  • legendary stupid friend's wife fucker general Grivas who is only a bullshit did nothing but killed many innocent Turkish Cypriots.

  • The enemy for him was not the upcoming Turks but junta

  • @Alexander29854 - The junta was not only Makarios' enemy but everybody's. The junta was the tool the dark forces in the Whitehouse which was to partition Cyprus.

Makarios prevented the partition of the island by reluctantly signing the Zurich Treaty in 1959. In the early 1970s the US was desperate for alternative home-porting for the 6th Fleet after they were kicked out of Smyrna. At the same time they also lost their airfields in Libya. The traitors of the junta gave them what they wanted.

  • Makarios 2 weeks befor the invasion of the Turks has been reduce the armed forces of Cyprus 50% !!!

    Why????

  • @Alexander29854 - His only interference with the armed forces in early June 1974 was that he refused to recognise the cadets who were chosen and trained by the representatives of the junta who were running the army on the island.

The most serious reduction was the removal of the force placed on the island by Papandreou, with great difficulty, anticipating a Turkish invasion. The removal was instigated by the Glücksburg on Johnsons request and was eventually concluded by the junta.

  • @lykauges - His decision regarding the brain-washed cadets was legitimate. He was the democratically elected President of a Republic. He did what every other President would have done in his place. When you are the elected leader of a Republic with a thriving economy you take a very dim view of little cartoon dictators wanting to distabilise your government in order to please their CIA sponsors.

  • @lykaugesIt’s very clear his priorities was to reduce the armed forces in order to secure his office and has been putted to risk the security of Cyprus can’t be more clear

  • @Alexander29854 - Apart from the force installed by George Papandreou and removed, by the CIA sponsored junta, in order to pave the way to the invasion there were no changes at all in the island's armed forces. At any rate, Makarios could not effect any changes in the ΕΛΔΥΚ or ΤΟΥΡΔΥΚ forces whose role and numbers were decided in Zurich (1959).

Naturally, M's priority and loyalty leaned towards his democratic government and those who elected it - not the servile CIA cronies of the junta.

  • @Alexander29854 - The particion of the island was planned as early as the 1940s when it became clear that Britain would not be able to sustain its empire at the end of WW2. Someone had to undertake their role to guard Western interests in the region. Israel was not invented yet. According to the Zurich Agreement, Britain can not pass their Cyprus bases to another power. The US was getting agitated. They therefore had to create a situation that would give them bases on the island.

  • @Alexander29854 - He demanded the removal of junta officers who were working towards undermining the democratically elected government of Cyprus. He was in an unenviable situation. Since the overthrow of democracy in Greece, the Greek army officers in Cyprus, who were there to defend the island in case of a Turkish invasion, created a situation that gave a legitimate excuse to the Turks to invade. Kissinger's plan was a success. The junta served its purpose and was soon abandoned.

  • @dinoaxd - It is fortunate that we all know people who fought for ΕΝΩΣΙΣ. The events that preceded the signing of the Zurich Agreement are extremely well documented - to the minutest detail: e.g. the pressure exerted on Makarios by Karamanlis, as well as Frederica Glücksburg who kept phoning the Cyprus Delegation till morning urging Makarios to sign because Greece had already did so.

Since Greece withdrew her support, and MacMillan was ready to go ahead with particion what could Makarios do?

  • /and finally, we can of course, ignore what the Greeks, EOKA and Makarios ( a holy man, amrite) did PRIOR to the Peace Operation of 1974, right?

Of course we can? Why because the fucking guilty party was the Greeks but you dont want no one to hear about that part do you?

Too late, I have posted links and others are doing the same. Feeling stupid now? No? Well the next kick in the teeth for you muppets will be when Turkey joins the EU, no doubt Greece will threaten to leave, no one will care.

  • Much Greek racist here I feel I have to educated you fucking morons:

  • Long live the inventors of elections and the wheel. THE GREEKS...... All the turks ever did was bend down for us.

  • Yeah, I read about THE GREEKS...homosexuals, encourage underage gay sex and then lost everything they had. But hey you like to bring up what the Greeks did a billion years ago so why not bring this part up too.

And since the the invention of the Wheel, the Greeks have done...........erm NOTHING.

The Turks never did any bending down to you guys, but you guys sure did some bending over, if you get my dift (unlikely though).

  • Anyway, Turkey has 37 percent of Cyprusand they are starving there. They are not recognised by anyone but Turkey. Not even the yanks can publicly do that because they are invaders of someone elses land and property. All fact. To go to holiday you need to fly to turkey first. What a load of waste of time. You have a part of cyprus but really have fuck all.

  • Makarios was wrong not to accept Englands and the states request that the yanks take over the english bases and were allowed to build airfields from which to monitor both the russian and muslim threat. He wanted independence simply to stay in charge. You cannot be positioned where cyprus is and be alone. You need the support of a major power, If Greece hed been allowed to take control of the island then it weas safer. No Makarios was a failed politian with little brains and common sense.

