  • Why not a big mesh cover like on domestic fans???

  • Poor thing - they are going to have to figure something out and fast.

  • Could the Wind Turbines of Chile Harm Blue Whales?

    Time AARON NELSEN

Wind turbines are increasingly recognized as a lethal hazard for birds, but some scientists now think they're also harmful to marine life. From half a mile away, the whooshing turbines emit an acceptable noise level of around 50 decibels; but if some of the Ecopower turbines are placed as close as 10 meters from the shoreline, they say, levels for ocean life could approach if not exceed a more harmful 100 decibels.

  • WIND TURBINES DO NOT PROVIDE RENEWABLE ENERGY! Not one coal or gas plant the world over has been decommissioned because of WTs. Because wind blows intermittently, electric utilities must either keep their conventional plants running all the time so the lights don’t go dark, or continually ramp up and down (called “cycling”). But coal-fired and gas-fired generators are designed to run continuously, and if they don’t, fuel consumption and emissions generally increase. They don't reduce CO2.

  • According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, wind turbines in the U.S. kill 440,000 birds per year. Birds don't know to avoid wind turbines -- they don't perceive them as threats. There is no learning since almost all contact with turbines is fatal to birds. As the U.S. increases wind power by 12 fold by the year 2030 -- as is planned --- many, many more birds will die unless wind farms make adjustments.

  • Wind power is great, but if it is built safely.

•Wind farms should not be built on bird migration routes, or in areas where large numbers of birds Wind turbines should be tall (200 to 260 ft.) to avoid locating blades at a height where birds tend to fly.

•Turbines should not provide potential perches for birds.

•Where bird collisions are likely, turbines should be shut down when visibility is poor.

  • I totally support ABC's efforts to make wind power development safe for birds. This is technology we need but not if it adds yet another impact to bird populations.Thank you for the work that you do!!
