theres a horror movie im trying to find i saw a few years ago, all i remember is the begining starts with a flashback, where the father is taking his sons to the car to hide from the mom, when she comes out he shoots here with a shotgun, then in the presentthe lead role is a really smart guy, plays a lot of chess, and i remember one scene where he tells his shrink he spands most nights focusing on a spot on the ceiling and it ends up opening parts of his brain, and it opens a door for a monster

Most of these are Splatter. Some of the others are more properly Science Fiction. Some are not even Horror at all. Where are the 1925 Phantom of the Opera, the 1931 Dracula or Frankenstein? Where are The Wolfman, White Zombie, or the 1963 The Haunting? At least you included The Blair Witch Project and The Others. I agree with those.

@KatsumiXChris Not trying to be rude, just educational, cuz I'm glad someone's defending the sub genres but Suspense and Thriller are basically under the same category. Mystery is rarely horror unless mixed with another sub genre or intended to be so. Torture porn and torture are the same thing. Psychological horror isn't a sometimes. And there are many more. Wikipedia puts this best, for everyone arguing on here: What is considered to be a horror film has varied from decade to decade.

Jaws and Alien can count as horror or SciFi, depending on whether or not you consider them monster movies (another sub genre). The Sixth Sense is a supernatural thriller, which is also justified on a horror list. And LIKE HELL is Saw not a horror movie! Oh, but, love your user name...

Well I'm glad that there was a big number of the classic horror movies, like Halloween and Carrie, but I don't consider movies like Saw, The Hills Have Eyes (which I thought was stupid) and The Blair Witch Project to be TRUE horror films. Blair Witch project was LAME. Saw, just bloody and gory. Not scary. Hills have eyes, i think its more sci fi due to the 'mutant's or whatever

Why society considers these movies "scary" is because at the times they were released, they were thought to have shown thing that were seemingly innocent as deadly and evil, like young children. Psychologically it terrorfies people to think of children in that light.
