  • Mine split.

  • Even with a double layer of parchment it still went a bit brown on the outside of the cake. So next time I will surround the outside of the tin with brown paper also the base. (I have always done this with my Christmas cakes which I have been making for 40 years but thought Mary knows best!.) It also didn't take nearly as long to bake as suggested(only about 2.5 hours & not 4- 4.5 hours.

  • Made mine today using Mary's (Tesco's?) mix above - so quick and easy, I think it took me longer to line & butter the tin! Smells delicious - will decorate it this week sometime and hopefully it will taste as good as it looks/smells!!

  • Mary Berry, like the favourite Aunt you never had ;-) Great idea if you'll never use the left over ingredients if you bought all of the items separately, I'd still prefer to buy it all myself though! Do yourself a favour, and use a stand mixer, the best kitchen investment you'll ever make, cakes are vastly improved with proper mixing, and your hands are free to do other things, including the washing up ;-) Thanks Dame Mary
