  • Blue ray

  • 1982 version on blue Ryan

  • Got this one today for 24.99! My day has purpose.

  • Still got the VHS tape with the Green tape heads! Proud to own!

  • i gotta get one one of them!

  • the picture that is when E.T. leaves earth and goes back into space

  • awesome video man.

  • You have the COOLEST DVDs & BLU - RAYs

  • I was born in February of 1982 and my mother tell me that come summer and autumn and the following next year when ET dolls where all over the stores I was extremely fascinated by them, so I can safely say I have been an ET fan all my life.

My hubby know the way to my heart to, he to know to buy me a new DVD instead of flowers or a game, or a science fiction or occult book or perhaps an action figure. And he can cook. Unfortunately I can't. :P

  • Woah you said that this originally sold for over $100! O.O

I can't believe that I bought this for only $15 bucks on eBay AND it was in absolutely perfect condition! I must be the luckiest buyer. :)

  • this is great video cant you do a part 2

  • Wait... wasn't this gift set released simultaneously with the two-disc set?

  • ET is the best movie ever made. i'm thinking about buying this on amazon and all other ET merchandise...shirts, cups, posters, and novelization by william kotzwinkle and his sequel. i also downloaded the script on imsdb. it's a good script by melissa mathison. steven spielberg is a true film making genius.

  • Great video Zaranyserak, Just got the standard 3 disc set today but the gift set looks awesome.

  • It would be awesome if George Lucas could release a gift set of the original Star wars films with every version made to date in the best picture quality along with a bunch of other cool thing.

  • Ha ha I loved it! Great review! E.T. is my all-time favorite movie, just above Back to the Future. It's why I've loved movies all my life and why I now write screenplays

  • One of the coolest features on the 2002 edition (the "Walkie-Talkie edition") is the audio track featuring John Williams performing the score live at the Shrine Auditorium.

  • Hi, I am wondering about Silver DVD case inside. If you were to take it out and put it on the shelf with your collection would it be the same height as regular DVD cases, or is it awkwardly tall?

  • It's a little bit oversized, but it would fit alright with regular sized cases. A bit bigger, but not too much.

  • when is this classic gowing to be relased on blue ray with both cuts If it wasent for this movie I wouldint know what to due with my life

  • Good question! Well, we're finally starting to see a trickling of Spielberg movies (Minority Report just came out, and Close Encounters has been available in a SUPERB deluxe Blu-ray set for a while now), so hopefully it won't be too long a wait.

  • Great review. :)

  • So if you never went to see E.T. in 2002, and never actually watched the 2002 cut on the dvd, does that mean that you've never actually seen the 2002 version of E.T. ever? trust me it's not that bad when compared to the special edition of the star wars trilogy, which I also didn't mind that much.

  • Correct. But what I HAVE seen is the original 1982 version, when it was originally in theaters, on TV, on home video, etc. In my experience, the FBI agents have GUNS, not walkie talkies. The justification one way or the other doesn't really matter to me, the bottom line is the altered version isn't the E.T. I grew up with and remember. I'll watch it eventually just to have the experience, but the 1982 version will always be the definitive E.T. in my books.

  • Is ET the only movie that Spielberg "walkie talkied"?

  • To my knowledge, yes.

  • i got a dvd review for you zman babylon 5

    see you on stickcam

  • Actually the 2 discs edition that came out during the same time had the original theater cut and the special edition of the movie. I own that version. The gift set version has a lot more special features though. I think I could have picked up the gift set for around $50 when it was released.

  • I have my original e.t. on vhs. the first print.

  • I saw the "walkie talkie" edition in theatres when I was 9 and like the new footage that was added in. Even though the 82 version is better, I watch the 2002 version on DVD because it has slightly better picture quality on it, no beef against the 82 version

  • '82... I was -5 back then. lol

The first thing I got, well my father did, was the 2002 SE 2-Disc DVD.

It was of course also the first time I saw the CGI-enhanced version, which... even I for my generation don't like thát much.

I really hope the BD will have both, that's to be expected anyway...

