Prediction: If a comet/astroid/meteor big enough to wipe out the planet doesn't hit us in the next 50 years (by 2060), then it will NEVER imact Earth. Our technology will prevent it. Watch and see!
i see big comets at nite when i walk my dog in the woods. someting is going on in our skies. they arent planes or sumthin else. the space company or aliens are up there watchin us. i get scared sometimes so much about global warming all all he end of the world stuff. im glad i wont see the end,the earth is gonna pay for all our mistakes.
DRAMA, you know it could also just be sataliets you see? if I would stay up allnight I can esually count 20-30 satalits moving over me. and comets falling on earth-the ones you see- are of no problem at al
Right lay off the sauce and drugs man and the X-files. You certainly wouldn't be able to see comets with your naked eye not even Lulin, what you're seeing are meteor showers which in a dark enough spot are pretty normal. Watch it though apparently aliens like to land in woods and kidnap earthlings walking their dogs at night for a good anal probing.
i would love a deep anal probing by a extra terrestrial with an extra testicle. ohhhh my god..that would feel soooo good!! they wouold know how to hit the man's g spot better than anyone.
Jabjabs , I hope you are aware that the person you are texting to is not TheBadAstronomer. I thought it was funny that a person would try to impersonate Phil but I didn't think anyone would be so dim as to believe it to be true. That's even more funny. Thanx for the giggle!
Are you talking comets or asteroids? If it were me it would deflect the asteroids with the Nuc and the comet with something more gentle, maybe a set of at least 3 rockets placed to keep it in the right direction.
I noticed you didn't bother to refute any of my arguments. I guess that means you don't have any. Feel free to write back if you want another lesson. I'm a generous person and always willing to educate people in the areas where they lack knowledge. Oh, by the way, you're welcome.
Personal insults. Nice. When you don't have any evidence I guess you need to use whatever you can right? You seem to know all about having no evidence. Don't worry though, I will rise above it. That's what adults do. So let me get this straight. You think that a 1000 psi oxygen tank exploding inside of the CSM could have sent a 100K lb. space craft wildly off course? I suggest you read up on a guy called Newton.
Well my comment is right there for you to read. Clearly I wrote that a nuclear explosion next to a comet and a 1000 psi explosion inside a CSM are two different things. Maybe you just read my comment wrong. Go back and read it again. So you agree then that they are not the same? If so, why the original comment? Please clarify.
AngeAzrael, are you trying to say that detonating a hydrogen bomb next to a comet is the same thing as a 1000 psi oxygen tank exploding inside of the Apollo 13 Service Module? Because they're not the same thing. At all. Obviously. Mr. Plait's Ph.d is in no danger from logic such as this.
Actually, Michaelstmark, I know quite a bit more about it. It's a little silly to judge someone's knowledge on a subject by a two minute interview edited by someone else.
I accept that Phil; I guess the point I was making was that asteroid/comet deflection is obviously an imprecise science to say the least; to the point where some people might get the idea it's actually more flying-by-the -seat-of-pants and hoping for the best stuff - outside of trajectory optimization and requisite megaton yield estimation.
wow... what and incredibly rude comment. Have you ever actually listened to Mr. Plait, or have you ever read anything by him?? Basing your opinion about on 3 minute clip is the wrong way to go.
he is so bad at communicating his thoughts i was figuring he is still in Jr 'high'

Great video and a really good message for why we need to stop funding wars and start getting our space program in high gear.

That guy who's interviewing him has something to do with the super hadron collider I think, I've seen him before.

Super Hadron Collider. Wow, switch the D and the R and you have a helluva geek-porno title.

Calm down my friend. Your not helping him or your cause, so what are you doing?
h8uall66 has an "interesting" name, but he really is a good sort, so talk a deep breath, and try talking about something a little different.

Wow. I have a whole new respect for that movie. Not enough to watch it, but respect nonetheless. ;)

earthbound comet/asteroid = BAD
Send up rocket with BIG BOMB = GOOD
Explode Rocket near BAD comet and...
..fingerscrossed hope for the best.
That seems about the limit of Phil's/NASAs asteroid-busting "expertise".
Basically.
