I first heard of Chris Hedges when I read a book of his for a lit class with an emphasis on genocide. He is truly authentic and has seen the worst of war and knows what he is talking about. I heard him speak for over 2 hours on C-span last night. He reads for 4 hours a day besides his other work. An amazing thinker. I agree, he is like a prophetic voice to our generation. I hope he does even more public speaking because so few are able to communicate with so much authenticity.

Before the union movement, workers worked excessively long hours in dangerous conditions for low wages with few if any benefits. It wasn't until the workers refused to work in those conditions that corporations were forced to start paying better wages, we got the 40 hour work week, and we began receiving benefits. Unions are the reason the middle class exists today. History teaches us a lot.

If a single person demands higher wages, the company will tell them they will work for the wage they pay or they will find someone else to do it. The only way people can have a say is if they join together. Companies know they can't fire everyone. You say "employees as a whole"? What does that mean if it does mean union? However, I think that his point about capitalism could have been more aptly made had he dropped the reference to Michael Jackson. I first heard of Chris Hedges when I read a book of his for a lit class with an emphasis on genocide. He is truly authentic and has seen the worst of war and knows what he is talking about. I heard him speak for over 2 hours on C-span last night. He reads for 4 hours a day besides his other work. An amazing thinker. I agree, he is like a prophetic voice to our generation. I hope he does even more public speaking because so few are able to communicate with so much authenticity.

Before the union movement, workers worked excessively long hours in dangerous conditions for low wages with few if any benefits. It wasn't until the workers refused to work in those conditions that corporations were forced to start paying better wages, we got the 40 hour work week, and we began receiving benefits. Unions are the reason the middle class exists today. History teaches us a lot.

Just as companies lower prices if consumers don't buy what they make because it's too expensive (b/c it costs them money) so they respond to employee demands if the market (employees as a whole) demand it so that they an continue their work. Here's the kicker - you are paying unions (the middle man) part of your salary to get that, when the same free market you hate would have given it to you - without having to pay!

If a single person demands higher wages, the company will tell them they will work for the wage they pay or they will find someone else to do it. The only way people can have a say is if they join together. Companies know they can't fire everyone. You say "employees as a whole"? What does that mean if it does mean union? Unions are employees joining together as a whole. It sounds like you're not sure what a union is.

But the presentation is as massively divisive as I've seen from the corporate media. There are very few shades of grey in his remarks. Everything's apocalyptic, cataclysmic drama of the highest degree. He does a disservice to his cause by acting nearly the ideal stereotype of how his enemies portray the movement. All he's done is replace dingy clothes with officewear.

@NiteSaiya Spot on, Bullseye! I agree with a lot of what Hedges says and I'm glad he speaks out, but his father was a minister and consequently, everything he says sounds like a sermon, unfortunately. I'll take Chomsky any day, he just lays the facts out preaching.

Overall, I think Hedges makes a lot of valid points, and I basically agree with everything he said. However, I think that his point about capitalism could have been more aptly made had he dropped the reference to Michael Jackson. It's really hard to feel sorry for a pedophile, and it's even more difficult to buy into the notion that he was a creation of his socio-economic environment. From my end, he's preaching to the converted, but even I am reluctant to take this ride with him.

@OculiUbique ...tl;dr I'm basically saying there has only ever been "something like socialism", so saying "its rarely worked" is like saying "we've never had working governments". There's too much idealism in these debates, and everyone thinks these are extreme opposites: communism, capitalism, socialism. They are all interrelated, all have to do with the state influencing wealth and creating conditions where wealth is moved around. But ever side has their "pure ideals", but ideals aren't real.

@OculiUbique ...so, Capitalism is the point at which communities of laborers, who would normally exist in communal conditions on public lands (the commons), are forced into cities and factories by acts of state (enclosure laws). Capitalism is a parasitic condition in which a minority is permitted to benefit from the work of the many, arbitrarily, as a consequence of the privilege of "ownership". Even if we give "the party" ownership, its still a minority who benefits disproportionately.

@OculiUbique in short, i would argue that all meaningful production, including the initial transfer of the commons to private ownership (the basic condition of the industrial revolution) occurs under conditions we would label "communist". Capitalism always occurs when control of public goods are given to a powerful minority, and sustained by a process of constantly feeding profit back into the hands of a minority of "owners", who contribute nothing to production save their "sovereign ownership".

@OculiUbique Propaganda distorted perceived differences during the CW, but state generation of private wealth was always present in both systems. Even democracy was present in both systems to different degrees. In the US, we have polyarchy in which democracy is limited by many mechanisms that filter popular will into the votes of individuals, backed by the wealthy who pay for elections. Similarly in USSR and CCP candidates are chosen by elites, and voted for in the most meaningful way by elites.

@OculiUbique Let's examine whether socialism has "rarely worked". The enclosure law transfered the commons to private ownership via an act of state. If you define socialism as nothing more than state intervention in the creation of private property, wealth, and the division of society into owners (management) and laborers who own nothing more than "their labor", then even the so-called "capitalist" state has never been more than socialism. Private wealth never existed without state intervention.

So if communism and capitalism are Utopian ideals that have never been fully realized, what have we been living in, in reality? That's a very very important question to try to answer at this point in history. When you listen to hedges, ask yourself this.

@OculiUbique No, my ideas are different, not ignorant. I've read Baudrillard. Not all marxists agree, obviously. Nor am I a Marxist. Communism is already here. The question is how to further democratize it. Capitalism, in turn, is just one possible way of managing communism. It has become increasingly clear that it's a rather disastrous one. Clearly we need to be thinking about a better alternative, preferably one that does not systematically set us all at each others' throats.

@OculiUbique Communism just means any situation where people act according to the principle: from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs. This is the way everyone acts if they are working together. If two people are fixing a pipe and one says "hand me the wrench," the other doesn't say "and what do I get for it?" Entire cities and countries revert to communism after natural disasters as markets and hierarchies are luxuries they can't afford. Capitalism manages this.

@OculiUbique No, communism as a form of government was never achieved. Marx wrote that communism would be the stage a society reached when the state was no longer necessary and had disappeared. Every country we called "communist" only ever called themselves "socialist". Socialism is generally a form of state-planned economy. The term most often used for all major forms of government, from the USSR to the USA was "state capitalist".

Capitalism has always been based on principles of socialism and communism, and its most extreme free-market advocates like Friedman and Rand advocate anarcho-capitalism. But, somehow, everyone falls victim to this gullibility that Capitalism is "the opposite" of communism, that all these different ideas are pure, and mutually opposed. Any system that is based upon the notion that mass accumulation of wealth is somehow a good thing is a system liable and open for exploitation. You cannot promote wealth and then complain when most people begin cheating their way to it. Wealth is wealth, it knows no boundaries and is not limited by morality.