I did get an official stuffed Anniversary-E.T. with a red hooded sweater with it though. :)

  • Actually, I don't know if you know.

But Spielberg actually had E.T.s face CGed at parts where he wasn't satisfied with it because of limitations during filming.

Which, even though 'Jurassic Park' looks amazing, looks too software-ish in 'E.T.' . -_-

I don't mind some alterations for improvement, but this CGI was so cartoony and so 2000's-software-like etc. I was put off by it.

Spielberg has gone computer-crazy, as he claims to be more into games than film now.

  • Oh, and if he'd have done 'Harry Potter', it would have been computer-animated apparently. Not cool... -_-

Well, maybe motion-captured, which is better if done right, but still... could you imagine, especially for the fans of the films. XD

  • Spielberg might have gone computer-crazy but not as much as Robert Zemeckis. Even if he stops directing live action movies he still will produce them.

  • Sure, but the difference is, the fans of Spielberg's films complain about how he messes up the films now.

The difference in Zemeckis is, he makes amazing CGed films.

He also doesn't make live-actions... well, sort of, as they're motion-captures, and then apply CG to the live-action, the actual live film, you know...

I'm also not really criticizing Spielberg, not as much as most bigger fans.

But I can agree that he, if he must apply CG to older films or even newer, he should do it right.

  • I picked this set up a few months ago, brand new, for $30. I had no idea at the time how rare it truly was, but after watching your video, I've come to realize how good of a deal that really was. Wow.

  • It's not rare, I picked it up at Wal-Mart a year ago for $10 and you can get it on eBay/Amazon for under $30.

That's not to say it isn't a bad ass set and well worth that price.

  • The other version is a 3 discs edition.

  • Hmmm...I did some checking, and the only Region 1 editions I could find were this one, the 2-disc edition I mentioned, and the current 1-disc edition. Maybe other Regions got a 3-disc version?

  • Great E.T Boxset, yeah the re-vamped version of E.T. was just Despicably unecessary, it really did nothing positive for the movie, even the bathtub scene wasnt needed, the 1982 version is and should be the only version of E.T.......Megga Review :)

  • There is one Region 2 edition, "E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial: Collector's Edition (3 Discs) (5.1/DTS)". :-)

  • ahhh My favourite things are DVDs and video games does that make me a geek. Actually it probably does

  • ET.PHONE KFC

  • hey sean just wondering if ur ever going to a god of war review or first impressions video about the 3rd one ever?

  • a woman that can cook and likes dvds....You're gonna want to hang on to her.

  • Being the E.T. fan that i am it seems like the Ultimate Gift Set is more wanted and more rare than the vinal record of Michael Jackson reading the story item(which i do have including the poster) and my dvd version has a different disc format while the 2002 version is Dual Layer, the 1982 version is single-layer other than that the widescreen presentation is the same as the 2002 version

  • I owned the ET Story read by Michael Jackson.

I sold it quite a few years ago.

  • Ah, yes! I was thinking I was one of the few people who actually remembered that one. I'm happy to say I also still have my set of that on vinyl. I see on amazon they're going for quite a lot these days...but I would never part with such an awesome collectible. :)

  • i can't believe they didn't include a CD version of the storybook read by MJ with this set. the reason that was given as to why the Vinyl box set was pulled off shelves in '83 was because Sony didn't want it to compete with the Thriller album - HA! like that would happen anyway.

  • Awesome video!!

The E.T. Gift Set looks great!! I will have to try to upgrade to this E.T. DVD edition.

I enjoyed the special features on the two disc set I have. They are really good in my opinion. There diffently worth watching once to see what you think. They should be the same special features.

  • Zaranyzerak, u have made ur love of Blade Runner crystal clear. I wuz wondering whar ur thoughts on Legend r?

  • What movies in 2008 did you like???

  • Do you have The Rocketeer? I talked about it on my video.

  • my friend has this set. he says its pretty good, but one of the featurettes is a truncated version of the 90's laserdisc documentary and they didn't even bother to put the deleted scenes from the documentary on this DVD set.

  • Awesome review ! I have been waiting for this one ! But after this it'd be great if you started doing some Blu-ray reviews, too.

