At least from about 8 seconds in for a short period? I always think so! Lovely advert none the less! x
Speaking as a consumer, not as a marketing or advertising professional (which I am not), I "got" the ad on the third time I watched it. What did it for me? The bubble wrap. If you put the buble wrap before the pudding, I think it would have worked better. But you know what? I love the ad! It made me think how simple and awesome it was, when I figured it out. The song fits it well!
This advert does not quite work. I realise the onus is on the viewer to make the connection between the things that are supposed to be hard to resist and gu being the one thing you should be encouraged to dive into, but i feel the links are either too short or too timid. I think conceptually this advert is good, however the execution is not strong.
Pretty poorly executed. Left me confused and had to put it together. It did however keep Gu in my mind, but made Gu a connection with confusion rather than delicious chocolate.
@ollieraison Seriously? I'm sure you'd have to be pretty dumb not to get it. To me, the quality of this advert is in the subtlety of the connection, and of course mixed with the incredibly well thought-out soundtrack. The advert is a shining beacon of hope that not all adverts have to be made to be understood painfully easily. If it was made easier to grasp, it would lose its quality in my opinion.
@MJBkiwan Unfortunately you would have to be pretty dumb not to get it. I did not however suggest that I didnt get it. The links are not subtle, they are just not strong. Tenuous at best. As i said, conceptually the ad is good but the execution lacked strong creative thinking. You seem to defend this ad a lot, did you have something to do with it?
@saintmattio It's a very difficult balancing act, however, it's much more rewarding for the viewer when they work it out. This engages the audience much more effectively.
@adamkirbylondon it took me a while to get it and I've worked in advertising, its not clear from the offset which is stupid when the majority of people don't even watch the adverts
Hmm I understand that it's like give into all these tempting situations, like the bubble wrap, garden sprinkler, dominos ect... But seriously what's the temptation with that shot of the person in a kilt/skirt or whatever? The temptation to pull it down, the temptation to look up it? I'm very confused about what message that's supposed to give.
@dgpictures5 Traditionally, Scottish men do not wear underwear when they wear kilts, so I think it is meant to be the temptation to have a look up to see his 'goods'
I just had that chocolate soufflé for dessert: TOTAL CHOCOLATE HEAVEN!!!! I was literally licking the bowl clean!!!!
