Soviet Russia launched an unmanned space shuttle 25 years ago.
The Americans then wanted to buy the secret technology for the Space Shuttle autopilot. Russian refused to sell. Only after 24 years, in 2010 the U.S. launched the first unmanned shuttle.
In this video, the same Space Shuttle "Buran", which in automatic mode flew into space.
There was another BTS-002 to test the aerodynamic properties of the space shuttle, which is now in German Museum of Aviation. This the same thing that the American shuttle "Enterprise", which did not fly into space, and only tested on Earth.
Planned to make 6 shuttles, 2 have been completed, the remaining 4 space shuttle have completed only 40%.
It is a pity, that European Space Agency didn't continued this project. How many space shuttles can land with no pilot in it? Or be attached to a great plane?
Buran and Mriya could be a milestone in conquest of the universe, and by now space travels gave us much more benefit than CERN collider.

Buran transporter does not have any booster rockets and it gets all its propulsion from the attached Liquid fueled booster rockets(shuttle has three engines + two solid fuel rockets.. if something goes wrong after ignition there's no way to stop it
buran is a robot space craft -it can go up into space, do the job it's required to and come and land completely automatically

It is based on the space shuttle obviously, they copied the spaceraft and they made it better. but it's still based on that one. It is not an original design. only the components are sort of original engeneering. they didn't make a brand new design from scratch. they didn't bother. so there's a thing that works so let's make it much better in many ways. which is easier than make a brand new one.

@JFDhater yes it would add a little extra lift, but not much. Plus it wouldn't matter very much because airplanes and jets set their flaps down a little bit during take-off AND landing. Still not sure why for the take-off. The flaps slow down an airplane so they can safely land. And (like on most jets) the reverse-thrusters slow it down tremendousley.
Impressive but as u can see the Russians sure "borrowed" quite a bit of the Space Shuttle design even taking into acct the how all winged-style spacecraft would have sim designs. The US Shuttle has some sim to the SANGER vehicle that had some design work done during the early stages of WW 2 by the Germans.
@mphet26 There are always sim designs given the requirements of the ops and where the vehicle is operating in. However there was huge amt of data that the Russians has access to which otherwise suspect they might not have been able to build the vehicle. Sad though, the Russian Shuttle is no more; destroyed in a building it was housed--fire---They are workin on a vehicle known as "Space Clipper"(?) or something close to that name--not the US--we are throwin away or manned space cap.

I saw it too. It was on show for some time, but I think under-promoted. Not many people seemed to have thought it was interesting enough to visit - their loss! Something I didn't know: It had jets on it as well as rockets, so could take off horizontally from an airstrip.

Probably even made some difference in the outcome of the project, some very important technologies were developed later as the result of our team's work, who's achievement is it? Which nation? Completion of Buran was a political step. The goal could be to show the ability to symmetrically respond to any Star Wars program, making the US consider further space arms race to be useless.

It certainly is, I think NASA would have benefitted from still having some competition. This must have been a test flight, those manuevers were a little drastic for a normal fairy flight. Its a good thing I wasnt there filming out of the back of the cargo aircraft, I probably couldnt have resisted trying to spit on the windscreen of the Mriya just to see how good my aim was. :) Great vid!

Impressive but as u can see the Russians sure "borrowed" quite a bit of the Space Shuttle design even taking into acct the how all winged-style spacecraft would have sim designs. The US Shuttle has some sim to the SANGER vehicle that had some design work done during the early stages of WW 2 by the Germans.

@mphet26 There are always sim designs given the requirements of the ops and where the vehicle is operating in. However there was huge amt of data that the Russians has access to which otherwise suspect they might not have been able to build the vehicle. Sad though, the Russian Shuttle is no more; destroyed in a building it was housed--fire---They are workin on a vehicle known as "Space Clipper"(?) or something close to that name--not the US--we are throwin away or manned space cap.

I saw it too. It was on show for some time, but I think under-promoted. Not many people seemed to have thought it was interesting enough to visit - their loss! Something I didn't know: It had jets on it as well as rockets, so could take off horizontally from an airstrip.
I bought a T-shirt, which showed Buran landing at the Sydney Opera House - ha!

@TheKazap то-есть как это не наш? АН 225 принадлежит Antonov Airlines, приписан к аэропорту Гостомель под Киевом. Если ты работаешь на компанию, ты же просто зарабатываешь деньги для себя и семьи. In case you don't know Ukraine was either part of the Russian Empire or USSR for quite some time and the scientific and financial resources were shared it made no difference where things were invented. You could have a NII in Moscow with specialists from any part of USSR same as the Scientific base in Ukraine was due to governmental control coming from Either Imperial St Petersburg or Russia. Trying to separate Russia from Ukraine is the same as separating Kiev and Zhitomir.

@S4uryk I speak pretty good Russian, lived there for 3 years doing my PhD. Worked on a project with some specialists in St Petersburg Uni on Waves. Probably even made some difference in the outcome of the project, some very important technologies were developed later as the result of our team's work, who's achievement is it? Which nation? Its stupid to try and identify who's impact on what technology is vital, science doesn't work that way. But credit to the Russians for funding our work.

@fiveoscar space shuttle is based around several hundred various developments and yeah it was a good idea. Unmanned flight control is not US idea, Buran actually has it shuttle doesnt. UAV type craft is useless in any tactical situation with any enemy that has SAM even the stealth X45 is kinda pointless. Stealth technology was Ufimtzev's idea (a soviet scientist) Russia did not develop it as it is pretty pointless. EGrid would have been pointless without AC which was french idea. Any more?

It certainly is, I think NASA would have benefitted from still having some competition. This must have been a test flight, those manuevers were a little drastic for a normal fairy flight. Its a good thing I wasnt there filming out of the back of the cargo aircraft, I probably couldnt have resisted trying to spit on the windscreen of the Mriya just to see how good my aim was. :) Great vid!

@izchicago And let me remind you that Von Braun has been dead for quite some time now so that's a very poor excuse to explain why NASA has left russia in the dust. Russia is merely a museum now. Hahaha!

In the dust? Russia pioneered rocketry (look up Tsiolkovsky), put first object into orbit, put first animal into orbit, put first man into space.
Yes? And how do American astronauts get to international space station now that they decided to retire ALL of their shuttles and sell them to museums? Maybe in Russian Soyuz rockets? Maybe it is America's space program that is turning into a museum?

@TheBishopSSR And the US actually put a man on the moon! Did you not hear about that. All the stuff russia was doing to accomplish that ended up not paying off. Oh and russia still hasn't put a man on the moon. tisk tisk. since then NASA landed an object on an a asteroid and put robots on mars. The US has the best space program. That's how russia is left in the dust.

@fiveoscar Well, it is arguable which achievement is actually the biggest- actually getting to space for the first time, or landing somewhere. Also, it is not the end of Russian space program. It has just been DELAYED by collapse of USSR, not killed. In 1 year Russians are sending a monkey to Mars. Also collapse of USSR killed space progress in US as well. "object on an a asteroid and put robots on mars" - is a pretty short list of achievements since the end of space race, eh?

@TheBishopSSR That is one major delay, Boris. Short list??? Who else has done it? That's like saying climbing mount Everest and finding a cure for cancer is a short to do list. NASA has also sent countless satellites and developed new technologies like the space shuttle (the most complex machine made by man). Compare that to the list of russian accomplishments after