  • if it wasnt for the Americans backing you Turkish sons of whores we'd have seen if u ud be talking big

America was plannin the invasion of Cyprus frm the 50s(Acheson plan) for military purposes (Russia, Middle East so close to Cy)

  • thx mister Makarios,

we couldn't take Cyprus without you

    miss you

    :)

  • Η Κυπρος ειναι κοντα στο Ισραηλ για αυτο βαλανε τα τσιρακια τους μογγολους

  • "makarios had to fly away to u.k. becouse eoka leader would kill him"

NOT the EOKA but the CIA agents would have killed him. We have details of Ioannides' instructions to the murderer Nikos Sampson - "Nikolaki, I want the head of Mouskos..."!

EOKA-B were just a bunch of idiots convenient for the purpose. They did not know the reasons behind fighting to overthrow a democratically elected government on behalf of the military junta of Greece.

  • exactly

  • Because the invasion was orchestrated by Ioannides and his fellow traitors of the junta. They were acting on the interest of the US. A Turkisn Northern Cyprus meant US bases in the north. Wilson, the new British PM had announced cuts in defence. The Zurich agreement stated that if the British bases in Cyprus were ever to be abandoned, they couldn't be passed on to another power. A Turkish Cyprus secured the US interests in the area.

  • However, even if the junta were not responsible for the Cyprus betrayal, they were not in a position to defend even the Greek mainland - let alone Cyprus which is only 40 miles away from Turkey. This became obvious when the junta fell. It is typical of military regimes to be impotent in terms of defending the country against an external enemy. They are always more concerned with the "internal enemies" - it is easier, and impresses the naïve and politically immature.

  • But since he wasn't in Cyprus at the time of the Turkish invasion. He had to fly out of Cyprus when Ioannides and Kissinger staged the coup. The Turks invaded while the puppet government was still struggling to be recognised in by UN. He was still the legal and democratically elected President - the legal face of the Republic. No head of government wanted to meet any of the traitors of the coup.

  • According to the agreement of Zurich Britain ought to have stopped the invasion, but they did not. To do so it would have displeased the US. It ought to be remembered, though, that the new British labour government won by just one seat in the commons. It was one of the weakest governments ever. However, an agreement is an AGREEMENT. They could have still helped since then, but never did.

  • Most certainly a non-Indoeuropean one!

  • EllinikiKardia, Thank you for this informative clip. Keep up the fight.

  • You are welcome.

  • Makarios never leaned towards communism. Naturally someone wanted to see him leaning towards that direction. A "worthy reason" ought to be invented for what was to follow.

He had an unenviable role in the history of Cyprus.

With GB having two key military bases in the Middle East on the island, it was unreasonable for USA to have any concerns. Unless they didn't trust their natural allies.

  • Regarding capital punishment and Makarios:

Before the last execution he made an unscheduled journey abroad. As a result the execution papers were signed by Klerides -- if my sources are reliable. In any case whoever endorsed the execution during his trip abroad is beyond Eurydike's point. He could have stopped it. The mere fact that he found it necessary to tell Fallacci that he was always prepared to pardon those condemned to death reveals that he was capable of not telling the truth.

  • Makarios was so cool. Greetz from Serbia.

  • Brother greetings to you.

  • GREECE + SERBIA = LOVE

  • "Henry Kissinger is a liar".

We all agree I am sure!

However, as someone who is critical on your lack of objectivity elsewhere, I'll have to censure your statement, and say allow us to make up our own mind. I wouldn't have done so if I knew you write from a particular political position - which you never gave, regardless of your asking ours in another forum.

  • Fair comment. The viewer is free to evaluate Dr. Kissinger. I believe my characterization is warranted from the evidence I produced in the clip.

  • @EllinikiKardia papas ise?

  • "True, union with Greece, the main goal of the liberation struggle was not achieved."

Reason: Karamanlis, following Venizelos' policy on Cyprus was against Enosis. The "good relations" with Britain ought to be preserved

  • Ethnarch Makarios decided to opt for Independence, after British pressure on imposing a worse solution on Cyprus.

Evridiki, I like your Patriotic comments and thinking.

  • GreekHeart: E.O.K.A were prepared to go on. Also as he wasn't the most realistic person in the world,if there was even the slightest indication of support from Greece, the struggle would have gone on -- not realistic but that's how things were back then. Karamanlis' policy on Cyprus was the one adopted by Venizelos many years earlier. Good relations with Britain should be retained. And it shouldn't be forgotten that all these events ought to be examined within the context of Ι.Δ.Ε.Α.

  • For a "man of God" he did not think it necessary to abolish the capital punishment in Cyprus.

  • Oriana brings up this point during the interview, Evridiki. You may want to refer to his answer.

  • Ell/Kard-- whatever his reason; still people were hanged as in the time of the British. For some things we shouldn't be asking for the reason behind; e.g. rape; the only question one can ask is: did you, or you didn't. By asking why, it is as though such acts are justified under certain circumstances.

  • EllinikiKardia - I read it very quickly; he actually claims that he was always prepared to pardon those condemned to death. But there were three executions by hanging during his first term in office. This can be checked. Make up your own opinion.