  • Oh, I will. Just haven't been buying a lot of blu-ray yet since I've been focussing mainly on out of print TV shows and such on DVD that may never see the light of day on Blu.

  • Just to let envious viewers know, no poking around is nessicary. It's on Amazon, and if you don't mind it used (in Like New condition) you can pick it up for 10 bucks. Buy it!

  • Sean!!! Watch one great extra of the bonus disc! The premiere of the 20th anniversary, with John Williams scoring live with an orchestra!! Brought tears to my eyes. You gonna love it!

Great box! I don't own the original theatrical release, wich I much prefer. Gotta check it out the net for it, definitely.

  • Besides 1982, I also thought 1991, 1996 and 1999 were fucking fantastic years for movies.

  • 1993 had some great movies, including the first Jurassic Park. 1989 had the first Batman movie. 1985 had Back To The Future. And 1999 had The Matrix.

  • And I forgot. 1986 had Ferris Bueller. And 1988 had Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

  • 1986 was pretty good too - Transformers, Aliens, Howard the Duck, Platoon, Crocodile Dundee, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Star Trek IV, Top Gun, and The Fly to name a few...

  • 1982 had E.T., The Dark Crystal, The Thing, Blade Runner, TRON, Poltergeist, Star Trek II, First Blood, The Plague Dogs, Rocky III, the Sword and the Sorceror, The Last Unicorn, The Secret of NIMH, Creepshow, Fast Times at Ridgemont High...and that doesn't even touch on the gajillions of classic TV shows and cartoons that started that year too.

  • Wow, I never thought I'd see The Plague Dogs in there. And I agree, the best year for films I think. Blade Runner & The Plague Dogs.... Now if only I had been around at that time =/

  • That is one pretty set right there. I always wanted to get that, but a little pricey at the time...So I settled for the two disc edition, which is awesome.

Thanks for the look at the gift set..I may get that one anyway for the book..

  • I have the two disc DVD got it free with the original Back To The Future trilogy box set. One of my all time faves! Would love to have this set at some point! Great review as always buddy!

  • the 2 disc set came out the same time as the box set. I purchased it at it's release. what was changed was that the 2 disc set originally was only going to have the new cut and the extras. instead they changed it to both cuts while cutting down the documentary to about 20 minutes

  • THE THEATRICAL CUTS of E.T. and the original Star Wars trilogy have better be on Blu-Ray (in anamorphic widescreen if you catch that joke)! Anyways ZARANYZERAK what are other cases where you prefer the theatrical cut OVER the alternate cut?

  • I know he loves the theatrical cut of Blade Runner. So much so that he goes into a weird rage when he doesn't get his voiceover.

  • Alien would be another one. Don't listen to Geo. He likes teasing me about my Blade Runner obsession (where I prefer the Final Cut). :)

  • So have you figured out if hes human yet? ; )

  • I agree with you.

It's amazing on how George Lucas won't have the Original Versions restored in HD, with 5.1 sound.

Ridley Scott doesn't prefer the original version of Blade Runner but he still did a basic HD restoration for it.

  • I'm sure that Lucas will put Star Wars on blu-ray eventually. I mean, he'll have to. Look at his past history with the Star Wars VHS and dvd and how many version there were. There'll be a blu-ray at some point.

  • Hopefully he will include the original versions when the trilogy eventually comes out on Blu-Ray. Fully restored in HD.

I watched a bit of the original version of Star Wars on my HDTV, and unfortunately the picture quality was quite bad. They look good on a regular 4:3 TV.

  • ZARANY! SEAN! WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS! SPREAD THE WORD! THERE ARE THESE PEOPLE SELLING THE SET FOR $9.75-$65!!!! AND ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE IN VERY GOOD-LIKE NEW CONDITION! THIS IS CRAZY!!!!!

And now I would like to formally apologize for typing in all caps.

  • awsome dude great review ^_^

  • I'm pretty sure that the 2-Disc set of ET came out the same date that this Boxset came out.

  • I've been wanting to see what you think about this.

  • i wish i had that
